Another brief note to Mitch, to ask him to decipher some of the mystique surrounding the anguished AAAAAACK!! that Cathy yelled in his post. And finally a see ya in a week to the rest of you! Mitch mitches: }I have just submitted the following, admittedly rather cryptic }comment to Gaffa WRT the recent flame war there, in which our }own Meredith has lately been exchanging volleys with the best of }them. Or the worst, as the case may be... and I only joined the brawl when my own name was taken in vain (for no reason I can decipher, btw). And Mitch, your post was positively hysterical! :) Neile queries: }Am I right in assuming that since you made a shameless plug for }a book written by someone with the same last name as yours that }you are related to the author? Yep. She's my one (and only, thank the deities ;) older sister. }That's cool--I really like Judith Tarr's books, and am }especially fond of The Hound and the Falcon Trilogy, which is }IMHO one of the best trilogies in the genre. Really magic, if }that's not too much of a pun. That's really great. She'll be glad to hear it! It's still a rare thing for me to run into someone who is familiar with her work who wasn't introduced to it by one of the family or who isn't a friend of hers or something. She does have a lot of fans, I just haven't randomly encountered many of them... Bob elucidates about Einsturzende Neubauten: }The cause of the fires is that the drummer sets up his cymbals }upside-down, fills them with kerosene, and plays them as they }"burn"... The cymbals form a dish for the fuel. Well, ***that's*** one of the stupider things I've ever heard of. }On her interview last weekend, Happy commented on the "wine & }cheese" flap. She doesn't appreciate being thought of as }elitist and suggested those who think of her as such raise their }standards! Where is it written that music has to hit you over }the head to be valid? Yay, Happy. I was in the Wesleyan library this afternoon photocopying my playlist, and I checked out the Periodicals room for the new Billboard, so I could copy the review of "Runners" for myself. They still only had last week's copy on the shelf, but I looked through it anyway and found a very favorable review of Arson Garden's single "Drink A Drink Of You". I know there are a few people around here for whom that's welcome news. :) Speaking of playlists... I asked a while back if people would like me to post my playlists here, and the response was generally favorable, but unfortunately at the time uploading my playlists via America Online was pretty much impossible. Now that I'm on Delphi and everything I post is uploaded from my word processor, and I type in my playlists for posting to GEnie anyway, it would be no problem at all for me. It's only a question now of whether people would enjoy the use (or waste) of bandwidth. Whaddya think, people? This is an official call for questions to ask Happy when I interview her via telephone for broadcast during Champagne Jam on WESU on 18 April, 1993. (At this time the exact date and time of the interview is still TBA, since I'm having trouble getting in touch with Susanne White, but I hope to conduct the interview early in the week of 12 April, and edit it or whatever for broadcast during my show.) Since people in Connecticut for the most part have no clue who the hell Happy Rhodes is, I'll have to ask some of the standard questions to start with, but I hope to get into some areas not yet explored in interviews with her so far. That's where I need your help! Feel free to post your questions to ecto, but be sure to CC me! It's a lot easier for me to deal with separate personal messages than those culled from various ecto digests. Please send your question ideas to me at: meth@delphi.com (I'll try my best to give credit where it's due during the interview, so Happy knows whom to blame afterwards. ;) I'll let you know when the interview is happening as soon as I set it up with Susanne. Thanks in advance! [Meredith, I think you should ask the shoe-size question as an ice breaker :-)] a) What inspired you to use Tirk for representing your dark side in the cover of Equipoise? What prompted you to name him and why Tirk? Is it a new monster or part of your existing monsters? Do you still find time to paint, now that you are successful as a musician? People have expressed the opinion that monster covers are *really* bad marketing strategy for your albums, it's sort of negative false advertising, they might expect to hear some death metal band or something. I was surprised that after Warpaint you returned to the monsters. Why was that? (Of course others find them scary but still are intrigued by the contrast and love them (others=me :-) ). b) Is 'Runners' a tongue-in-cheek song, or are you serious about all the dangers you mention? c) In Mother Sea you mention, 'now I know what my godmother was for'. What do you mean by that? d) Do you like chocolate? What's your favorite candy bar? [sorry couldn't resist] e) How would you react to covers of your songs? Are you very 'possessive' of them, or do you feel detached from them once you know that others have heard them . [ This inspired by her recent cover of 'Ashes to Ashes'] Why did you chose that Bowie song? What other songs would you like to cover? Which songs do you wish you had written? f) Why aren't you using the acoustic guitar as much as you used to? Is it because of all the fancy synths that you have access to? g) If you could visit *any* place on earth or the universe, where would you chose to go? And who would you chose to go with you on that trip? h) How would you feel if Weird Al or someone else wrote parodies of your songs? Would you be flattered or outraged? [ :-) ] That's all I can think of wanting to ask Happy right now. I notice there aren't many song-related questions that have troubled me in the past, but I can't remember them now. Anyway that's a start. angelos ------- 'My brains fall out, they're loosely wrapped'- Happy Rhodes ======================================================================== From: depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (S. (interestingly, for some unknown reason, vertebrae mailed me a copy of the _wisteria_ cd, which i already had, as well. i've already given it away though....) i think there was mention of some finnish folk music recently. the new green linnet catalog, which arrived saturday, has two releases of finn origin in their xenophile line which i plan on ordering tomorrow. one is va"rtina"'s _seleniko_ (which is what i believe was mentioned) which is described as four female folksters fronting a full ensemble of folk instruments. the blurb given is "muzsikas on speed", which is more than enough to convince me to buy it! the other is a self-titled release from ottopasuuna, a contemporary finnish folk quartet who blend traditional folk with folk music from other cultures. also sounds interesting and is also being ordered. full report on receipt.... regarding the belly thread of late: i saw belly and velocity girl two week- ends ago at the knitting factory (who woulda thunk? an alternative rock show at the knitfac...). it was a much better show than the one that greg and i saw back last october if only because it was more energetic and immediate. tanya has a lovely voice and can use it effectively on slow ballady songs, but, live, they are best sticking to straight-ahead, uppity pop. which, of course, they did. it was a good solid show and those of you who haven't seen them yet, but are going to, are going to enjoy it. promise. money back guarantee. :) oh, i wasn't to impressed by the new bassist, gail. she seemed out of place with this band somehow. she did play mighty fine though.... continuing in the 4ad-band concert vein, i'll just note that his name is alive is fantastic live and vickie and kIrI are loony to think otherwise. ;) honest! ask senor footah! he saw 'em too! i'll refrain from commenting on the state of "alternative radio," except to note that the decline that others have perceived has been occuring since as early as the mid 80s when emptv and record companies realized that there was money to be had in promoting some music to be "alternative" or "progressive." in the late 80s when i was managing a college station, my biggest complaint (besides the distinct lack of people interested in deejaying) was that so few of our jocks had a *clue* what was and wasn't mainstream. to the majority of them, the pop progressive (as i called it) promoted by 120 minutes and post- modern emptv was all they knew. "modern rock" stations like whfs and kits just continue this sorry state of affairs. wxpn suffers from this as well, happy-supporters or no. i noted that beth mentioned courage of lassie in one of her infrequent posts. they had a release on c'est la mort records a few years ago which i was fond of. kinda strange, acoustic stuff and they did a magnificently weird cover of creedence clearwater revival's "will it ever stop the rain?" with a vague dylanesque flair. nice stuff. (beth, i admit as to not having sent sara craig a letter yet - this week! i promise!) y'all can count me as a camper van beethoven fan, even despite their college radio successes. ;) wacky and weird and wonderful. i'm surprised that my tape of _vampire can mating oven_ still works (checked on it tonight and it does ;) and i'm happy to find that the early stuff has been rereleased - i can replace my worn out cassettes now. regarding the destruction of stages at concerts, there is a funny story about a performance by frank tovey's old band fad gadget. at one concert, they literally brought the house down. frank was swinging on a pipe that extended out over the stage and his added weight brought the ceiling in the venue falling on the heads of the crowd. not nearly as spectacular and burning cymbals perhaps, but amusing nonetheless. :) if i had my way, i'd have a long ponytail as well, but my hair, much to meredith's dismay, is not too cooperative. it grows very slowly and i also work for a company that is propably noted for its conservative nature. currently though, it is longish in back and well over the collar (though short on top). if i can do anything about it, it'll just keep getting longer in back. hair tonic anyone? :) as a sidenote, i'll note that when i inter- viewed for said conservative company (who shall remain nameless), i had a eight-inch tail which i wore braided over my shoulder. i still don't know why i was hired.... almost finally, i'd like to quote meredith on the topic of people leading lucky lives: "woj, you have a fucking charmed life." :) finally, i'd like to introduce you all to my new kitten! she's currently sacked out on the bed so you'll be spared the unintelligable nonsense that would have appeared on your screen if i allowed her to walk across the keyboard. when my roommate moved out two weeks ago, the first thing i did was visit my officemate whose cat dropped a litter last december and picked up the kitten than he had been holding for me. she's white with black and brown patches along her back on on her head and tail. she has a massive purr, sharp claws, big ears, two black dots on her nose and a penchant (for history? ;) for getting into trouble. due to a tendency to slide around on the floor and a resemblance in personality to a character from the bard's _midsummer night's dream_, i realized that her name was puck. :) she's way cool and that's all i could ever hope for in a cat. oops - she woke and a chirped at me. i think she likes you all. :) i think that's it. hopefully, i'll be able to keep on top of ecto for a while now that work has cooled off a little. enjoy! woj ======================================================================== Subject: Rabbit/Radio From: metatron!joe@dogface.austin.tx.us (Joe Zitt) Date: Mon, 05 Apr 93 01:46:14 CDT brni writes: >well, its not just that. he refuses to come out no matter what is playing, >now that i've brought _ecto_ into the house. i've been taping they might >be giants _lincoln_ and _flood_, and he still won't budge. he doesn't come >out when belly is playing, or when sisters of mercy are playing. The distribution of votes is amazingly flat as 66 songs received at least one vote. The lonely songs which have not received any votes are: Box H.A.P. She behaves the same way for a few other albums as well. When I put in EQP, Io trots into the parlor, sits down in the middle of the rug, and MEOW! So if we don't have visitors who might report me to the Humane Society, I snatch the little beast up and sort of dance with/shake and rock her for a few songs. Then I plop her back in the center of the rug, and shethere until the album ends. My wife claims the cat only does this because she likes to be abused -- held upside-down and danced in bobbing circles -- and she knows I'll do it if she runs in and howls at me when I play EQP. I doubt this theory, though, because the behavior started immediately when I got EQP, and I didn't start the dancing game until weeks later.
