Naoko Yamano, the lead singer and guitarist of the all-woman trio, told Reuters in a recent telephone interview from her home in Osaka that American bands such as the Ramones, Metallica, the Supremes and the Ronnettes influenced Shonen Knife. The band, which just released its new CD, ``Rock Animals,'' in the United States on Virgin records, is getting ready for an April tour of America and Canada. The trio, which also includes bassist Michie Nakatani and drummer Atsuko Yamano -- Naoko's sister -- last toured here in December 1993 with the Breeders and Nirvana. Shonen Knife takes its name from a popular brand of Japanese pocket knife. The band formerly sported colorful space-aged mini-dresses. Now it reflects the resurgence of the American '70s style with miniskirts, vests and go-go boots. Commenting on the recent near fatal overdose in Italy of Nirvana's lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, who frequently travels with his wife, Courtney Love, of the punk rock band Hole and their baby Frances Bean, Nakatani said: ``He is a gentleman. He was a nice father, a nice daddy ... holding the baby and taking care of her ... Usually, good people know the pain of others.'' One of the few Japanese bands to shoot for rock'n'roll success in the United States, Shonen Knife has just finished a video of the song ``Tomato Head'' in which the band members portray inspectors at a tomato juice plant. ``On tour, I don't drink,'' Naoko Yamano said adding, ``When Shonen Knife toured most every night we had parties. I usually drink tomato juice because I was worried about my health condition.'' Nakatani added, ``We are not party animals but we like to have fun.'' Naoko Yamano said she had written the lyrics after envisioning a ``man with a tomato head. The head is a tomato and, the body, he's wearing a nice suit. I thought it's a heavy metal feeling.'' ``Brown Mushrooms,'' a cut from their new record, was composed after dinner at an Italian restaurant in Manhattan. ``At the restaurant they served very big huge brown mushrooms. I thought mushrooms have other meanings. The atomic bomb cloud looks like a mushroom so I wanted to write about mushrooms,'' Naoko Yamano said. The distinctly heavy metal song ``Cobra Versus Mongoose'' describes a live attraction at a market in Osaka where a cobra is matched against a mongoose, and announces: ``Big fight, we can't wait forever.'' Naoko Yamano said, ``People shouldn't use animals as an attraction.'' Nakatani, who is also a songwriter, said the song ''Butterfly Boy'' featuring Thurston Moore from the New York band Sonic Youth on rhythm guitar, is about reincarnation but has several meanings. Over a decade ago, the self-taught musicians had formed the band because ``we don't like studying. We were bored for daily life so we decided to start a band.'' Nakatani added, ``Music is a universal thing.'' ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 06 Apr 94 11:02:15 EST From: Ilka Heber Subject: Rachel Morrison! Hello Everybody, we used the holidays over Easter to make a trip to Munich. As I already mentioned before, we learnt from Rachel and Tom Morrison in Frankfurt a couple of weeks ago that they would play in Munich on April 2. We went to the hall and checked with the guy at the door that they would really be playing, as they were not mentioned on the posters. The guy didn't know either and went inside to find out. We were very early, anyway, as the place only opened at 20:30 and we arrived at 20:00. We were allowed to go inside, anyway. We just walked through the door and saw Tom coming towards us. He seemed to be very pleased to see us and he thanked us for coming, which was really nice. We had a short chat and then sat down. As we were pretty hungry and the bands wouldn't start playing until 21:30 (!) we decided to go and find some food. When we came back, the first band started to play. They were pretty bad!! After them there was even another band (a bit better...) and then, about 23:40, Rachel and Tom finally came onto the stage. They were announced as 'surprise guest' all the way from London, which I found rather funny, as they live just north of Frankfurt! = ) Anyway, I wasn't sure whether the audience would actually appreciate their music, but they did. It was fantastic! Unfortunately they could only play for half an hour. They were allowed to do one encore, but although the audience kept on shouting for more the local promoter announced that there's one more band to come and that was it. We didn't stay around much longer, but it was certainly worth coming to see the gig. I did give Tom the tape I compiled for them, but of course, I didn't get any reaction on it yet. I'll let you know if I do. I wanted to offer something to you: why don't the more daring ones of you come forward and I'll get them the CD "Live at Phoenix"? It really is a great CD. It is about 38 minutes long and has about 9 titles on it (I'm not 100 % sure). The price of the CD is 25 DM (and this *IS* the price - I do not want to make any money on this!!!) and the postage by air mail would be another 10 DM (altogether a little over 20 $). If you are interested, just send me private e-mail. The music really is good. Maybe those of you, who already know Rachel's music, could write a few lines about her, too? (Uli, Tim, Richard,...) I will write a little more about their background in a few days. Tom sent me some press information, which looked quite interesting, but I haven't got around yet to reading it all. I know by now, though, that the new album will come out sometime in Autumn. I'm certainly looking forward to it!!! I hope I'll hear from you!! Bye, Ilka = ) ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 6 Apr 1994 03:20:59 -0700 From: "Alex Gibbs" Subject: Re: Various Vickie: > Mitch: > A mishmash guaranteed to drive the backlogged subscriber nuts :-) Well, I skimmed both posts for interesting bits, as usual. ;) Very low on time lately as my mom broke her leg on Sunday and my car is now 25 miles away from me. As they used to say in the better classes, if you're unclear about something, chances are you're not the only one, so ask about it. (At least I think they used to say that... I was probably home reading the textbook instead, or sleeping. ;) > I don't know that either, but I'm sure that H&K&Suzanne are always more > than pleased when a radio station expresses interest in Happy's music. So here's a question then: If you get someone at a station interested in Happy (even if it's just a DJ) is it better to give them info about AG or pass the station info on to Robert Lovejoy? I guess the real question is does AG prefer to be notified of the interest and given a station contact? If so it would seem best just to tell the DJ or whoever that that's what I'm doing and not have them order something that may be being sent to them anyway. Isn't it great to watch someone you know become famous? :) CD's I got this week: Emily Bezar, _Grandmother's Tea Leaves_ This is *really* interesting, and definitely ecto-ish. William Orbit, _Strange Cargo III_ I'd been meaning to get an album by this guy for a while, ever since I saw the first one on the racks (it caught my eye because "Strange Cargo" is also the title of an album by David Van Tieghem, that wacky percussoid). So far it hasn't caught my imagination. And I really like techno. Dead Can Dance, eponymous Boy, they sure have come a long way, haven't they? :) I'm almost tempted to take this one back, but I'll give it a few more spins first to give it more of a chance. The printed text comes wrapped around a large, and probably not very good, picture of MF. Her dark hair is a bit on the tousled side, her expression is kind of blank. My first impression was somewhat of a younger James Dean. These things happen :-).
