Equipoise brni And a Gun Re: My discovery ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 20 Apr 93 09:33:04 EDT From: mr rock n roll Subject: finfolk a while back, i made reference to a few bands from finland - varttina and ottopuurna - whose albums i had on order from green linnet records. well, they arrived. varttina is *incredible*. anyone who goes gaga over marta sebestyan or muszikas or even le mystere de voix bulgares *needs* to get this album. it's entitled _selenoiko!_. the band is essnetially a chorus of women (four or five) backed by a folkish bad who tend to veer off into new interpretations of old tunes. the ranges from frenzied polskas to a haunting wedding song sung by the groom's sister when the bride arrives at his farm. i can't understand a word of finnish, but this stuff is still incredible. amusingly, the lyrics are all rather racy.... the band started out as a teenage folk ensemble of 30-40 women and has, through the course of four albums, evloved to where they are now. the other albums are a self-titled (and self-financed) cassette/vinyl debut, _musta lindu_ and _oi dai_. i've not heard these yet, but i've been told that _musta lindu_ is the best of the lot as the band was over- promoted and burned out by the third album. despite that and despite reviews claiming that _seleniko!_ is derivative and not innovative, i still think it's pretty fantastic. so there. ottopuurna, on the other hand, is a more traditional instrumental ensemble who tend to mix celtic and folk musics into their heritage of finnish folk. it's not exactly where my tastes typically run, but if you enjoy fairly straight-froward traditional folk with tastes of celticism in it, you will probably like this as well. i've also tracked down another band called hedningarna who have two albums out that i know of. the first is extremely hard to come by (which i have not, but would like to). the second is called _kalski!_ and is quite enjoyable. the basically reintepret traditional songs (and a few originals) in a modern context. two women provide vocals. it's really quite fascinating. unfortunately, it's only available on import in the united states. sigh. at least i found a used copy for $14 instead of a new one for $20something. i know there are a few finnish folks on ecto. if any of them would care to talk about some of the bands that are currently making waves in finland, i know i'd at least be interested. woj ======================================================================== Date: 20 Apr 1993 15:31:41 -0400 (EDT) From: SANDOVAL@stsci.edu Subject: A few misc thoughts... Hi everyone! I have been pretty busy for the past two weeks, so I haven't written to Ecto in awhile. It looks like there's a few things I want to comment on... Vickie said: >I just found out yesterday that Neil Jordan also directed _The Company >of Wolves_, a movie we *loved*! I knew about _Mona Lisa_ and _High Spirits_ >(I wonder if there's a "director's cut" of that film, or at least, any >outtakes of Mary Coughlin performing. I'd been meaning to watch it again since I found out that >Danielle Dax is in it (though her part is very small, I heard.) >The Company of Wolves R 1985 >Stars Angela Lansbury, David Warner, Sarah Patterson >"Neither a horror film nor a fantasy for the kiddies, this dark, >psychologically oriented rendering of the "Little Red Riding >Hood" story is for thinking viewers only. Angela Lansbury stars >as Grandmother, who turns the dreams of her granddaughter (Sarah >Patterson) into tales of spooky terror." >...and I really couldn't describe it any better than that. This really is a good movie. Interestingly enough, we had to watch it for a Children's Literature class. It has all the classic elements of fairy tales (growing up, separation anxiety, etc). Plus, it's quite scary at parts. :) I definitely recommend it. And any Children's Literature classes that you can take. I think they are stretching for significance at times (Jack and The Beanstalk: Jack's jelious of his fathers, um, physical attributes :)) I did realize for the first time, that the witch in Hansel and Gretel is PROBABLY supposed to be their step-mother. That one threw me for a loop... :) >From Meredith: >Bob Lovejoy reports: >}Just had a peek at Genie. Jennifer and I signed up again last night. We were on GEnie last year about this time, but dropped it when we moved from San Diego to Maryland. Since Prodigy seems committed to commercial suicide, we decided to sign up again. (For those who don't know about Prodigy, they WERE the only on-line service to charge a flat rate of $14.95 a month for unlimited BBS use. Well, they have decided to change their rates and charge hourly for BBS's. It'll be $3.60/hour. Taking an average month, our bill would be around $120. They MUST be crazy... Don't be surprised if Prodigy goes under within a year, and Sears right after (Prodigy is a subsidiary of Sears and IBM.)) Enough about that. We should be on-line Wednesday night, so I'll drop a note in the Happy subject when I get there. On other topics... I sent my sister a Happy sampler that I made. She LOVES it. She says it's all she's been listening too. She's a senior in high school and has been having a rough year, so she can relate to some of Happy's thoughts. :) And knowing my sister, she's playing Happy for all her friends too. Hopefully, next year she'll be able to get a computer account at college, so she can join Ecto... Oh, and she's the Tori fan in the family. :) Actually, my mom likes Tori, Happy, and Kate too. :) Vickie, did you ever get the note I send to you about Equipoise and Ecto(the album)? Well, I've taken up enough bandwidth. Take care, everyone!
