Hi! Steve, uh, I know I'm not a native German speaker, but Klaus has been having problems with his e-mail lately. "Hoch" means high. "Lang" means long. That makes the interpretation even more interesting, doesn't it? ;> Mitch, glad to see you and your system haven't floated away. The comment about the Chicago river being the only one to leak from the bottom caused a rather spectacular snarf, congratulations. I have to check out Loreena McKennitt sometime. Her album isn't at the station- my guess is it got either stolen or trashed when it came in because it didn't fit the MDs musical taste... :P ====================================================================== |Meredith Tarr "Get to the point you sappy wimps| |Wesleyan University I haven't got a lifetime | |Middletown, CT Simplicity is beauty | |USA, Earth Are there poets less sublime?" | |mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Happy Rhodes | ====================================================================== ======================================================================== Date: 16 April 1992 10:49:07 CDT From: Subject: Did I shoot myself in the footah again? :-) Greg commented to me about my latest ecto food idea: > Ouch! Things has been pretty slowly 'round here lately, hasn't it? ;) I just acquired from the station the promo single CD of "Silent All These Years" (ack, every time I type the word "this" "thesis" comes out first :P)- no extra tracks, just the album version of that song, with a yummy picture of Tori on the cover. I figure it'll be worth something someday. :> I've also gotten as freebies the single of Tracy Chapman's "Bang Bang Bang", which is about as boring as anything from _Crossroads_ but I'm reserving judgement on the album until I can hear the whole thing; the new single from They Might Be Giants (haven't heard it yet); and a CD called _The Bells of St. Genevieve and other Baroque Delights_ featuring such musical luminaries as James Galway doing Bach and Pachelbel and that sort of thing. The Baroque period is my favorite period of classical music, so I'm psyched. Alas, if I were going to be within reach of the studio during the summer, I'd volunteer to take over the compiling of the HBP. But I don't think I'll be around after graduation. :( Doug, what was that you said about mailing tapes book rate? How many tapes have to be in the package before that rate applies? 11 days to Tori at the Iron Horse... :) :) :) ====================================================================== |Meredith Tarr "Get to the point you sappy wimps| |Wesleyan University I haven't got a lifetime | |Middletown, CT Simplicity is beauty | |USA, Earth Are there poets less sublime?" | |mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Happy Rhodes | ====================================================================== ======================================================================== Subject: Re: Stuff Date: Thu, 16 Apr 92 17:45:08 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu >I've also gotten as freebies the single of Tracy Chapman's "Bang Bang Bang", >which is about as boring as anything from _Crossroads_ but I'm reserving >judgement on the album until I can hear the whole thing; GACK! How _dare_ you! How can you honestly call gut-wrenching songs like "All That You Have Is Your Soul" or "This Time" or "Bridges" or [...] "boring"?!?!?!! These are every bit as powerful as the gutwrenching songs on _Tracy Chapman_. Heathen! I should add, at this point, that whilst initially disappointed in Melissa Etheridge's _Never Enough_, it's grown on me significantly. I still don't think that it's as good as _Brave And Crazy_, but it definitely has its moments (especially "2001", "Dance Without Sleeping", "Meet Me In the Back", and "The Letting Go.") >the new single from >They Might Be Giants (haven't heard it yet) By "new", I assume you're referring to "The Statue Got Me High"? Or have they released a second single? If the former, well, _that's_ a boring song. I was a bit let down when I first heard it, and that feeling never really changed. I didn't realize _how_ let down I was by it until I heard "Anna Ng" on the radio yesterday. Now _that's_ how TMBG should sound! Great parody, even better video. The day he writes 'More Paint', or 'Stripes weren't made for zebras' will be the day that Happy has become too popular for her own good. b) Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart- Rising above bedlam. I admit it. I am a Sinead-o-holic. But it turns out that the rest of the CD is also good. Latin rythms mixed with middle eastern vocals, songs in english, french, spanish, make it very interesting. My favorite song is actually a non Sinead song, 'Every man's an island', which reminds me of Eleftheria's 'Contrabando'. Amazing how a non-mediterranean can capture the feel so well. Lots of interesting lines too. Recommended. c) Diamanda Galas - The Singer. I wrote about this in .gaffa the day after I bought it. I was shocked by it. I even tried to sell it, but decided that $5 was a ripoff, and kept it. Well it turns out that I ended up liking it. Chilling, disturbing, angry, yet heartfelt. I cannot imagine anybody else singing like she does. She has an incredible range. She can sustain a very deep voice, but her screams are really haunting. She reminds me of a satanic bluesy Lene Lovich gone amok. And that's meant as a compliment. Next in my list are Loreena, and the Lou Reed box set (ouch!). Greg and Doug and I have been updating the FAQ, and as I was making some little changes, I noticed that it lists the cost of the ectozine as $8/year, which *was* true. >From now on however, it will be $10/year. Why? Well, becasue it will no longer mean just a subscription to the ectozine, it will mean "membership in the Happy Rhodes Fan Club" which includes the ectozine, of course, and also postcards and buttons, the ability to order Ecto Thsirts (the "ectozine fan club tshirt" to be printed at some point after the zine is up and running will only be available to fan club members. All future ecto T's may have that requirement, just to help me meet overhead costs). Anyway, I think it works out better for all :) I've sent a full set of prints from Joe's photos of the Philly show to H&K. They came out really well (in our humble opinion :) and we really hope they like them. I included (seperately wrapped :) for Kevin: An 8x10 of a good one of happy standing with her guitar and a 5x7 of one where she is bathed in pink light, with her arms wrapped around herself. for Happy: An 8x10 of a good one of kevin playing electric guitar ,and a 5x7 of a good one of him at the keyboards bathed in purple light (happy likes purple). Prints are available to anyone who likes, but hopefully i'll get a chance sometime in the future to scan them in so people can pick and choose. There are 20 "good ones" though, that I really think would please anyone. If you want copies, they're .43 each, so that's 8.60. So for $10 you can have a set of 4x6 prints (that's including shipping). (checks to Ecto PO Box, of course! :) Oof. It's been a busy and long week, and ecto's been kinda slow (thank god, it's enough i can do to *barely* keep track of it sometimes:) so I tihnk that's all my news for now:) Oh oh, nope, one more tiny bit of news: Dave and Reg Steiner will be joining us at the Northampton MA show (Tori Amos). It's turning into a regular ectophile occasion. jessica ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 16 Apr 92 23:54:03 EDT From: jessica@cs.rutgers.edu (jessica) Subject: *IMPORTANT* Announcement of change of address for ecto.
