Wow! As some readers in gaffa might have noticed among the flambage, Vickie's donation to the Public Library apparently is visible enough that someone actually borrowed it, and posted his reactions (negative ones, alas :-(). Hopefully the emergence of Equipoise in Chicago area record stores is an indication of the increasing popularity of Happy inspired partly by that. Did anyone catch Happy in prime time live? They had a special on cyberspace and its cult idols, inspired partly by the recent media coverage of the internet and found the letter sent to them of particular interest, and so decided to invite Happy. I admired her composure and her acoustic cover of 'Five years' was amazing. ;-) But seriously, I am surprised at the attention the internet is getting. First TIME has a cover story, then the Phoenix has a special on BBS's, then RS talks about the same stuff, and recently in articles about King Missile, they mention the existence of an electronic fan club, and the latest TIME talks about a mailing list/newsgroup entirely in Klingon (!). Wow! I, too, have noticed this, and I attribute it to the making public of an e-mail address through which you can reach the whitehouse. Most everything I've seen (and I must admit, I haven't seen the TIME articles (I'm doing good find time to read all my electronic stuff; who has time for this paper concept ;) ), in some way or other either mentioned it or Gore's ideas on the role of computers et al. >From what I understand, however, the government is being its typical self about the e-mail. Last I heard the mail was just sitting there, piling up in huge chunks waiting for Official Procedures and Regulations to be drafted, modified, okay'd, and enacted WRT just what the **** they should do with all of the stuff. A snail-mail letter will be acted on more quickly. sigh. Leave it to bureaucracy to slow e-mail down beyond the level of the post office. 8) ramble ramble, bob ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1993 16:32:14 CST From: Subject: RKO Rhodio Pictures? and other stories Chip chips: >_City_Slickers_ > The other day I was visiting my neighbors and they were watching >City Slickers. I'd seen it before, but never noticed that the woman >who plays Billy Crystal's wife looks a lot like Happy. Anyone else >notice this, or am I just crazy? I think that's Patricia Wettig from _Thirtysomething_. Never really gave it much thought before, but I guess she does look something like Happy. This is fortuitous; we now know who's the best-qualified actress in the world to play the lead in _The Happy Rhodes Story_, should the hacks who run the studios ever be persuaded to make such an epic :-). Sorry to disappoint Angelos, but the Gaffan who borrowed the Warpaint (to which happy birthday, BTW) CD borrowed it from the Urbana, Ill. public library. The one which Vickie donated to the public library in Chicago, alas, has never yet made it to the shelf in my experience. So much for the old shibboleth that Chicago is light years ahead of downstate Illinois WRT culture, and possibly everything else :-). I assume that Angelos' precis of Happy's appearance on last week's _Prime Time Live_ was a spoof. If it had actually happened, they would undoubtedly have rerun the story on _World News Now_ later that night--which they didn't. But at least, we know now that if it ever comes to pass, we can catch her act with- out having to sacrifice _LA Law_ (which needs an audience at least as much thes e days) in the process. Two days ago, it was sunny and warm in Chicago, yesterday it was cold and rainy, and today it's cold and snowy. An old teacher of mine once observed, "In Chicago, winter is the season after spring." He is right. Apparently it's been enough to send me into high hibernation mode; I got as far as watching the front end of Letterman, then zonked out not only on Rosanne Cash's appearance (as per usual, what can anyone tell me?) but all the way through _World News Now_ as well, ultimately waking up about an hour and a half later than normal. Celebrating the return of Bob Edwards to _Morning Edition_. Moments ago, I was walking over a crust of ice between layers of snow, and it occurred to me that the City of Chicago's annual ban on overnight parking on certain key streets during the winter months expired last night. I can't think of a finer natural April Fool's observance. Just a thought: If the White House places enough weight on the incoming email when making decisions, will we, in time, have an administration that looks like America Online? (Then again, there are those who might applaud a govern- ment that takes no more than 8KB to do anything :-) ). It looks like Equipoise has finally made it to Austin, TX (other than my copy). I glanced at the record store ad on the back of our free weekly alternative paper today. They are having a big storewide sale and one of the album photos in the ad is of Equipoise. They printed Happy Rhodes above the picture and Aural Gratification below it. This just adds further credence to the common conception of Austin being a great music town! ;-) -Rodney ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 2 Apr 93 01:08:08 EST From: justin@campion.crim.ca (Justin Bur) Subject: Ecto Fete! about three weeks ago you may remember dreaming about having read a message with the same title as this one... yes, the dream was real. The Montreal gathering seems to be happening Thursday 8 April (the evening before Good Friday) at sevenish or so in the old part of Saint-Laurent, a 1930s streetcar suburb of Montreal. We're upstairs on the right-hand (north) side of the house. by car from downtown: get on the Ville-Marie expressway (720) westbound, take Decarie expressway (15) northbound. When you approach the interchange with highway 40, stay in the middle lane; follow the signs for Laurentian Boulevard (117), but at the last moment veer right onto Decarie Boulevard instead. Under the railway tracks, past one traffic light, then turn right at the next light (Du College). Three blocks later (after one light but before the next) turn left onto Filiatrault. Parking is allowed on one side of the street only; it changes every day except Sunday at noon. Choose the side where everyone else is, it's probably safe. :-) Or just phone and ask for directions. A note on the weather: This week, it was spring on Monday, summer on Tuesday (shorts & t-shirts), fall on Wednesday, and winter on Thursday (complete with blizzard) in Montreal. This is not an exaggeration and it is perfectly normal in April. Next week the weather could be just about anything but a tropical rainstorm (we don't get those at least!). You have been Warned. Vickie, Is there any sign of the near completion of the HGP and HBP tapes for distribution yet? It's nearly a year since I originally sent out my 2 tapes for the HBP along with the appropriate jiffy bag and postage and about 5 months since sending you the tapes, jiffy bag and postage for the HGP and I have not heard anything since you emailed the list to say that you had received the HBP tapes from Greg and a little later when you said that you had received my HGP tapes. Sorry to be a bit of a bore on the subject and I'm sure that you have a perfectly good reason for the delay, but there is a fair chance that I may be moving on shortly and will not be able to get back onto the list ( this is only a possibility), and I'll not be able to make any further enquiries if this happens.
