Re: Nina Hagen Ectophilia starting with B ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 5 Apr 1993 15:09:03 CDT From: Subject: Explicating the Aaack and other stories Angelos angeloses: >Another brief note to Mitch, to ask him to decipher some of the mystique >surrounding the anguished AAAAAACK!! that Cathy yelled in his post. In the hope that his email reader won't yet have eaten this post by the time he returns from Montreal (the only Canadian city I know to share its name with a brand of bottled soft drink I have encountered occasionally in Chicago super- markets--whose slogan, ironically, is "The All-American Drink")), I offer the following few (!? :-) ) words of decryption. When I was eyeballing the latest dispatches from the front in the Gaffa flame war a few days ago, it seemed to me that the whole thing was generating more heat than light--as, in a sense, has every flame war that has occurred later in historic time than the one that Fred Allen and Jack Benny waged on the radio all those decades ago. The exchange of comments (or were they epigraphs?) between Jorn and Jon gave me an idea for a bit of quick and dirty wordsmithing that would presumably reflect, albeit obscurely, the consensus of many others that the whole thing had been at least 9X oversampled :-). The epigram "AAAAACK" is lifted from no particular occurrence of the comic strip _Cathy_, in which it is often uttered by the title character (no relation, presumably, to either the young Kate Bush or the protagonist from _Wuthering Heights_ in reaction to sundry Intensifications of Nervous Stimulation (cf. Georg Simmel, "The Metropolis and Mental Life) of large, small or in-between magnitude. On another aspect of this general issue, Meredith merediths on my lead in to the reproduction of my Gaffa post: >} Meredith has lately been exchanging volleys with the best of them. > >Or the worst, as the case may be... "The best of them," in this case, referred to the world class of riposters to flames, among which I count Meredith's comeback lines in gaffa, rather than the flamers themselves, whom she has indeed characterized perceptively in many cases. BTW: my post made it into the gaffa newsfeed, and so far I haven't been flamed once. Guess the moral is that if you're going to comment on a gaffa flame war, you can CYA by couching it in terms only ectophiles can understand :-). WRT another current thread on gaffa, btw: I read in the paper over the week- end that the rumored collaboration between Willie Nelson and Sinead O'Connor on one of the former's new album tracks is real. Peter Gabriel is, reportedly, slated to perform on Saturday Night Live next week. WRT Meredith's playlists appearing in this list: my thought is, sure, why not? The closest historical connection I can claim to the lapine species is the fact that the premiere issue of _Playboy_ was edited in my old neighborhood, where me and Hef both happened to be living (in separate houses) back in 1953. For all that, I can't claim that the _Ecto_ album has induced any behavioral change in my cat, because I haven't played it in a great while. Be that as it may, _something_ seems to have made him stop trying to climb the wires on the phones and the AC adaptor when I play my CDs. Yesterday, uncharacteristically but refreshingly, he catnapped in another room for all the time I was entangled in said cords. Maybe _Ecto_ isn't the governing variable after all :-). Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 05 Apr 93 19:15:13 CST From: kiri Subject: The SOS theory yea know it suddenly occured to me, since I sometimes see Save our Souls in a sarcastic light, i wonder what SOS really stands for.... My current opinion....SOS = same old shit... Since the song is very tongue in cheek IMHO... this makes perfect sense. Think this is a pile of malarky, or could it be true? :) :) in other news Saw Until the end of The World for the first time this past weekend. I liked it a great deal cept for one thing. The leading actress drove me nuts... I swear I have NEVER Seen anyone smile so much in my life.. It was highly irritating to watch her, plus I found the character to be just sooo oo i don't know, i can't quite put my finger on it... disturbing i guess... Otherwise I thought the movie was great, cewl music, cewl story etc. etc. :) ok brief Equipoise review: Love the album. The vocals are superb. Happy obviously pulled out all stops in two areas...the vocals, and the percussion. Now the percussion in Warpaint drove me nuts, but the percussion in Equipoise is brilliant. There are a couple parts of the album that are obviously lacking though. The horns in SOS still bug me, and there are a couple of keyboard sections that sound awful, like they were done on an ancient keyboard. I know I know nit-picky stuff but still...:) Otherwise there are few flaws in the album as a whole. Oh my goddess how could I fail to mention that the cover makes me absolutely swoon. I would have bought the album just for the cover. That balance of humanity and machine is tres choice. My favorite songs...Closer, COhabitants, and my all time favi I Say. I rarely see people mention I Say, but I think it's absolutely brilliant. I just sort of sway whenever I hear that song. Of course I also like the vamp songs very much. Runners bit the big one on my cd already, something happened and the disc was scratched, fortunately only a few seconds of the song were ruined. I'll probably get another disc sometime, but funds are tighter than an orangutans well whatever....:) Overall I give the album two thumbs and toes up!! Oh one other thing... I wish they had recorded the bagpipes louder, is it just my disc, or can you barely hear them on all the cds?? later folx, kIrI byhargie@vm.cc.olemiss.edu ======================================================================== Date: 05 Apr 1993 21:36:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Suspended In Duct Tape Subject: Interview date etc. Hi! Thanks to everyone who has sent questions so far. Keep 'em coming... they're all quite good. I finally got hold of Susanne tonight, and unless Happy has something else going on at that time, our interview will happen at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, April 13th. I'll accept questions until Monday evening. Today a strange package came in the mail for me from Japan. I have absolutely NO CLUE who it's from or how they got my address, but inside was two tapes and one CD of underground Japanese music. I haven't checked out the tapes yet, but the CD is a hoot- it appears to be a sampler (everything is in Japanese so I'm finding this out as I go along), whereby one band has two or three tracks. The first was a weird Philip Glass-ish mix of piano, strings and vocals, and now I'm listening to something involving a triangle, an accordion, and a female singer, kind of like Shogun Polka. (And I think this song is a Japanese version of something from Fiddler on the Roof...) I think the intent is for me to play this on my show, since it was addressed to Meredith Tarr- WESU". I really want to, as a novelty item if nothing else. The arrival of this package, however, remains shrouded in mystery, and is exceedingly bizarre. Response has been favorable, so I'm going to go ahead and post my playlist from this past week. I have plenty of old ones to keep us busy until my next show on the 18th (I'm taking Easter off), so stay tuned! Date: Mon, 05 Apr 93 23:09:57 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu Today I found a copy of Kirsty MacColl's _Electric Landlady_ for $6! I almost *never* get deals like that on CDs...particularly ones that have been on my want-list for almost 2 years. It's quite nice! This weekend at the Old Dominion Stunt Kite Championships, I flew a ballet routine to KaTe's "Under Ice." Another guy I know flew to "This Woman's Work." There was an Experienced Pairs Ballet routine to Enya's "Book of Days" and a Master Pairs Ballet to a kd lang song that I don't know the name of (it was very country, so I'm assuming it wasn't from _Ingenue_). That was the only one of the bunch that won a first place. Still no Happy in competition. I'm still trying to pick a song that really jumps out and screams some sort of choreography to me. I've flown quite often to _Warpaint_ and _Rearmament_, but nothing specific in the sense of a set routine has really occurred to me yet. I'm going to stick with "Under Ice" for a while, 'cause there's a lot more I can do with the song. It was very easy to choreograph. I had originally planned on using "Army Dreamers" (I love the waltz time), but I was having trouble getting a handle on it and coming up with a routine that fit the song well. I switched mental gears and started considering "Under Ice" and I basically had the routine choreographed before I even touched a kite. It turns out that I'm also capable of listening to "Under Ice" close to 100 times in a week without getting tired of it in the least, which is a real plus in my book. Jeff |Jeffrey C. As I said before I just have translated one song, and I will post it next week (or even earlier, if I can get my uucp and the other stuff running @home...) > was from Germany. I've also heard tales of her dropping acid on the > Berlin Wall. (I tend to doubt that one, but you never know.) I don't doubt this at all, at least if it was from the West Berlin side of the wall. The wall was always easy to reach from the west side. It just was there. So all those kilometers of concrete were always filled with loads of grafitti (even I did some...) The East German border guards have not been lucky about this one, but all you would have to do if they come near is just step a single step back, so there wasn't any danger in 'penetrating' the wall. And I don't see there's any difference in difficulty to use acid instead of a spray can. Remember: Nina was expelled from East Germany.
