Sergei's back. We are all back. Glad everybody liked the Philadelphia concert. Even understatement's back :-). About three weeks ago, Stuart Rosenberg's show on WBEZ featured a live performance and interview with a band whose name I made a specific mental note of at the time, but which I could not now remember if my life depended on it-- which probably guarantees that it will come back to me in a flash much later, precisely when it will be guaranteed to do me no good at all. I do recall, for all the good it will do, that their name was something slightly off the wall. But I digress. Anyway, in the interview that followed their set the lead singer (I'm not positive that's what she was, however) opined that she believed that Yma Sumac was really Amy Camus (which she pronounced like Albert the Existentialist) from New Jersey (clearly a mutation in this musical urban legend from the version that my parents once related to me, in which her name is pronounced like Tori's with a leading C, and she was alleged to be from Brooklyn), but that that was OK, since she (meaning Amy/Yma, not herself :-) ) was such an amazing singer. A testament to our favorite multioctival Peruvian's contin- uing charisma, if nothing else. The same show, and also the following week, Rosenberg played selections from Marta Sebestyten's new album, the name of which I have also forgotten after making a mental note of it at the time. As I listened to Sebestyen's selection the first week, I happened to be reading a letter in the March _Washington Journalism Review_ which quoted Elmer Davis: "Cowards did not found the republic and cowards will not preserve it." And this being the day after Happy's second concert, I thought: Could this be twisted to produce something like "Words founded the republic and words will preserve it" ? Several days earlier, I was listening to WZRD (flagship station of the Suspended in Gaffa radio network), as is my custom when in its reception area (which I usually am not), when they played a band called Screwdriver doing a cover of the song that June Tabor sang on the HGP tape. This version was interestingly different, to say the least. But it is clear from all these little bits of business that the kind of music that we on Ecto enjoy--or unreasonable facsimiles thereof, at the very least--are indeed diffusing at least a little of the way through the culture. Apropos SiG, I feel the irresistible impulse to fling in Vickie's face the great words of Peter and Kate: Don't give up. Personal to Albert: In the early years, aspirin was a trade name for the stuff that eventually became genericized. But it hopefully works just as well under any name when you're feeling fuzzy, blue and overhung after an unforget- table night of ecto-partying. Personal to Doug: Will you feel the same way years from now, when the Giants are in San Jose and the National League is in Denver? :-) Personal to Billie Holliday: Happy birthday. There's still time for y'all to get in on Greencorp's sale on Genuine Chrome tape, as Doug seems to have. (They profess to be one of the leading brands in Australia, but apparently are unheard of in Martin's area. Go figure.) You have to buy in multiples of 25, and the boxes &c. are sold separately, but (if I interpret the terms of the special offer correctly) 89 cents per type II c-100 is not a bad deal. call 800-972-0707 and ask for the "give me a break sale" brochure. You have to mention the sale when ordering to get the sale price, which is good until April 30. Earlier today I was shopping for something else at the main Rose Records store (supposedly the mecca for the hard to get title), and decided to look for items by Loreena McKennitt. They looked in their online data base, and discovered they don't even carry her. Have others of you had availability problems of this sort with Loreena, at least those of you who are south and west of the Maritimes? On the one hand, I want to say that it was worth the wait. On the other hand I want to wail and moan and gnash my teeth for missing out on this truly superb album for the last 3 years. It's really hard to compare to _Solace_; they're completely different. I'd definitely put them on the same pedestal, though. Actually, WBCN has a show on Sunday evenings from 7-10PM, called "Nocturnal Emissions" hosted by Oedipus. It's a pretty good show where they play all the music that you won't hear during their regular rotation. Sarah McLachlan was an in studio guest this past Sunday. I think that's the place that WBCN would play Warpaint, if at all. I used to work at 'BCN while I was still in school, and I've seen quite a lot of good music played on that show and it doesn't have to be the "mainstream alternative" (how's that for a label!) bands like the Cure, the Smiths or Concrete Blonde. There's an amusing review of the Sarah show in the Boston Globe today. The guy insists on comparing her in detail to Sinead O'Connor, one sentence after he's said that comparisons are dangerous. I don't think he enjoyed the show too much, but he's a journalist, what the hell does he know. ;) I asked for the half of the ticket in Philly that said HAPPY RHODES on it. And they gave it to me. Hah. Vickie, you're so right about live interaction on the radio. Whenever nobody calls me during my show I figure nobody is listening, which probably isn't true but how can I know... so then I play weird shit. Yesterday I gave out the request line number and said, If you don't want to be subject to my every sick and twisted musical whim, call me! Then I played The Ukrainians. :> Happy may play the Iron Horse??? Oh, cool...that would be wonderful. I hear the Iron Horse is trying to get Sarah for May or early June- she's listed on their "upcoming events" list. Anybody going to see Tori Amos there on the 27th? Let me know, I may need a ride. :) Off to class..did Sarah really have Medieval music on before she came out on stage? I'd love to find out what it was. I'm music director for my Medieval Latin class, so I have a tape in my bag full of selections from the Carmina Burana to play after we read through our translations. Medieval music is wonderful. If the other stuff I'm into didn't exist, that would be the only thing I listened to.
