I'd just like to belatedly wish Harry Foster and Angelos belated birthday wishes well, I suppose the belated wishes aren't belated, which means that they're on-time belated wishes, ummm, I think I'd better stop there... And today ones to Pablo and Kjetil. While I'm at it, I won't be in on the weekend, so a big HB to Jeff "The Evil Ecto-King ;)" Burka, and to Christine Waite. I'd better be careful with nicknames actually. If that catches on, I'll be in trouble :). Anyway, May all fellow Taureans enjoy their bovine status for at least one day in a year. Geeze that's silly. But, well, there you go, I suppose. It's that time of year I think. Actually it's that time of study, generically speaking. That's what scary submission dates do to you. Only three months to go ... methinks my activity here may significantly diminish in the months ahead. And it is a Friday afternoon, after all. "Hope you're not too miffed. If you were listening in the afternoon on Thursday what you heard was "Murder" The afternoon DJ yesterday - Helen Leight - , is a big Happy fan, and is probably the only DJ at wxpn who will deviate from the "normal" Happy playlist. What a brilliant song! And the a cappella number they do >is also brilliant. Really the whole album is a *superb* debut and >I hear new things with every listen. Reminds me a bit of Kate Bush in >the way it took a while to grow on me, but now that it's there, it >is a part of me. Also, the harmonies are dischordant, yet they make >sense (Kate is great at that too). The song is "Our Faces, My Heart, Brief As Photos" and I reiterate that it is amazingly brilliant. The a cappella song I referred is "Over Oceans" (with the "say that you love me..." refrain). Has anyone besides Alan, myself, and Angie heard this CD? Gush, gush, gush. Also, to clarify the Kate Bush comparison. I also meant to say that both KT and The Story have a way of surprising me by stringing rather unpredictable (unconventional) chord changes together. Kate's best examples of this type of thing -- (well there are many, but) Fullhouse stands out, DecWBMA, hey, even WuthH. This technique, if it can be called that -- if done well -- makes songs a little harder to grasp / understand musically (since we, or at least I, have been conditioned to expect certain patterns of melody and chords), but once you get used to it, it is like a whole new musical plane opens up. I noticed in the paper today the following people coming to Chicago (most of which unfortunately I will not be able to make): Lisa Germanno, P.J. Harvey, Tuck and Patti. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 23 Apr 93 17:06:14 +0200 From: yngveh@stud.cs.uit.no (Yngve Hauge) Subject: Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to you both Pablo and Kjetil (I would have come down to see you if I had the money, but *sniff* I am only a poor student :() Hope you both have had a nice day up to now and that it continues to be so........ They made what was a quite hectic day, a bit better! I've been living under a lot of pressure lately, mostly work-related, and have not been in the brightest and cheeriest of moods. Can't wait for September, when I will take it to the west coast, for a couple of years of post-doc-ing. Saw Sun Ra's Archestra on Wednesday night, and really enjoyed it, but all this talk about Peter Gabriel Concerts has made me extremely envious... When are they going to announce the official dates and venues and start selling tickets for US shows? Grrrrrr... I treated myself to the new Bowie yesterday. I am sorry to say that I am not *at all* pleased by it. I may be overdoing it a bit, and maybe I will like it eventually. [remember equipoise? :-)] But, there is one standout track, a quasi instrumental called 'Pallas Athena' which hit me the first time I listened to it. 'God is on top of it all'. Looking forward to the EN/MSG show on Saturday. Hope they burn something. I will surely let you know I survived it. Vickie writes: >Somewheeeeerrrree over the telnet Ecccctooo waaaaits. >(Angelos, write me a song, pleaaaaassseee) Ah, Vickie, I don't do requests. I work on spontaneous brainstorms :) Like 'Showers' (to the tune of 'Runners') inspired by the recent posts about showers and the military ban. It's ironic, and uses stereotypes but I laughed for at least a millisecond over it, so I'll share it with you. Date: Fri, 23 Apr 93 12:17:38 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Why do I always find out about these things too late? Not only are the 10,000 Maniacs playing at American University (basically a mile from my house) on Sunday night, but Zap Mama is opening for them! Meredith mentioned to me 2 days ago that she thought they were playing here, but I didn't remember hearing *anything* about it. Last night a friend confirmed the "rumor" by telling me he had a ticket. This morning I found out about Zap Mama. It seems that a lot of the March On Washington rally entertainment has a decidedly Ecto bent, including but not limited to Melissa Etheridge, Indigo Girls, and Betty, all of whom have been mentioned here before (another band playing on Sunday is a local acoustic duo called disaappear fear (note kd-esque caps), comprised of 2 sisters, one of whom is a lesbian; I've heard of 'em but I've never actually heard their music) Finally, last night at a club I heard, believe it or not, a dance mix of Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street." The only thing that I can think of that's even remotely similar are DNA's versions of "Tom's Diner" and "Rusted Pipe." Believe it or not, the mix worked surprisingly well, and I'm now dying to find a copy of it. Anybody have the slightest idea what this thing is or where I might find it?
