I highly recommend getting some of the Femme Music Samplers than Vicki made up from Doug Burks' Tape Dubbing Project. That will give you a sampling of a large number of female artists, which would be a great start to a buying guide!! Interesting. Well, I *love* _Touch_, and it is hands-down my favorite Sarah CD. I bought _Solace_ first and was totally unimpressed. I almost sold it, but I kept it because "Into the Fire" is such a great song. Then, I got _Touch_, and I saw the light. I finally understood why everyone was making such a big deal out of Sarah. What a great album! When I got _FtE_, I didn't like it nearly as much as _Touch_, but definitely thought it was better than _Solace_. I still think _Touch_ is the best of all 3 of them, but I really like _FtE_ too. I still find that I can't get into _Solace_. After about the first 4 songs (all of which I like), the rest of the album just blends together and I forget which song is which. The only one I clearly remember is "Black," and that's just because the *live* versions (which are very different from the original one) are incredible. Then, when I got onto the internet and started reading rec.music.gaffa there was so much praise for Solace I thought I'd check it out. At first I didn't like it to much, though a couple of tracks really stood out. As Stuart said--the second side tends to blend together-- and get too dark. But the more I listened to it, the more I came to love it. I especially love Path of Thorns and Back Door Man. And I can now listen to the whole thing and love every minute of it--though I still have trouble remembering the names of most of the songs. I was just telling Neal the other day how there's something insidious about Sarah's music. At first its kind of like you can take it or leave it-- her voice seems kind of weak and flat. But the more you listen to it, the more you begin to appreciate the subtle little nuances and expressiveness she puts in to her music--until suddenly you find you really like it and can't believe you ever considered her voice lacking in expression. As for Fumbling Towards Ecstasy--its growing on me. I think it is definitely her most solid, consistent album--but none of the songs have the emotional attachment (yet) that I feel for some of the songs on Solace. My ranking 1. Solace, 2. FtE, 3. Touch. So there you have it. When I first got FtE, I thought it was nice enough, but was not blown away by it. At that point, _Solace_ was my favorite of Sarah's works. Now that I've lived with _FtE_ for several months, it has grown on me incredibly! I don't think I could chose a favorite between the two of them. _Touch_ is definitely the lesser of the three for me. > Re: Tori live > >I do think "Precious Things" loses 100% of its intensity when delivered piano- > >only I've been keeping kind of quiet about this. When I saw Tori's show for _Little earthquakes_, is was blown away by its quiet honesty and intensity. I love _Under the pink_, it is an amazing work, and I was incredibly excited by the prospect of seeing her new show. Well, I have to admit that while very good, I was disappointed in Tori. Technically, she was brilliant. Her piano playing and singing were right on the mark. But I, too, felt a little bit of the 'look at me, I'm a big rock star' feel to the show. I'm not all that bothered by the slow tempos that people have been complaining about. They add to the poignance of many of the songs. It was the smoke, the lights and the forced feeling of her limited between-song banter (as opposed to the conversational tone of her last show) that put me off a bit. I also feel its time for Tori to get a band. Unlike some others, I felt that _God_ and _Cornflake girl_, with their backing tapes, were a little flat compared to the rest of the songs. With a band, they would really come alive. As to the _Precious things_ comment from Meredith above (finally, I get to the point I wanted to make) I have to disagree. I think _Precious things_ is incredibly powerful in whatever form its performed. Okay, enough. I think I've rambled a bit. I can try to further explain Boiled in Lead.... Um, they're from the Minneapolis area, and have been around for quite a few years now. Personnel has changed quite a bit over the years, tho. As has the bands style. It used to be a band that played primarily celtic traditional rock, but now they've expanded to many varieties of worldbeat and traditional music and rock and blues and a tinge of country and.... gosh wow, they're nifty! Well, they're a band that is as comfortable playing an all acoustic set for broadcast on public radio... as they are playing rock at bars across the globe.... They currently have three albums available on cd and tape.... Old Lead - a compilation of their first two albums From the Ladle to the Grave - a fine album Orb - their latest release with still more worldbeat stuff on it... I'm anxious to hear Antler Dance as Adam Stemple will undoubtedly be on it... he took over vocal and lead guitar duties from Todd Menton.... They're both wonderful, but it's a definite change in styles.... will be interesting to see where the new album goes.... Ach well, I've just returned from Minicon, the big Minnesota Science Fiction convention, where I saw Todd Menton perform with Stuart Martz and saw Adam Stemple play at a music party and with Cats Laughing and also with the Flash Girls..... Alas, Robin and Drew weren't at con this year, but I'm in a Boiled in Lead mood nontheless..... Glad he did! :) Simon Jeffes is the big cheese of PCO, and plays more instruments than you can shake a stick at, including Harmonium, Milkbottles, Ukelele, Penny Whistles, Guitar and Metal Plates :) Helen Liebmann plays a mean cello, Steve Nye on Piano, Geoff Richardson on BunchaStuff, Gavyn Wright on Violin, Neil Rennie also on Ukelele, Marcus Beale on Electric Violin, and various other people playing various other things, depending on Simon Jeffes' mood and inclanations. (What, you think? "Telephone and Rubber Band" ---yes! "Music For A Found Harmonium" he's not kidding!) All their songs are instumentals (with an occasional "ah ha" & humming thrown in) but it's not "New Age" and it's not "Classical" and it's not "Jazz" and it's not really anything else. It's Penguin music! :) It's worth listening to many times, because each time reveals some other little hidden something-or-other going on in there. It's serious music with liberal doses of whimsy and surrealism throughout. (Did I actually just try and describe Penguin Cafe Orchestra? Yikes!)
