Re: Rhodes I ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1993 10:48:23 CDT From: Subject: Skinback There seems to be some confusion emanating from my "Transitivity" thread the other day. It all has its roots in my hasty interpretation of Jeff's "Happy in Austin" subject line, which in fact prefaced his precis of a Texan friend's impressions of Happy's albums, but which I, fresh from reading a treatment of Ingrid Karklins and her Chicago concert, failed to grasp the nuances of. The bottom line, mah fellow Americans :-) (cf. the collected speeches of President Lyndon B. Johnson, a resident of Johnson City, Texas, outside of Austin), is this: like it or lump it, Happy's not coming to Austin after all. I think she should, as ought she likewise to sundry other geographical loca- tions around Spaceship Earth. My shoe size (no one has yet told my WHY you want this though they keep telling me that someone will - or that I will find out :-0 !) is 7 usually though it can go a little smaller. :-) Anyway, on to my question: a friend to whom I lent Rhodes I (Vickie: you will remember this as the guy who says "you are one lucky..." well, you remember!) is enjoying it almost emensely. He says he needs the lyrics though to get rid of the "almost" part. Are the lyrics available? Now how do I KNOW someone is going to tell me they are in an FTP file? :-) Andrea. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 21 Apr 93 19:30:26 +0200 From: yngveh@stud.cs.uit.no (Yngve Hauge) Subject: Happy in catalogue I got the catalogue from Compact Huset today and under R I found - Rhodes, Happy ------------- Equipoise 52506 145 Warpaint (91) 43265 145 It's just wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A friend played a bit of _Warpaint_ for me many months ago, and I generally liked it on the first listen, putting it in my mental "CD's I'm Going To Buy Sometime" list. I finally bought it about a month ago, and just love it to pieces! Since then I've also picked up _Ecto_ and _Equipoise_ (signed by Happy, bless her heart). _WP_'s the best of the bunch, IMHO. I'm also a musician, and I'm *very* impressed with HR's originality. Her (and Kevin's) drum arrangements are some of the best I've heard. And of course, there's that amazing voice. I don't like every song, but altogether she has many more hits than misses. When I sent off my order for _Equipoise_, I also included a copy of my own tape as a gift. She's probably too busy to listen to it now, what with the promotional zoo and all, but I hope she likes it. Sometime I'd like to talk to Kevin about how he started Aural Gratification, because I'm thinking of starting my own label as well, mainly just to reap the benefits of tax deductions. In any case, it's nice to be here. D^2 PS. Does anyone have a schedule for Laurie Anderson's tour? ======================================================================== Date: 21 Apr 93 14:43:39 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: news and reviews Alan: > May 15 Chicago "Lounge Acts" (??; maybe "Axe"??) Um, actually that would be Lounge Ax, one of my favorite club *names*. Jonathan Richman always plays there. Also, I was lucky enough to see the Reivers there before they broke up (a fine American band: buy all their music!). I only own one Dots disc, Maria Dimension. I hated when I listened to it when I bought, but I will try it again. Alan recommended 1) Golden Age 2) Crushed Velvet Apocalypse and I intend to try these soon. As for reviews of the new music I acquired in Montreal, well the new TPOH is even more disappointing than their second (their debut album is brilliant, though). Tasmin Archer is unremarkable, except that Sleeping Satellite is an amazingly contagious song. Mylene Farmer -- I haven't listened to it much yet, but she is definitely interesting enough to seek out (I like the title track, among others, from Ainsi soit je). My mom thought she sounded like a French Chanteuse, updated for the 90s, which I think is an apt description. Nice sounding disc. Mae Moore is captivating. I love the title track (Bohemia) --- it has a great feel and mood. The rest of the cd is good as well. Her voice is breathy, not quite as wet as Suzanne Vega, but similar. Her music is a lot warmer than Vega's and pleasant whisper to it. Recommended. I am still entranced by The Story. I would highly recommend Grace in Gravity to anyone. They are quirky. My current favorite song is "______ ______ My Face Brief As Photos" (I forget the 1st two words in the title)... What a brilliant song! And the a cappella number they do is also brilliant. Really the whole album is a *superb* debut and I hear new things with every listen. Reminds me a bit of Kate Bush in the way it took a while to grow on me, but now that it's there, it is a part of me. Also, the harmonies are dischordant, yet they make sense (Kate is great at that too). Finally, Gogh Van Go has some moments but I have not gotten deeply into it so far. I am still looking for Ingrid Karklins... hopefully I'll find her before she finds me. -mjm ======================================================================== From: depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (S. Very nicely produced, and the vocals are very nice. She's got a little rough edge that keeps it interesting. Alice (pronounced Ah-leech-eh) has a number of albums out. Dave Gregory (of XTC) plays guitar on this one, including a very nice E-bow solo (Kevin plays E-bowed guitar). Also featured are Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri, Jon Hassell, and Peter Hammill, who sings a duet with Alice on the final track. Her previous album is called _Park Place_ I believe, and features Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta, and Phil Manzanera. Also very nice, but not as inspired as _Il Sole Nella Pioggia_. And besides, if Dave Gregory is involved, it must be good. -- John ======================================================================== Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... First, some news: The Hapmeister, Rhodes-o-Rama, (sfx:large slap) - er, Happy will be in Detroit soon for the next leg of her radio tour. At this time, the following is firm: On April 30, Happy will be live on the radio at WDET, with Ann Delisi. Program time is 10-12 in the A.M. There will be a live acoustic set and interview. That night, Happy will be at Street Corner Records 17620 W. Thirteen Mile Rd. Birmingham, MI from 7 to 9 P.M. It's a meet and greet, like she had here in Philly at 21st Century Sound. Those of you near Detroit, this is your golden opportunity to meet a golden voice! If any ectophile plans on making it to the record store, let me know if you want Susanne to be on the lookout for you! In other news, I enclose an excerpt from Genie's Happy Rhodes BBS topic our wonderous Meredith started. Here are the first messages on the board: 17 ?rea 18 ************ Topic 18 Fri Apr 16, 1993 M.TARR1 [Meredith] at 21:47 EDT Sub: Happy Rhodes What would happen if Kate Bush and Annie Lennox sang a duet? Happy Rhodes hails from Albany, NY (though just moved to Woodstock this week). She began recording in 1986, and since then has put out 6 albums on the tiny independent Aural Gratification label. Her latest, _Equipoise_, was released in February, and the single, "Runners" recently got a rave review in Billboard. It also just charted on the Hard Report. Her music has evolved from the expression of an unhappy childhood and bad teenage years to songs about the universe at large and our place in it. It's a sometimes sombering, but always musically interesting road. Now that her career is finally taking off, it's time to yak about her on this board (only fitting, since she owes a large percentage of her success to the Internet). Go to it, folks! ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 2 Fri Apr 16, 1993 R.POCILUK [Rob-n-Pam] at 22:58 EDT Yay, a Happy place! :) I'll see if I can get a couple people over here for some chit-chat. --Pamela ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 3 Sat Apr 17, 1993 S.ZIMMERMAN3 [Scott] at 03:12 EDT Hey Meredith. I've been expecting you to start this topic since about the same time last year! Gee, cool. Here it is! I expect that the Happy fans over on $p$ will be appearing in these parts presently. The new pricing plan announced over there today is quite the joke. I just read the specifics a couple minutes ago... Seen them yet, Pamela? The coolest thing happened a couple of weeks ago. I let one of my friends borrow a couple of my Happy CDs. He put on "Equipoise" while I was over at his place and it left him completely awe struck! He was in complete disbelief that anybody's voice could sound the way that Happy's does. He really dug the music, too. Of course, it's really common for people to be immediately impressed by Happy. I had just never seen a person's first reactions be sooo positive! 'twas really cool! I just hope I can get the CDs back.... :) Scott ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 4 Sat Apr 17, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF at 09:58 EDT An intersting combo, Meredith (Kate and Annie, that is) and a very accurate way to describe Happy's vocal range! Annie is one of my all time faves, by the way. From the first moment I heard this amazing voice, I was hooked.....immediately got all 6 cd's!!! Thanks to Pam, my cd collection is "happier" than ever before! :) Lynn ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 5 Sat Apr 17, 1993 R.POCILUK [Rob-n-Pam] at 12:45 EDT Yes, Scott, I did see the new $P$ pricing. There should be a mass exodus to GEnie between now and July 1st! I've gotten to the point where I prefer GEnie anyway, so I really don't care that much about losing Plodigy. I had to laugh at the "generous allotment" of two free bulletin board hours per month. That amounts to a whopping 4 minutes per day! Anyway, back to the topic at hand! Lynn, it was an honor and a pleasure to turn you on to Happy. :) Now that you've had a little more time to listen to all six CDs (I know how hard it is to "get acquainted" with them when you buy them all at once!), what are your impressions? Any clear favorite? Jenn's just signed up with GEnie, so she should be along soon. And I've sent samplers to Christine Anderson and daniel cooksey (gotta remember, no caps :), so maybe we can get them over here too. This should be fun! --Pamela ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 6 Sat Apr 17, 1993 BRENT.WILCOX at 15:36 EDT Well, Meredith, I'll have something to add as soon as I manage to finally hear something by her (I can't find her in the stores here either!). ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 7 Sat Apr 17, 1993 T.ADAMSON [Todd] at 16:58 EDT Based on Meredith's constant ranting about Happy Rhodes, I bought her two compilation albums. Keep ranting... ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 8 Sat Apr 17, 1993 M.TARR1 [Meredith] at 17:54 EDT Compilation albums? Do you mean Rhodes I and Rhodes II? Those are the first two albums she put out. In a way I guess they are compilations, since they consist of everything she recorded in her earliest days (and, incidentally, never planned to release). I've just never heard them called "compilations" before. Those of you who may be in the Detroit area should keep your ears open- Happy will be appearing on a couple of radio stations there next weekend, and will be doing at least one in-store appearance as well. If I get more details I'll be sure to post them here. Yeah, I probably should have started this topic sooner. But hey, here it is now! :> So... what's your fave Happy album/song? At the moment I vote for Equipoise because it's what I've heard last, with favorite song "Out Like A Lamb". But in the grander scheme of things, I think my favorite song of hers is "Possessed" off Rhodes I, which is probably also my favorite album as well. But it's all relative. :) ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 9 Sat Apr 17, 1993 R.LOVEJOY1 [Bob] at 19:53 EDT Hi Folks! I'll bet some of you KNEW I'd show up here! "Follow the modem..." Anyway, glad to finally see a full-fledged Happyboard! I probably don't have to remind those gathered here that I am quite a fan! Ever since I heard "Feed the Fire" coming through my car radio thanks to WXPN here, I've been gone! I had to pull the car over and listen, it grabbed me so hard! Since then I've had the amazing fortune to become a minor part of Happy's army, and I stay in frequent contact with her manager. Happy's army, by the way, is called Ecto, named after her forth album. The Ectophiles meet on the internet, which is accessable through Genie (albeit Very Expensive!). I can help people find less expensive paths to the internet; E-mail me---oops, Email me if you'd like info. I look forward to the growth of this topic! I'm only an hour from Detroit :) and would love to see/hear her live! Any radio station info would be appreciated. Has there been any mention of her showing up in the Ann Arbor,MI area? That seem to be a more logical place for her to do an appearance. At least one of the record shops in Ann Arbor carries Happy's cd's. I need to talk to her manager this week anyway, so I'll find out for sure and let you know. Speaking of interviews, I interviewed Happy last Wednesday night, and had planned to air the thing this morning on my radio show, but when I got to the station the tape deck was dead, so that was that. Hopefully they'll get it fixed. The down side is, due to various Marches on Washington and pre- emptions by a baseball game, I'm not doing another show until May 8th. :( Timing doesn't matter, I guess, but it would have been nice to do it today. ------------ Category 17, Topic 18 Message 13 Sun Apr 18, 1993 L.KIRCHOFF at 17:23 EDT Thanks for the info on the radio staions, Bob! At Happy's concert in Albany in March '92, our own Meredith Tarr started to lust after the really cool knee-high leather boots Happy has. Whilst chatting with Happy after the concert, meth apparently thought to herself something along the lines of "Hmmm, if those boots are anywhere near my size, I could steal them!
