Ok fellow Ecto folks. I am about to make a startling offer. Many of you wont believe I am even offering this. Fact is folks, I am in dire financial straits. Prepare for the bidding frenzy that will follow my next announcement. Due to increased tuition costs, I need to start selling my _beloved_ treasures to ensure that I continue to receive an education. Yes folks, my TREASURES. I know this is sacrilege, and it wrenches my heart!!! But I figured, if I am going to offer my treasures to anyone in the whole world, I would offer them first to Ectofriends. I am not even offering this to Gaffa yet!! Ok..here goes. For all of yu folks who WANT that Kate Boxed Set for the B-Sides, but cant justify the cost, now is your chance. When I was in England visiting Stephen Thomas, I miraculously stumbled across the B Side Cd's sold separately from the boxed set. Some FOOL broke up their set. Soo, i seized my good fortune and RAN!! Now unfortunately, they are destined to leave my possession.*sigh* I am now offering these two cd's featuring the much vaunted b sides to Ecto. They are up for bids. I will accept bids for two weeks, and then make the decision as to the highest bid. COnsider this a silent auction. In a few days time I will post the so far highest bid. If no one on Ecto is interested, I will them make the same offer to Gaffa. This is just the first in a small series of offers. I couldnt wait for the classified ads to come out (sorry Doug). Please send all bids etc to my personal address, CDALLAS3@UA1VM.UA.EDU, so as not to clog up Ecto. Thanks guys.. i want a good home for my treasures since I can no longer provide one. (He *DID* ask her to sing with him - right?) He had an American woman singing with him, Eliza Somebody (I didn't even keep the program notes.) She was good about 20% of the time; often her voice is too weak and thin. She did get *one* chance to play and sing her own work, right after the intermission. Otherwise it's simply producing vocal sounds for Andreas' earlier stuff, or singing his new songs (which are much less "polished" as his instrumental stuff.) If it were Happy, she would have done a 100 times better at the vocals. But then she'd only get to sing one of her own songs. Plus all the time spent touring (sounded as if the schedule is long and tight) would have kept her from the studio, which is where we want her to be! -- Tippi Chai, Toronto, ON, Canada aj796@freenet.carleton.ca "It's really happenin' to ya!" I thought it might just be a catalog, but it was in fact the new CD _Anima Mundi_. I've only listened to it once, but my first impression is that it is _A Darker Passion_ Part II. Of course, that's not a bad thing since I love everything about _ADP_. _Anima Mundi_ continues with the mix of traditional Latvian songs and Karklins originals. It also includes a full version of "Hiro" which we only heard part of on _ADP_. Over all, I like it. She's not really doing anything new, but the traditional songs are still as beautiful as ever and her originals are always fascinating and slightly Laurie Anderson-esque. Check her out if you haven't heard her before. You won't be disappointed with either album. They are one of my favorite groups now. I found them soon after their new (and only one as far as I know) release by accident. This guy working at Cymbaline Records told me about them, knowing I was a Loreena McKennitt, Clannad, and Enya fan. I fell all over myself when I heard them for the first time and continue to. I think they have changed my cellular makeup. There is not one song on the CD I don't love. Talk about synchronicity! Columbia House (of which I am a member) just sent me a free 2-song sampler of October Project as an incentive to fill out their survey. They are selling it now and they included a little card with information about the group. They have never done this before, that I know of, for any group. What a mind blower!!! Here's the exact description Columbia House sent with the free sample: New York City's OCTOBER PROJECT is a one-of-a kind quintet offering a richly textured marriage of voice and sound. Multi-part harmonies over warm, delicate arrangements highlight unforgettable, haunting melodies. Over the past year and a half, the band has become a true Greenwich Village sensation, playing to standing room-only crowds week after week, and establishing themselves as an inspired alternative to the usual downtown scene. "The Crow" was considerably delayed after Brandon Lee's death; while there was talk of abandoning the film altogether, the reality was that it was days away from completion and could easily be completed with minor changes and a double for Lee. The film has been completed and is set for release on May 13th in the US, later for other countries. The film, by the way, was directed by Alex Proyas, an Australian director who started, like Russell Mulcahy, with music videos, before taking on his first feature film, the wonderful, little-seen, very strange and moving and highly visual "Spirits Of The Air, Gremlins Of The Clouds". That film featured a very Ecto-ish instrumental soundtrack with one wonderful track, "Spirit's Song" featuring vocals by Karina Hayes. That track is also on the nearly-done Australian sampler I'm assembling. Anyway, Proyas made some of those strange MTV promos before being offered his first US directing job, which was of course "The Crow". It's a shame that what was to be the "big break" for this talented director has turned out to have been dogged by controversy, incident, and ultimately tragedy. > The soundtrack is absolutely amazing . . . even some of the tracks by > artists I usually don't like are good (!!!) I get the feeling Proyas gets very involved in the sound and musical aspects of his films; being a former music clip director this isn't surprising, I suppose. > p.s. --- Can someone also let me know if Jane Siberry has released a > song called "It Can't Rain All the Time" before? A few days ago, I stopped in at a local music store that has a diverse selection of used promo CD singles. I've just begun combing the place for goodies, and find that it is a great way to try out new artists. (All promos are only $1 apiece.) When the first mention of Milla's new album came, I was curious. I had watched most of the incredibly lame Return to Blue Lagoon, and had also seen her in the enjoyable Dazed and Confused. My thoughts on her in the latter: she didn't have much of a part at all, which was probably, for the most part, for the better. But I decided to see what she was like, musically. I was fortunate enough to find, at the aforementioned music store, a promo for her album. This promo has five songs, all of them, I believe, on the album: Gentleman Who Fell, It's Your Life, Bang Your Head, Clock, In a Glade. I must say, I'm in impressed. I think the songs are put together well, they have interesting instruments, the lyrics are not bad. She also has a nice voice. I mean, she is no Happy, but I think I probably soon buy the whole CD. One more note: I expecially like the traditional song, In a Glade, and her performance thereof. Next, I would like to talk about Ingrid Karklins. I must say that, I am disappointed. ...In myself! I can't believe that I can be so blind as to miss music like this that is so close to home. (At least, close to the home I have for the next 6 weeks more.) Thanks Woj; as I told Ingrid, it's pitiful that I have to have someone so far away to point out such music effectively in my own backyard. Anyway, Friday I attended her instore at Waterloo Records at the recommendation of Woj. It was very brief--about half an hour--but delectable. She played a couple songs off her first CD--one that she called "the Wolf Song", because the real title is difficult for others to pronounce, comes to mind--and some from the new album. I remember Never Shake My Soul, Race the Sky, She Says, and Eyes I (on which one of the percussion instruments was "Thor's truck mirror"). The basic band was there, plus "golden voice" Malford Milligan (who looks like Gary Busey on steroids). It was interesting to me to note that I had seen the drummer, Chris Searles, around before. He played drums on the first tape of my favorite local (we'll see how Ingrid stands in the longer run), Michele Solberg. He has to be the best drummer in town. He can play any percussion instrument, it seems, and always does in the course of each song. He changes instruments as fast as Madonna changes lovers. Later that night, I saw her again at an outdoor concert in a nice little place called Laguna Gloria Museum. (I'd driven past the place before, but never went to explore it.) There seemed to be a good showing of people, and she admitted that she didn't think there'd be so many. Someone asked her if she was nervous; she said she was excited. And she really seemed to get into her music. I didn't keep track, but she seemed to play just about everything she knew, and even played a cover tune (Richard Thompson?). I especially liked Crack the Slab, from A Darker Passion. It was perhaps the most Happyish, in that great, disturbing way. Overall, (here I go in my The Player mode) I would say that Ingrid is a cross between a slighty bouncier Happy with a completely differnt voice, and a Latvian...um...person. Other songs I must say I enjoyed: the previously mentioned "Wolf Song", the more admittedly folky Andros, She Says, and others that I still don't know the names of yet. I also thought that Ligo was fun; when it's really started, it reminds me of the music played in one of the Stars Wars movies. I think, specifically, its the music that entertains Jabba the Hut in ROTJ. Woj: I talked briefly with her during the break between one-hour sets. I said hi, and then said that I should say hi for the person who told me about her. I started into your name, but not being particularly great at name pronunciation, began to stumble on your last name. Before I could move on and explain why the name might be familiar, she said "in Connecticut". She said to say hi to "Rob". "Hi!" I mentioned where I knew you from, and she expressed familiarity with the mailing list, and said she knew that she had been mentioned before. I didn't mention the tape, and neither did she, but perhaps after hearing your name she will remember. One more thing: she played a song called Dreams at the concert. She said it would be on her next album, which she was already working on. Definitely weird music; definitely my type of music. And the combination with folk.... Well, this is probably my longest post to date. I better end it now so that I will be able to break this record later. Oh! One one more thing. On one of the songs, she got off to sort of a clumsy start, then started over again. But, before she did, she mentioned that it was being recorded, saying something about a "live version of this song". No, I can't seem to remember which song it was. John H. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Michael Bowman!! *GUH* too V ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 11 Apr 94 0:30:14 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: 120M tip for West coasters It's in the first half-hour of 120 Minutes, and Liz Phair is there talking with Lewis Largent. In the first portion of the show a Madder Rose video is shown...then commercial, then 120M comes back with a clip from some Phair video...Largent talks about something else, then introduces Phair. They talk, then the video to "Never Said" is shown. Ah, the video just got over and there's a Meat Puppets video on. I'm taping, even though I haven't been interested in Liz Phair up to now. Maybe this will change my mind. At the beginning of the show, Largent says that Phair will be performing live, so I'm sure she'll be on more. (Don't know if this will do anyone any good...Alex maybe :-)) Vickie ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
