I personally wasn't that impressed by "Never Said" at first but it grew on me some. I'm pretty sure the video snipet they showed was "Sratford-On-Guy", which they played on another show and which I liked a lot better, enough that I'm interested. I haven't re-watched what I taped but my quick impression was that the interview and live performace were pretty good. It was a new song for me. More later I hope. The production and music was rough and muddy, and Germano occasionally put her violin through contortions that could provoke a call to the SPCV (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Violins). :) Lisa's singing voice doesn't rise about this, low in both pitch and volume. This made it hard for me to catch her lyrics. What I caught indicated that her subject was actually happiness, though more precisely, its lack, why it is lacking, and the difficulties in holding it, especially self-destructive relationships which in some way or other touch about half of the songs. Unfortunately, she does little more than brush the surface of this admittedly complex subject, a disappointment. Rating: **ooo Most unusual word in a song award: sycophant (extra points for using it as a song title :) ) I should note that this album will be released on a different label (Geffen?) in a different form, so this judgement could change. In any case, your mileage can (and should :) ) vary. Wondering if Nancy Sinatra's original version of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" has cursed the song so badly that no one will ever do it well, I remain ... It has a lot of quality, but it's hamstrung by one thing or another. Musically, the album doesn't rise much above a ever tasteful subdued accompaniment to Mae Moore. A few melodies and hooks occasionally rise above the background. Thus center stage goes to Mae Moore's voice, a voice which could hold it, if she wanted. Instead it usually tends to float along with the music. If done right, this can work, and she does pull it off on several excellent songs. However, to my ear, this album too often fades into an undistinguished background. Lyrically, her main theme is learning to assert one's own needs and follow one's own desires, i.e., "Bohemia". She has some interesting things to say about this, especially in the context of recovering from personal crises and problems. While I agree, given that proviso, there is such a slippery slope so close that this message always rankles me. Our society already has far too many people asserting their own needs and rights without the necessary balance of considering others' needs and their own responsibilities. [End of editorial :) ] This cognitive dissonance hindered my enjoyment. Rating: ***oo Most unusual word in a song award: She has quite a few candidates, but I will go for "whippoorwill". The songs are included as originally recorded and in the context of the interview. The tape also includes two songs by Kevin Bartlett with Happy singing ethereal backing vocals, and the five Bartlett/Rhodes demos. Philadelphia PA 21 March 1992 (C-100) Live recording by Greg Bossert of the Happy Rhodes concert at the Harrison Auditorium. Happy Gift Project 1993, Vol I (C-90) Happy Gift Project 1993, Vol II (C-90) These are songs selected by Ectophiles as a holiday gift for Happy. Jane Siberry miscellaneous I (C-100) Jane Siberry miscellaneous II (C-100) A collection of various items more or less centered on Jane Siberry, compiled by Vickie Mapes. Palace of the Living Arts Philadelphia PA 5 Mar 1994 Jane Siberry CBC Spotlight 6 Apr 1990 This high quality live recording Siberry's not-a-concert concert was submitted by woj, covering 1-1/2 cassettes. The last side includes a CBC Spotlight on Jane including an interview and some live recordings. If you want the actual contents of any or all of these tapes, please e-mail me. Besides, each ordered tapes comes complete with a full cassette label and a separate printed content list. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.35 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum Street C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Can I add a tape to the tape dubbing project? If you have a tape or three that you would like to add, just ask yourself the simple question, "Would other Ectophiles like to hear this?" If you are uncertain, trying asking Ecto itself. In either case, if the answer is "Yes", I would be happy to add it. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! She helped remind us of all the good things about being 22 years old (as I grow older, I sometimes get very cynical about youth so it was good to remember all the great things about those in-the-distant-past times). I talked a bit with Melissa's...hmmmm, manager I suppose I should call her, and got the feeling that although Melissa likes being on a major label, she sometimes finds it to be a bit restrictive. But now I need to go find _Massive Blur_ and give a big thanks to Jeffy for introducing me to Melissa's music! Anybody got any details about this?? I remember a previous post asking about this, or referring to the CD single "Possession" that has both versions. Why is it uncredited on the CD? mp ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Mon, 11 Apr 1994 06:49:34 Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... i*i*i*i*i*i *************** ***HAPPY******* ********BIRTHDAY*** ******************* **** Michael Bowman *** *********************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Michael Bowman Wed April 11 1962 Aries Stuart Myerburg Mon April 14 1969 Aries T-Bone Wed April 15 1992 happy cat Jeff Hanson Sat April 16 1966 Aries Harry Foster Sat April 21 1956 NiceGuy Angelos Kyrlidis Fri April 22 1966 Taurus Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Pablo Iglesias Thu April 23 1964 Positive Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign?
