If, like our Danish (I think) correspondent, the Friendl y Drelb who closed out the opening enumeration of the cast each week doesn't send you anywhere, perhaps ecto@walnetto.rutgers.edu could still be viable :-). Characteristically, I slept through all of Letterman last night, but the night before, there as no mention of Tori Amos among the scheduled guests for yesterday. (I was watching Tuesday in the first place, chiefly because Vickie had told me on Monday that she'd heard Tori _Might_ be on, but Monday was a rerun, and she wasn't on Tuesday either.) I'll try to stay awake tonight :-). Somehow, it feeds my ego to see one of my flights of fancy make additional users of the Eagle system snarf (or not, depending on the actual mass reaction) . If it doesn't confuse them first, maybe it will arouse some curiosity about our cause, and hopefully some interest in it. But in case it eventually gets shopworn, perhaps we should start looking toward the future, and think about preparing additional stuff to leave behind on the CRTs. The ECCHTO cover whereof I spake the other day, featuring Alfred E. Neumann in a ripoff (far more than just a knockoff) of the Warpaint cover art, is of course one possibil ity. (Vickie says she finds this idea scarier than any of Happy's monster pictures on the 1st4 covers.) The only other idea in this vein that I have this morning is for an EctoSports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, with supermodel LINDA HAPPYVANGELISTA on the cover, and a feature on Orel Gratification in the back of the book. However, like many other people around here I know, I am still watching and reading all my digests like a good little ectophile, don't you worry about that. I've noticed a small discrepancy in the lyric sheets for "Poetic Justice". I'd always thought that the lyric sheet version was correct : Get to the point you sappy wimps I haven't got a lot of time. ... but Meredith's signature has "I haven't got a lifetime" instead. 't wasn't one of the best mainly because i am overworked at the time... :( still thanks a lot!! a couple of things: a) Tori Amos *is* a witch. I bought the cd on monday, and i haven't stopped listening to it. in fact, i have a tori/warpaint tape that hasn't left my walkman. my favourite songs are 'precious things', 'crucify', 'china', and 'little earthquakes'. how can i escape from her now? :) b) i will agree with martin and meredith on the 'lifetime' instead of 'lot of time' in po-jo. i always sing 'lifetime', anyway, and my ears have parasites, remember? ;) c) i'll smash a preconception that happy sings 'boomdidiwanahihihi' on terra incognita. I submit that she sings 'coomdidiwanahihihi'. listen closely towards the end. d) meredith, what's the dirt behind the personal saga between annie lennox and dave stewart? inquiring minds want to know. that's all for now, and for the next week or so (unless i get a sudden urge to post til sunday-then i am off to san francisco). auf wiederposten :) angelos ------- 'and i hate and i hate and i hate elevator music' ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 23 Apr 92 18:37:35 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu Subject: miscellaneous seeing that boiled in lead, clannad and other celtodelic bands have gotten mention here, i might as well point you all in the direction of another of my faves in that vein: rare air. they are a canadian foursome mixing the celtic traditional with anything else that they can get their hands on. it ranges from the more traditional and spacy sounds of _hard to beat_ to a more general world beat with celtic influences on their latest, _space piper_. there is one other album, called _primeval_ which, being released between the other two, sounds sorta in the middle (not surprisingly). all three are on cd and are available from green linnet records and hopefully fine record stores near you. a funny tale about this band as well...long ago, i taped some show on npr that featured a bunch of performances from some canadian folkd festival. one of the bands was rare air, but i didn't know that at the time. i just knew that i liked their stuff alot. but i never knew who they were. after some time, i heard them on the radio and eventually got around to buying a cd of theirs. and lo! as the first strains of music of the first songs piped out of the speakers, i thought "gee, that bagpipe sounds familiar", and "gee, that flute sounds familiar". and then the third song on the cd was one of the ones i had from that tape from all those years ago. i just love musical revelations like that. in case anybody doesn't read gaffa, i forgot to mention that the tori show i was at was recorded by abc tv for their "in concert" series. i dunno when it will be broadcast, but i'm looking forward to it as the show was excel- lent. henry frayne sent me a copy of his newest project today. this is a mostly instrumental effort between him and brendan gamble (the guy who did drums with the moon seven times). very area/m7x-ish as you would expect, but he does go off into some pretty wild territory as well. very pretty and very nice. the package is also quite wonderful: hand-assembled booklet with gauzy pages and photos and the works. the title insert on the booklet is a piece of engraved metal (least it looks and feels that way). overall, a very 4ad-ish package. but supplies are limited! there are only 400 of these babies. i dunno how he is distributing them, but the booklet says that correspondence can be sent to either him or parasol records. as i recall, parasol is handling the release and distribution of the first moon seven times single, so i would recommend cntacting them: parasol 201 n.coler urbana, il 61801 217/384-4835 lynn canfield sings on one of the tracks. very pretty stuff here... also, i seem to recall that some folk were babbling about my bloody val- entine. if you like them, there is an american band doing similar things called velocity girl. they have a number of singles out on slumberland records which you might be able to find at any decent store that sells vinyl. i can't find my address book, so if any one is interested, let me know and i'll dig it up for you: slumberland mail orders stuff really cheap. going to find dinner now. yum. woj ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 23 Apr 92 19:27:26 -0400 From: gb10@gte.com (Gregory Bossert) Subject: the philly tapes please excuse me while i engage in a bit of dubious ethical reasoning... i have shipped the first load of philly concert tapes, and i have this request of those people will be receiving them (as listed below, but read this bit first ;) *please* do not duplicate these for someone else, unless s/he already owns (and i mean, has bought) warpaint, or better yet, *all* of Happy's albums... why? well, when i talked to Kevin before the concerts, he gave me his approval to record, but he also said that he and Happy were very concerned about people hearing and judging Happy based on recordings over which they have no control. this is an attitude i fully understand and respect -- this music is their life and livelihood, and i have no desire to steal it from them... so, listen to and enjoy the tapes -- the performances they contain are *wonderful* -- and make all your friends buy Happy's albums, so they too will be able to appreciate the live shows... ALSO, apologies again for the lack of the last quarter of the concert... next time, i'll get the whole thing, if it means watching the equipment instead of Happy (eh, that'll be difficult, too :) so, tapes have been mailed (first class, on 4/23/92) to: Vickie Mapes (could one of you chicago 'philes tell her?) mystery.person Mike Mendelson Steve Fagg Tracy Barber Doug Burks John Relph Barry Wong (Barry, yours will go out saturday -- i had to wait for photos...) i will hand deliver tapes to: woj (trade ya for albany... ;) Meredith Tarr if anyone else has requested copies or sent me money/tapes, please notify me a.s.a.p. is it live or is it footah? -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "there is thunder in our hearts" -- KTB ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 23 Apr 92 21:21:49 PDT From: barry@gnu.ai.mit.edu Hiya everybody I've got two questions: 1. Well, actually only the first tape of each show, as I haven't made my own backup of the second tapes yet. There is one thing I've noticed. Months ago I was wondering about the missing silence between "Phobos" and "Wrong Century" on "Warpaint", and Happy told us that there was no special reason for it. But now: in both shows "Phobos" continues into the next song (which is not "Wrong Century"), and they really take care that noone applauds in between by sheer volume. I'll second Greg's "dubious ethical reasoning". Make sure that any new Ectophiles-to-be hear the lifeless studio recordings before they are allowed to hear the magical energetic live recordings! :) :) Seriously, while my statement is in jest, I do fully agree with Greg. Make sure you have a dyed in the wool fan before you spread the tapes of the live shows, Philly or Albany. While on the subject, someone once raised a related question about the ethics of distributing the compilation tapes. If I were distributing copies of albums, I probably would agree that it shouldn't be done. However, I feel a compilation tape, especially in this group, is more likely to spur record sales for an artist rather than steal from them. While on the subject some more, the sixth volume of Vickie's compilation series has significant differences from the original. I will post the new list (with Vickie's comments) on Monday, along with the current status of the dubbing requests. Also any further requests for copies of the HGP and Ecto SiG tapes should go to me, as I am adding them to my list. Steve Fagg asked: What a shame!
