It is obvious that ecto is fast becoming _the_ place to turn to find out things you never knew before. (To make a long story longer, I just remembered something I read in the text for my undergrad math survey course, vintage Fall Quarter, 1969--to wit, a footnote exhorting the reader to be skeptical of any assertion that starts out with "it is obvious that....") It also seems to me that if Greg had been writing the inimitable roadside doggerel while the real Burma Shave was still in business, the odds are that they'd still be in business today. Can't have everything, I guess. :-) Speaking of things mathematical, I was taken with Angelos' proof that NS1 really is short for "HR." Equating 1 with itself was in the best trad- ition of several other things: the statement in the first UNIX manual I ever read that "a one-character regular expression is a regular expression that measures whatever the one-character regular expression measures," or words to that effect (now you know why I prefer IBM mainframes :-) ); the job control language statement in the old SPSS cataloged procedure at the University of Chicago, "//FT09F001 DD DDNAME=FT09F001;" and, of course, that wonderful little ditty by Laurie Anderson, "Let X Equal X." The whole thing made me deeply regret having been a D student in advanced algebra and trig a quarter-century ago, until I took another look at it and discovered, to my pleasant surprise, that I was actually able to follow it (sort of). I haven't felt that empowered since a couple of weekends ago, when I barely managed to catch a subway train that was just on the verge of pulling out after I had had to wait interminably for the train that was supposed to connect with it, and then something possess- ed me to run, not walk, between the two platforms. (Keep in mind that this was while the subways were still relatively free of river water--gives one a sense of history, does it not? :-) ) But seriously, folks: Between the phony flame wars, the song titles and lyrics in the vein of "More Paint" and "Stripes Weren't Made for Zebras," and I dunno whatdafuck else, we could have the makings of an ECCHTO parody zine right there. Would that all this had been thought of before April Fool's Day. Maybe next year? Now all we really need to figure out is how to use computer graphics to generate a 3/4 profile of Alfred E. Neumann running the tips of two fingers across his left cheek, the whole monochrome pic naturally toned blue-gray :-). I was amused by the pseudo-German text contributed by Chip; but in all fairness, I should probably point out that it has been around, with minor variations, since at last 1963, which is when another version was first brought to my attention. It remains as amusing as ever, though. Saturday, I got my first glimpse at Tori Amos' video of "Silent All These Years" on Channel 50's 2AM video hour, having serendipitously heard it announ- ced at the top of the hour. In an era of overblown production values, this video stands out by its sheer simplicity and straightforwardness. I look for- ward to future videos of hers, involving songs I happen to like better than this particular one. (I likewise look forward to the eventual rerun of _Street Beat_'s interview with Candy Dulfer, which would be fated to run concurrently on Channel 5 with TA's video on Channel 50, after the whole first half hour of the video show had only Casey Kasem to run concurrently with. But in the aggregate, I don't think I got such a bad deal getting to see what I saw :-). ) Meredith's replies to others' exegeses of assorted music reminded me of her account last week of Margie Adam's concert, in which she opined that coupling her performing with Tanita Tikaram's writing would yield a better end product that either could alone. I feel constrained to register a mild dissent from Meredith's view of Adam as a writer. While I am not intimately familiar with Adam's full discography, or familiar at all with her concert performances, she did come out with an album called _Songwriter_, or something similar, in the mid-'70's. I thought then, and still do, that the quality of writing on that album was quite good. While her lyrics weren't _quite_ the intellectual feast that we have come to expect from Happy _et al._, they were nonetheless quite pleasing, avoiding both the high concept that oversaturates mass-marketed music, and the polemicism that often turns up in the so-called Womens' Music. The tunes are likewise quite pleasing. If Adam's writing skills have deteriorated in the last 16 years or so, this is indeed cause for dismay. So Tori is going out Westwards after she plays the Northeast, huh? Good. I was hoping she'd play Northampton before Chicago, so I (or whomever else in the entourage) could be the one to give her a copy of Warpaint. ;> Not to steal any of Vickie's fire, but I think it'd be neat to do myself... The "German" thing you posted, Chip, is also a hoot. Never read stuff like that when you've just been dealing with a lot of real German theater. Elton sang a very emotional 'the show must go on'. d) lisa minneli sang 'we are the champions' and did an ok job by trying to capture some of freddie's stage antics and tones. major disappointment-total ridicule-golden throat award: roger daltrey and paul young. the first massacred 'i want it all' and the second 'radio gaga'. this was one tribute that was well worth it. angelos ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1992 06:06:09 EDT From: eperry@kean.ucs.mun.ca Subject: Happy b-day! Her new solo album "Diva" entered the UK chart at number one last week. It features the expected Annie Lennox vocal performances but with less interesting instrumental arrangements than the Eurythmics usually managed. > Do other Happy fans like Annie Lennox as much as we like Kate and Tori? Well, not as much as KaTe :-) but at least as much as Tori (I'm still at the "getting Into" stage with Ms. Amos). > /joel malman@bbn.com > P.S. I second Angelos' urgings to people to try to catch the Freddie Mecury tribute on TV. It was very well done, especially the second part (not exactly a metal head myself). I too wass disappointed at Paul Young's performance, but I thought Daltrey did OK. Liza Minelli was a real surprise to me, terrific. And where has Ian Hunter been hiding for the last ten years? Happy content? None, except I was wearing my Ecto T while watching the TV. Said T didn't bring the Monarchs any luck on Saturday though :-( Freddie's tribute drew almost exactly three times as big a crowd to Wembley too (72,000 as against 18,000)... -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers.
