I've met people who do that, and I think they're > all slime. When I worked at Seventh Heaven Records in Kansas City, and Rose in Chicago, promos were very often what kept my show going. Maybe half of my CD collection, three forths of my LP collection and 90 percent of my pre-recorded cassette collection came directly from promo giveaways or promos bought at used record stores. It's not to sneeze at either, because I have well over 500 CDs, at least 800 LPs and so many cassettes I've never even tried to count them (at least 500.) *These are ALL female voices/bands/musicians* (To anyone who might not know, when I talk about "my collection" I'm always referring to the "Suspended in Gaffa" collection. Things I play on my radio show, which features only female vocals. I don't mean to sound possessive and imply that they don't belong to Chris too, but if they're female, they just automatically go on "my" side of the shelf, in alphabetical order. Okay, okay, as anyone who's been to our place knows, many of them do end up scattered around the living room, especially bunching up around the closet where I record the show. Also, we of course have quite a few CDs & LPs by male artists/groups.) Not to sound morbid or anything, but if something did happen to me, I'd want my entire collection (minus the stuff that I know Chris would want to keep, like Kate, Tori, Sarah & Kirsty) to go to some orginization somewhere that would keep it all together. I wouldn't want it all to go to the local used record store. It's a *collection* after all. I don't know where though. Whoever gets it would have to be dedicated to it, you know? It sounds silly, but it's important to me. (No Mitch, it *won't* be going to the Chicago Public Library :-)) (To those worried about my depression, I just want to say that I hope I live a good long life. I'm not ready to give up my collection yet. Besides, whoever gets it will be inheriting a mess. One of these days I need to get serious about cataloging everything.) What in the *hell* was I talking about? Oh yeah, promos! Goddess bless 'em, because without them my collection wouldn't be near as impressive. Still, when it comes to Happy, yeah, I'd rather not see her in the used bins, and especially not if the promo came from a radio station. I've bought 2 Equipoises in used record stores. I don't know where they came from originally though, probably the distributor. One of them I gave to Tori and the other one is my playing copy, since the one I originally got from Happy has already decided that I don't want to hear Save Our Souls, Closer and Temporary & Eternal. Those songs skip like crazy, sounding as if they were mixed by DJ Mixmaster MC Mix-A-Lot Scratchmaster Drukman. I know of at least 4 more EQPs in used bins. Were, anyway. Charley bought one of them, and I've got dibs on the other 3. One of those will go to Peter Gabriel if he ever gets his butt over to the US and plays Chicago. (Not that anyone else isn't welcome to give him one first, if given the chance :-)) If Happy's going to end up in used record stores, it's nice at least if they eventually end up in good, appreciative homes. (Like Efi's. Good for you Angelos!) I'm sitting here eating blue cotton candy, bought from a vendor down the street. For some reason I feel like playing "Come Here" or one of Happy's other waltz/carnival songs. I love those songs *so* much! Chicago area Ectophiles: Ingrid will be at the Lounge Ax on Sunday, May 2. We should all go, really. She's not to be missed! To jog your memory, Meth posted this in February: ------------------------------------------------------------------- From: meth@aol.com Subject: Ingrid Karklins Date: Wed, 10 Feb 93 12:47:48 EST Hi! Saw Ingrid Karklins perform in Middletown last night. It was a lot of fun. She played at The Buttonwood Tree, a used bookstore/art gallery/coffeehouse that is funded by a local arts council, and run by the chairman of WPKN in Bridgeport. They have poetry readings, drama discussions, and yoga classes there, as well as performances of various types. The ambiance is like listening to a concert in somebody's living room- it's really quite neat. About 25 people were there, which was perfect for the setting. The entire performance was plagued by massive sound equipment problems- the first song blew the amp (which was basically an old stereo amp belonging to the owner, so it came as no real surprise), but luckily one of the guys in the audience, a Wesleyan Ethnomusicology grad. student, lived close enough to run home and grab his. He should've brought his speakers too- one never worked, and by the end the other was quite dead as well. But everyone, especially Ingrid, was able to laugh it off and have a wonderful time anyway- she said she always wanted to do Fuzzbox versions of her tunes. :) Her music is rather difficult to describe, and I know it's been attempted here before. The program said "Kate Bush meets 3 Mustaphas 3", but I tend to think it's more like Laurie Anderson falls down a manhole in Riga. She played her Roland keyboard for most of the performance, only picking up her violin once for a 30-second prelude to a new song. She played her lap harp a few times, but chose more to stick with the synthesizer and have some fun. She was accompanied by Backbone, which consists of John on bass and Thor on "creative percussion"- and I mean creative. He took bits of his little drum kit apart so he could play the snare like a bongo, blow into the little ventilation hole to change the pitch, or make *interesting* sounds by turning the cymbals on their stands until they squeaked. He also played a truck mirror solo on one piece- he was quite impressive. This is the first real "tour" she's ever done, but she's having so much fun that she wants to go out every 3 months or so, exploring a different part of the country each time. This tour lasts all week- she'll be in Boston tonight, and I strongly recommend that any area Ectophile find out where she's playing and go. She deserves all the recognition she can get! I talked to her quite a bit- she plans to go into the studio to record her second album in the fall. Her contact at Green Linnet was there (why do record company people have to be such arrogant bastards, no matter how small the label???), which was amusing to watch- every time she played a new song, she said to him, "This will be on the next album, right, Chris?" :> Unfortunately she's not playing New York anytime soon- sorry woj. :( Fortunately, I know the guy who set up the show (Cliff Furnald from WPKN, who is Way Cool), so I should be able to get information on upcoming tours and albums no problem. It's time to act now, while leisurely and considered action is still possible. You are no doubt wondering what I'm driving at _this_ time--only the latest of many :-). And the answer is that I'm driving at the latest in our semiannual series of audio _Festschriften_, the 1993 Happy Birthday Project. More to the point (at last!), there is a need--not to mention an opening--for a volunteer to take on the task of putting this year's HBP together. The final objective, of course, is to produce for Happy--and all the rest of us--a comp- ilation of contributed musical selections and prefatory spoken comments, essen- tially structured the same way as the original Happy [Yuletide] Gift Project. Ectophiles will send the coordinator two c-100 cassettes, one of which will have the individual's contributed musical selection--ideally prefaced by a spoken comment--recorded on it; accompanied by stamped, self-addressed mailers. The coordinator will assemble them onto a master tape, ideally with his or her own backannouncements of the selections contributed by people who didn't include their own intros; and then send the package on to our resident Repro Man :-), Doug Burks, for the creation of final copies for Happy, and for the contributors. The qualifications for the job consist of time, patience, the organizational skills needed to keep track of tapes sent in by ectophiles around the world, and--last but most--a good-quality cassette dubbing deck, ideally with the additional capability to record live through a microphone. Interested? Then email either Doug or myself before the first half of May is up, briefly describing your dubbing armamentarium. We'll be in touch. It is a bit jarring, but I loved it straight off. The hook for me was Lester Bowie's trumpet playing--I've been a fan of the Art Ensemble of Chicago for eons now, and have seen him in concert almost as many times as I've seen Bowie (every Bowie tour since Stage). It strikes me as D. Bowie's strongest album since "Scary Monsters", though some of my friends call it his strongest since "Lodger". I *love* Tom Robinson! I saw him do an *incredible* concert looong ago, a benefit for the 1st March on Washington back when I was in college. Since I was reviewing it for my school paper, I got to go to the backstage party: talked to TR for a while, gave him a *big* hug, and ended up sitting on the floor for hours talking to Allen Ginsberg. Whew! When TR did "Glad to Be Gay", with solo guitar, the guitar crapped out in the first chorus. As he walked from the mic to the piano, the crowd sang along, and he picked up on piano without missing a beat. When he did "Walk on the Wild Side", he prefaced it with "I'd like you in the audience to imagine you're Diana Ross... I see many of you already do..." When he got to the "doot-di-doots", Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, and NYC Councilwoman Ruth Messinger, came chugging along the back of the stage, singing backups. ObHappysThirdCousinTwiceRemoved: TR cowrote some wonderful songs with Peter Gabriel, including "Bully for You" and "Merrily Up on High". This is a weak connection for a plug, but yet *another* current Austinite, Ian Matthews, has recorded a really nice solo acoustic "Mercy Street". So if I do not get to finish it I'll do it later. But first I want to tell you why and how I came to this. Yesterday (errr...last night is more correct) I met this guy I've heard about before (some guy has heard from anotheer guy that this guy has heard etc kind of stuff) I've always wanted to meet him and I did and I got him converted to a Happy-fan as well!!!!!!!!!! We listened to Happy and Tori while talking. This guy is not very much older than me but he has written one book that might revoult the entire world view. Ok, I had heard much of his theories earlier or let's say did knew somewhat like what it was/is all about. He has called it ---> A Dynamic Hydraulic World view. It builds on the following four points 1. Universal energi (All energi you can think of and all the energi you are not able to think of) 2. Universal mass (Just as above) 3. Universal emptiness (Think about how much emptiness there is in an atom If the atom had had a radius of 200-300 kms the protons and neutrons would be somewhat as big as a melon......and the .... ehhmm you would see them. The rest is emptiness.) 4. Universal Egoism (You can describe that as the soul of living creatures I guess) None of these things can exist without eachother. What is emptiness without mass? There would not be any mass without energie etc. But what about the fourth point. Has this somewhat to do with the rest? Yes, I'm going to explain this further on. You all know what a syclus is I guess. It's something that in a sort of way bites itself in the tale. Yeah, it's the first step in the whole theorie. Ok, what he is saying is that your life, the life of animals, plants, a rock (even if it's not living :)) and everything has it's own syclus. If every syclus lived it's own 'life' without touch the others it would be eternal (Carly Simon's 'Life Is Eternal' comes to mind right now). I'm sure I put in some more examples right here but I'll continue for now...But it is not like that. Just think of the reason I sit here ----> If not some people had worked in one of those places that made just these machines I would never have been sitting here and write this, I would never have met this guy I talkes to yesterday, I would never have heard about Happy and never met such a nice bunch that you all are. Ok, That means that you can think of your life as a metal feather. You will never get back to a single point on it but you will always be very close. It's the influence from other sycluses that make us all grow old. Without them we could live eternal (That's what his theorie says at least) WOW! Half an hour and I've come this far :) But what makes the whole thing just so very hard is the time. When did the time start. Hmmm, the word 'when' doesn't make sence without it :) I believe and he foes too that the time hasn't started, and it will not end as Stephen Hawkins says - His theorie says some thing like the illustration under : <(Min Time (0)) -------------------(MaxTime)-------------(Min Time (0)) > The beginning The time starts Big Bang etc go backwards in this point Pretty hard to think about, isn't it. You'll in n years read this mail backwards and not think anything about it. Silly if you ask me :) His illustration is somewhat like this A river................ ------------------------------------------------------ * (Your current location) * (future) -----------> ------------------------------------------------------ Ok, why did I mark the two spots? Hmmm, It is the most interesting point in his theory at all cause it brings in stuff that most people have neglected before. Some people dreams (Happy' 'Dreams Are') about the future in a such exact way that one can be scared. I've illustrated the time as a river. The distance between the points is not defined. It can be very big or just a tiny bit. The distance in time is here a important point though. The further the distance between now and the the future occasion the less exact is the information that returns. Yes I mean return cause how else can you know anything about hte future at all without that some sore of energy has made the way from there. The reason why it is getting less exact is that that energy is a syclus on its own and gets interacted by others just like we are. That's why some dreams seems so real - It's one of many possible futures but because you maybe meet someone will never happen at all. I guess this got to be a new record or something :) But after I had heard this I listened to Happy's songs in a complete new way. Especially songs like 'Dreams Are' and 'To Be E. Mortal' seemed different. Any of you know how she got to those lyrics? 'TBEM' made me think not only because of the eternity thought but also of the words - Live, Die, Want, Be....... Very central words in out lives. *scream* Some s*n *f * B***h has locked my CDs in (all alone in all that darkness (quote from Abyss):() Ahh, I can do it with the lyrics only (I guess). Those 4 words describe what we humans long for and that is to live as long as and as good as possible. But the word die always comes in between in a sort of way. You can't just get around it. That's why I like this theory so very much. It's explains something very important for us humans - Why do we die? Yes, because of all the influence from other sycluses. And so to 'Dreams Are'.....It not only exactly describes exactly one of my methods to find out about myself but also something else, The comunication between now and future. It's what I sometimes feel when I listen to this song. But other times I think about the destructive forces inside you that tries to tear down what you stand for/believe in. Seems like one follows the other here (BEEEEEP Override alarm.....Watch out, this might be dangerous). Ok, I thought of the song 'Ecto'. I have heard the meaning of the word even if I haven't found it in any dictionary myself...........(To be continued over the weekend) I got to find this securitas guard to get that door locked up (It should not have been closed at all :() There might be typos but I haven't gpt the time to find them now....... My absolute favorite (well, almost-but best music value at least) was from a cut-out bin in a Camelot Records (not bad-has its own alternative section at least, although whoever divides pop/rock and alternative must prefer Jazz exclusively): a group called Devils Wielding Scimitars (the album cover made me suspect it wasn't heavy metal after all).
