But Belly with Leslie on bass... btw, while I'm in Muse mode, I have a somewhat bizarre item--a recent (Oct 8 and 9, 1992) Throwing Muse live album, called "The Curse", recorded in London. It appears to be a legitimate 4AD release, though the packaging is fairly flimsy cardboard and plastic, not a jewel box, and on the back just above the UPC symbol it says "A Temporary Release". Total running time is 66:32, and includes one cover (Jimi Hendrix's Manic Depression). The list of tracks on the back is complete, but also completely out of order, and the sound is pretty miserable--the vocals are mixed far too low, and the guitar far too loud. Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1993 12:31:33 -0800 (PST) This is just a quick note to say "Hi!" to my fellow ectopians and to introduce myself as one of the newer members of the fold. I have recently moved here (Santa Cruz, Ca.) from the UK on a two year work assignment, so I'm currently trying to reorganize my life. The three most important tasks I have set myself are... 1. Finding a home for my family. 2. Establishing a credit rating. 3. Getting hold of the entire Happy Rhodes back catalog :-) Now that 1 and 2 are pretty much tied down, I thought it was time to start working on number 3. ( can anyone help me out here ? ) My exposure to HR up to now has been a CD borrowed (taped) from a friend in the UK. This has seen me thru the past 6 months (no net access til now ).. but now I'm starting to have nightmares about getting my precious tape mangled or wiped so it's time to act ! One other threadlike tidbit from the interview: Happy wrote most of EQP on the keyboards. Ed was trying to get her to play some other songs from the album but she noted that she'd have to re-learn them for guitar! Hope all is well with everybody! Again, I'll be taping this Sunday AM for more acoustic songs and patter, and yes, I'll remember that Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend! More later... Bob Lovejoy ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1993 14:32:00 CST From: Subject: Reflected glory? and other flights of fancy Yesterday's _Tribune_, in its favorable review of the concert by Nanci Griffith and Iris DeMent the other night, said something about the former that I'd like to think may be just as applicable not only to Happy, but to midlisters every- where: Griffith, 38, is among a growing legion of "'tweeners" who are forging successful careers in the margins of the record business. That is to say, they fall between the cracks of tightly formatted radio playlists and lack the multiplatinum record sales of which People magazine cover stories are made, yet are still finding a receptive audience of middle-age adults and yuppies with a yen for graceful melodies and resonant voices. Speaking of People Magazine: the current issue reports that the putative state of kd lang and Martina Navratilova being an item is erroneous. WRT the inquiries on Belly's bassist: Apart from Tanya Donnelley, the band consists entirely of two brothers, whose names I have forgotten. They will, as mentioned before, be appearing at 2:30 tomorrow at Rose on Ashland, appar- ently in connection with their gig tomorrow night at Metro. Last night, _World News Now_ did the weather to the accompaniment of Carole King and David Crosby performing live, in separate clips, at an environmental festival in Portland, the name of which I have forgotten. Yesterday's _Trib_ also had a piece on what popular music C-SPAN could use as alternatives to the classical music it now uses exclusively for accompaniment to its live Congressional coverage during votes, gaps in the debates, etc. Examples they cite of possible selections include the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night" during filibusters, Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile" WRT Republican dissents from the Clinton budget steamroller, etc. In eyeballing the Happy discography, I've come up with a few, if only a few, things they might use: "Don't Want To Hear It" for motions to invoke cloture against a filibuster. "Given In" for the ultimate abandonment of said filibuster. "No One Here" for quorum calls "The Wretches Gone Awry" for just about any pork-barrel bill "Under and Over the Brink" for debates on armed intervention in Bosnia "Where Do I Go" for debates on the admission of Haitian refugees to the U.S. "The Issue Is" for anyone arguing for an unpopular viewpoint "I Am A Legend" for that venerable Washington institution, the Photo Opportun- ity "Friend You'll Be" for inquiries into relations between the Congress and special interests "Wrong Century" for speeches espousing reactionary points of view "I Won't Break Down" for hearings on new weapons systems (Kate's "Army Dream- ers" would also be appropriate here--and, for that matter, for proceedings on any sort of defense appropriation) "To Live In Your World" for the hearings on gays in the armed forces "Runners" for debates on just about any health or environmental quality issue "Save Our Souls" for debates on NASA appropriations Anybody have other ideas? Part of those can already be found in the archives but I think this is far from complete. Angelos asked: > Has anybody here ever seen Einsturzende Neubauten live? What are their > shows like? Sorry, I'm not familiar with that band, but I can make a connection to someone we know. The drummer of EN is (or was) FM Einheit who has been mentioned on ecto about a year ago. He has been doing theatre music with the Rainbirds, and on that Rainbird show I've written about a couple of days ago, they also played something from a band/project where FM Einheit and Ulrike Haage were members. It seems that I should give R.A. MacAvoy a try, seeing her mentioned here so many times. And with a sf con in a couple of days there'll be a good chance to find a copy of one of her books. Bob and Beth mentioned Spirit, and I remembered that their "Spirit of 76" was the first album that I had imported.
