I also heard today on a message posted on the e-mail system at work that Belly is coming to Portland in late June for some "Lollapalooza" concert thing that has a lot of "alternative" bands in it. Well, from the interview, I understood this to mean that, due to her role in the movie, she hoped people would think this. That is, if she was convincing as a bi in the film, and if people, as they often do, confuse real life with life on the silver screen, then ergo she would hope that some people would think she was bi in real life. That she really did try dating women is interesting. Was this done as preparation for the role, or as a life choice/experiment? Surprise! They were actualyl playing Happy on the local radio station (KXE in White River Junction, Vermont). After it finished, the DJ (Maria Black) said, "There was a real "happy" song about environmental catastrophe, from Happy Rhodes". I called up and told them how pleased I was to hear them playing Happy, but I didn't get a chance to ask how they found out about her. I mentioned the station to Kevin with one of my CD orders - maybe he sent them a sample. Well excuse me Steve, but I like some of the bands that have appeared in previous Lolla's and for your information it is quite possible that Peter Gabriel is going to get involved with this tour at some of its stops. Saying that these bands 'lack musical ability' is way too much. Just say you don't like them. What's wrong with playing too loud and screaming a lot anyway? Locally, Sound Warehouse seems to have anticipated carrying them with some consistency, as evidenced by their putting her name on a delimiter card in the bin at their Rush Street store. Rose, ad- mittedly a regional rather than a national chain, generally has a fair selec- tion (not always the same titles) in the generic R bin at Ashland; I don't know how things are in the rest of the chain, though I have not seen her CDs at Wab- ash lately. I've never seen Happy's stuff at either Coconuts (the local equiv- alent of Strawberries) or Musicland (the local equivalent of Sam Goody). WRT Uli's acccount of the glitches in his Suzanne Vega dubs: Dunno why, but I find it vaguely reassuring to hear that the technical problems of putting CDs on _Tonba"nder_ are the same around the world, in any language :-). Yngve writes: >For some reason my cd-player wanted to start at the 3. song and as if that >wasn't enough for reason it repeated that song 4 times and then went on :) I'm wondering if there's a glitch in the disk (assuming that others work norm- ally) that's causing the counter to behave abnormally. The first disk in my Jefferson Airplaine box set works fine when the counter is set to show the elap sed time on the current track, but the setting for total time left on the disk starts at thirty-some minutes (on a 20-track disk); when it hits zero, it reset s at 99 minutes (more time than will fit on a single CD in the first place), while the setting for time left in the current track--which behaves normally prior to that point--would have one belioeve there's an hour or so remaining in that selection (Some Airplane songs are long, but not that long :-). ) How common are these apparent manufacturing errors, which have nothing to do with the quality of the recorded sound? Neile reports the presence in her system of >some caffeine stirring my blood. Good old Seattle coffee Chicago, too, is dotted with Starbucks stores, and were there a way to buy their stuff by the cup without being eaten out of house and home, price-wise (particularly if you buy a side of baked goods to buffer your gastric walls against the extra-strength sleep inhibitor), it would be perfect accompaniment to going on a bender of _ba"nder_, keeping your mental faculties propped up enough to absorb the nuances of the music. On the other hand, nothing works indefinitely, and there's always the risk that the stuff will become refractory in the middle of Belly on Letterman or something like that, and you'll end up like me--watching _World News Now_ more than anything else on the airwaves :-). Speaking of which: Even if I'd been lucid at that hour, I would not have gotte n the news of Belly's appearance until this morning. I cannot believe I'm alon e in this predicament. Can anybody give a precis? Yngve goes on to observe: >P.S I've listened to all the Happy CDs I've got today (but _VII_ which > one of my friends borrowed) and I must say I love the music. Maybe > _VI_ is my favorite right now. But maybe not tomorrow :) It may or may not be a sign of immunity to my morning coffee that I still read such commentaries, and initially wonder about the references to Happy's appar- ently underground albums "six" and "seven" :-). This is similar to gabriel's mask-wearing; at the time he was using a lot of costumes, masks, and makeup. He felt that the masks did not actually "mask" him or hide him, but rather allowed a trans- formation to occur that allowed him to say truths that he would not have been able to say otherwise. I'm pretty sure that this is what he's doing in both "Supper's Ready" and _Lamb..._, especially in the introductory paragraph of the story in the lamb..., the one that starts "keep your fingers out of my eyes." maybe i'm reading too much into this after absorbing too much french theory. but maybe not... :^> best, brni ---- Tracy Barber tlb@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us The Big Sky BBS (+1 614 864 1198) ======================================================================== Date: 01 Apr 1993 09:03:24 -0500 (EST) From: ACSSQMC@ubvmsb.cc.buffalo.edu Subject: Happy and Kate From: IN%"Julianne_Dunphy@qms1.life.uiuc.edu" "Julianne Dunphy" 31-MAR-1993 >Happy and Kate >Well, in the vein of Happy sounding like Kate and all that, >I thought I would put my $00.02 in. >I felt the initial similarity between the upper range of >Happy's voice and Kate's notable immediately, although >the more I listened, the more distinctive each of them >became in light of the other.
