Pure angel voices carry you away... > Karin Krog Just Holding On Freestyle Thanks to Angel Weaver (I'll get her on the net yet!) for sending me a compilation of this artist. I love nearly every song on this album. Now *she's* obscure! Angel's sending me more...I can't wait! The next wave of Collection tapes will have more Karin on them. > Jevetta Steele Calling You Bagdad Cafe [soundtrack] I got a promo of this sountrack months before the movie came out. I nearly wore out the cassette listening to the song over and over again. I bought the CD *just* for this song and wore _it_ out! I just had to play this song, so you get the cassette version. Hypnotic... > Carmel Bad Day The Drum Is Everything This song is *so* good. This is the first song by Carmel (McCourt) I ever played on my show. I wish I knew who the background singers are, but it doesn't say. Alas, she's an uneven artist but not enough to keep me from recommending her. Where is she now....? > Rickie Lee Jones Atlas Marker Flying Cowboys She didn't make it on the Voices tape so I had to fit her in somewhere. I'm not a big fan but I do think she's pretty cool. This song especially. > Mary Coughlin Lady in Green Tired and Emotional A *sad* song. It was so hard to pick songs from Mary because I have so many favorites. Not *one* person mentioned being impressed with her voice from the HGP :-(. I'll keep trying....she'll hit someone in the heart yet. :-) > Nina Hagen Ave Maria Michail, Michail [CD single] A wonderful (and really, very respectful!) version of this piece of music (somehow it doesn't seem right to call it a "song") and one of my favorites by Nina. > Throwing Muses [5] Amazing Grace [?] Well, what else fits after "Ave Maria?" Thanks to Sue in KC for this. > Mathilde Santing Think About Your Troubles Breast and Brow Now I know...a Nilsson cover! I *thought* it sounded familiar... > Sam Phillips Holding Onto the Earth The Indescribable Wow! I *hope* this is on here because it isn't on my copy. I rearranged things here and there and my copies are slightly different from the ones I gave to Doug. On my copy there's another Mathilde Santing song. Hmmm. > The Innocence Mission [20] Paper Dolls The Innocence Mission > Deux Filles [25] Fleur Dolls Silence and Wisdom > Sonoko The Balcony Scene L'Debutante These 3 songs fit together *SO* well!! I never put them together until I made this compilation. Now I have another favorite segue to work with. I played these on my Chicago show last week and expected to get all kinds of complaints but no one must have been listening. I always imagine that the hip super-duper alternative-types who listen to WZRD automatically turn off the radio when my show comes on. If not, sets like this will drive them to distraction. I mean, if The Innocence Mission doesn't do it, then dolls chattering to the music of piano and a music box will. If they're still around, with their mouths hanging open, scratching their heads wondering what the hell was *that*, then the sound of a Japanese girl reciting the scene from Romeo and Juliet, also accompainied by a piano and a music box, will definitely do the trick. I love to weird people out! > Virginia Astley A Summer Long Since Passed Hope in a Darkened Heart Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! This song was played on my very first Suspended in Gaffa. Another, more acoustic version, appears on Virginia's first album. I chose this one because it works so well with... > Kate Bush The Sensual World The Sensual World The segue could have been done better, but you'll hear why I like putting the two together. > Wendy Wall A Woman's Voice Wendy Wall I regret putting this song after Kate because, now that I've listened to this Collection again, I realize that it didn't quite work. Oh well. It's still a good song, just put in the wrong place. Lyrically though, it works just about anywhere. "You need us now..." in her and MHO. :-) > Sandy Denny Listen, Listen Best of For those who have never heard Sandy, I hope you like this introduction. It's one of my favorite songs. > A C Marias To Sleep One of Our Girls ... I forgot to list this singer's name: Angela Conway. Oh, for a duet between Julee Cruise and Angela....heaven, I'm in heaven. > Miranda Sex Garden [26] Gush Forth My Tears [12" remix] I still don't have this 12" but Sue in KC sent me this on tape. > Nona Hendryx Tears Skin Diver Ethereal w/ heartbeats... > Jane Siberry Map of the World Pt 1 No Borders Here It fit. Very well, I might add. Listen on *headphones* for a truly ethereal experience. > Collection - Darnell/Andrea Aux Aurores un Automne A Leroy Chloe St. Liphard sings here. That is, assuming the song is on the tape. My copy has another A.C. Marias song on it. This group wants to be the Dead Can Dance of France. They try, they don't make it, but I like them anyway. To my French-speaking Ectophile friends: what do the titles mean? This is the last one (so far, hehe) and it's the only "real" Suspended in Gaffa of all the Collection tapes. This actually aired and I don't think I edited anything out. It's really a trivial show, and not even one of my favorites, but the music is all good and I had lots of fun this night. Suspended in Gaffa 48-Kansas City (aired 28 Jan 1989) > The Catherines Here and Gone The Catherines tape > The Catherines The Tears of This The Catherines tape One of these days this group will put out an album. Till then, I only have 3 songs by them. The lead singer, Ala Mandelbaum, used to be in the Psychowelders. So far, the "highlight" of The Catherines career has been opening for The Innocence Mission in Kansas City. This night, Jan 28, '89, the group Scrawl opened for *them*. Ala was a guest on my show once and I let her pick a lot of the music. She *loves* Kate Bush, Lene Lovich and Mary Hopkin (live, Ala does a killer version of "Goodbye," the same song 10,000 Maniacs cover on the HGP.) > Rainbirds Fireworks (Don't Want to Miss That) Rainbirds I think this is the first song I ever played by Rainbirds (notice I took out the "The") because I loved the lyrics so much. Short story insert: Chris had gone to New York City on business and haunted the record stores, telling clerks "my girlfriend has a radio show blah blah blah" and, um, "challenged" them to come up with female artists we'd never heard of. "This?" "Got it" "This?" "Got it" This?" "Got it" "This?" "Got it"..... until finally....bingo! Chris brought me home 3 excellent records. Sarah McLachlan's _Touch_, Mary Kelley's _Greeting's Five_ and this Rainbirds CD. Yay for those NYC record store clerks!! > Cindy Lee Berryhill Steve on H Who's Gonna Save the World A *very* uneven artist, but quite amazing at times. She's a storyteller. > Siouxsie & the Banshees Tenant Kaleidoscope This was a request, I think. > Michelle Shocked When I Grow Up Short, Sharp, Shock This is a favorite song from an album full of favorites. I love the lyrics, love the music, love her voice, love her attitude. Oh, love this video too! > Janis Joplin Walk Right In Janis I have to admit, I don't play very much Janis Joplin. I don't know why, because I think she's fantastic! > Psychowelders Snakes and Ladders Psychowelders The quality of the tape isn't great, and it's not my favorite song, but it was a request and it's not bad, but they have much better songs than this. I like the band a lot better now than I did then. > Throwing Muses Colder House Tornado This is my favorite album by them. > Happy Rhodes Possessed Rhodes Vol I This sounds *terrible* because I had the Dolby on and wasn't paying attention because I had a visitor in the studio. Happy would *cringe* if she ever heard this show. > Monsoon Third Eye & Tikka TV Third Eye Loveit, loveit, loveit! What else can I say? This was the first Monsoon song I ever played on SiG, on my 3rd show, I think. > Danielle Dax Sleep Has No Property Dark Adapted Eye Just having fun... > Kate Bush Waking the Witch Hounds of Love Ditto... Short story insert: At this point in the show I play a promo for another show on KKFI called "Planet in my Kitchen" and the voices you hear are that of Kim and Richard. Richard was my boss and Chris worked with Kim. They were involved with KKFI long before the station went on the air and the Program Director put them in charge of the Alternative strip. Richard had to come up with shows to fill the airtime and was a bit frantic. He came to me and asked me if I wanted to do a show. HA! NO WAY! I was such a shy thing (no kidding!) that it was unthinkable, absolutely unthinkable!!! However, I did suggest to Richard that it would be so nice to have a show that featured interesting female vocalists without the "politics of feminism" interfering with the music and that he should try and find someone who'd be interested in doing such a show. He gave me a "look" that I'll never forget. Like who? he asked. Oh, people like Kate Bush and Jane Siberry and Virginia Astley and.... No no no, I mean, *who* would do the show? Well, find someone, that's your job. Oh, well, Vickie, you mean, someone with the *same* musical taste as you and someone with the *same* record collection as you and someone with the *same* resources as you? Uh, yeah....um...but *I* could *never* be on the radio, I've never even been inside a radio station, I've never even spoken into a microphone...it's impossible!! Look Vickie, no one is going to do it if you don't, so think about it. Well, needless to say, I thought about it, and the thought of being able to share music that I loved was enough to make me overcome my acute, painful shyness and do it. Maybe someday, if I ever feel masochistic, I'll release a tape of my very first show and people will hear just how quiet and painfully shy I was. By *this* show (#48) you'd never, ever guess that the words "Vickie" and "shy" had ever gone together in the same sentence. Anyway, the male voice in the promo is Richard, and it's all his fault :-) End short story insert > Andrew Sisters Bei Mir Bist Du Schon Best of More fun. I just love this song! I first heard it in the film (actually a documentary of sorts) called _Brother Can You Spare A Dime?_. > Creatures Dancing on Glass Feast Siouxsie & Budgie, having fun. > Trio Bulgarka Oi Yano Yanke The Forest Is Crying > Trio Bulgarka Az Ti Postulam Shareni Chergi The Forest Is Crying > Trio Bulgarka Oi Matze Matze The Forest Is Crying This had just come out and I told of them working with Kate. Then I got phone calls from people wondering if I knew when Kate's album would come out. HA! Those with good memories (and those who live in SFO) will know that it didn't come out until 9 months later. > The Catherines Angels on Your Pillow The Catherines tape With this, you have the sum total of The Catherines recorded output. This is my favorite song by them. It's not on the list, but I end out the show with The Andrews Sisters song "Beer Barrell Polka." My show was always the last show of the broadcast day and I had to do a "sign-off" required by the FCC. I never used the offical music the PD insisted on, which was an old, instrumental version of "Route 66," which, for some unknown reason, was the station's theme song (Kansas City isn't even *on* Route 66!) We "alternatives" used a version by Depeche Mode for a while, until the PD found out about it and erased the tape! Boo Hoo, it was *so* cool, and rare too. Out of spite :-) we still didn't use the official version, instead, we just used music we liked. I always used a different song every week. I knew the PD never, ever listened to the show because not once did he ever complain to me about it. All in all, a fun show, if a bit brain-damaged here and there, especially at the beginning (How about that?!) It's very weird. I can remember nearly all of my live Kansas City shows and what they were like and what I played on them just by their number (18? yeah, that was my first live show--before that they were on tape because the on-air studio wasn't finished yet...19? yes, that was when I discovered Enya and built an entire "ethereal" show around her...45? my last Sunday show before moving to Saturday nights, I was sad to lose all the listeners I'd built up over the months...89 & 90? Lots of fun, I did a 2-part "Critter" show... 104? one of my favorites, an "Around the World" International show...116? I interviewed Karen Peris by telephone on that one...117? probably by very favorite, an "Around the Universe" show...118? A 6-hour SiG "Marathon") and yet, I don't number or even dub them anymore (though, of course, I still keep playlists.) Moving away and going back to tape really took nearly all of the fun out of it. There's just something about being live that's really special. A lot of it has to do with the adrenaline pumping *hard*, but best of all is getting phone calls from listeners who call up and say "Wow! What's that? I never heard that before! That's great!!" and "Thanks for playing (insert interesting female artist here) because I've been a fan for years and I've never heard them on the radio before" and "You know, I was listening for over an hour before I realized that I was only hearing female voices. Cool!" and "Thanks! I listen to your show every week." I can't even begin to tell you how much I *miss* that kind of support and interaction with the listeners. Even *one* phone call like that really made my night. So, if you're listening to some tiny little station and you hear something really cool, call the programmer. Maybe they won't answer the phone, or maybe they'll be in a bad mood, or maybe they can't talk because they have to cue up the next record, but maybe, just maybe, you'll get someone like me (or Kiri or Meredith) who *really* appreciates the feedback. Some DJs don't care (some DJs are stupid) and some DJs have no input at all into what they play, but the ones who do want to know that someone "out there" cares. I started getting burned out on SiG when the "fun" was suddenly taken out of it. I've been trying to figure out a way to balance my love of the music, plus the thrill and privilege of being able to share music with people, with the "it's not fun anymore" aspect ever since. These Collection tapes may be a step in the right direction. They were *fun* to put together! So much so that even I was amazed. I'm just itching to make more of them because there were so many artists and songs I left out. I'll wait, because I don't want to overburden Doug, who's been such a sweetie about all this. The point is that these tapes are something I *want* to do. Unlike SiG, which for months has been an "Oh lord, I have to tape my shows, ugh!" kind-of-thing. Weird...don't ask me to explain because I have no idea why it's like that. Oh well, enough of this....good night, sleep tight... I think the following bits of interview with Tori Amos might shed some light on the question why the Tori from Y Kant Tori Read is so different from the one we know from her album Little Earthquakes. I must warn you that her words have been translated to Dutch and back. The following quotes are from a magazine called the Hitkrant, dated February 29, 1992. "My story is one of lost dignity. I learned to play the piano as a kid. I was a "miracle-child" who regularly added lustre to parties in Washington D.C., where my father was a preacher. I was hated in school. The others called me a freak. They where right. Looking back to my childhood, I must admit that I was the ideal girl in the eyes of the adults, but in reality I was less perfect than everybody expected. In our family, lots of things happened just for show. My mother was only worried about style and prestige. And my father, the spitting image of James Dean, originally had no intention to become a clergyman. For money or a good reputation, people often put on a mask. Worst of all was my grandmother. I could never get along with her, even though everybody called her a saint. Once she wrote me a letter, in which she humiliated me and dented my self-confidence so much, that even the most severe punishment wouldn't be sufficient to pay for my "sins"... Girls should be virgins on their wedding day. I was acting against God's will and would never go to heaven. I wasn't worthy of the love of my family. I had an argument with my grandmother when I was six years old. She cursed and bewitched me then. Her intentions may not have been bad, but she was a monster." About her piano-training at the Peabody Institute of Baltimore (she received a scholarship as a kid): "It concerned a classical training, but meanwhile I had discovered The Beatles, The Doors and Jimmy Hendrix. When I was eleven, I was expelled from school, because I didn't live up to the standards. I didn't care, because with the basic knowledge I had, I was able to make my first composition. The song was about my friend of that time. He often dealt out blows, but I loved him anyway. In love I was often disillusioned. I always picked out the wrong boys. My teens were an emotional depth. I played Gerschwin's music in small bars and spend a lot of my time with homosexuals. They where the only ones to understand me. Little by little I regained my self- confidence. I talked to wise people with a lot of experience in life. I only called in professional help when I was in danger of running of the line psychically. Around my twenty-third year, I was stuffed with sexual guilt. Only when I had dealt with my religious past, I was able to find peace with myself." The following quotes are from a Dutch newspaper, the Telegraaf, dated March 11, 1992. About her time with the band Y Kant Tori Read: "Everybody does something stupid once in his life. Well, I've been a rock-chick once." About Little Earthquakes: "I didn't make the album to have success, or to become famous. I proved that to myself with that other album. Thanks to this album, I've learned to express myself; just pure expression. Because I needed it. I had to find the real person in me, and not the machine." This one's again about her time at the Peabody Institute: "I did have the phrasing, but not the discipline to become one [a concert pianist]. I was a little kid amongst eighteen year old students! Then you grow up fast..." About when she was twenty-three: "I denied myself to play the piano for a few years then, as a kind of mourning process, and talked a lot, both professionally and with friends. I'm actually grateful that it took me so long to surface, because I was only ready to make this album [Little Earthquakes] now." -- Sarah McLachlan's Solace is still growing on me. When I listened to it again after I'd sent my previous message, suddenly the song Home jumped at me. This is a great song! (What a pity that the title is misspelled as Hom on the back of my CD booklet...) I'll have to add it to my list of favourites, somewhere near the top. I believe that Vickie mentioned that Sarah likes Peter Gabriel's music. IMHO, Peter's influence is very obvious in the song Home (and perhaps in Into The Fire). Welcome back Chip! Some songs are just majestic live. 'Black' (a song about corporate greed), 'Into the fire' (with a nice sampled intro, a 'Go Sarah go Sarah' background vocal), 'Steaming' (with LOTS of samples ranging from Boston to C+C music factory, 'Into the groove', 'Vogue', etc which had us all rolling in laughter), and a beautiful 'Vox'. The set list was slightly different (no Talk Talk covers), but Talk Talk were played after the end of the concert. We waited both inside and outside of the theater, Greg and jessica talked to FNX morning guy Tai about Happy (only to find out that he couldn't do anything) a couple of set lists found their way into ecto hands, jessica actually did some roadie work :) holding the door, waited by the WRONG bus (turned out it was the WGBH bus that did the broadcast) until we saw another bus coming. Then we saw Sarah come out holding flowers and stuff. She said, 'Let me put this stuff into the bus, and I'll be back', we giggled knowing that she had said the same thing to V'n'C, and indeed she came back. We got her to sign some solace posters we got from the lobby walls (they had some really neat blue posters that disappeared VERY fast), and LOTS of CD's. She looked very happy to be there, and was very talkative. We told her that "Warpaint" was an official release, and she could listen to it (her contract states she is not allowed to listen to anything that has not been released). She remembered V'n'C and Happy, that was nice! Then we asked her about future dates, and she said she might be back in Boston in July. She will be going to Europe, Canada and play some more dates in the US. I will try to see her again in San Francisco on April 30th. How can one buy tickets for clubs there? Kevin sent 3 CDs to WBCN in boston, and 'BCN expressed interest for their "two alternative shows" (probably at 3am monday morning -- anyone out there actually listen to 'BCN anymore?) there is some chance of a show at the iron horse in north hampton, mass. around june 25th... this is the club where i first met Happy and Kevin, after a stunning Mouth Music show, and it would be a perfect venue for them... :) (typing with fingers crossed) he spoke with jessica a bit as well... but i will let her report on that... more details as they arise! more footahs as they, er, footah! -greg -- gb10@gte.com -- "i win" -- HR ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr. There is a README file explaining what is where. Feel free to send me (or leave in the incoming directory, just let me know) things you'd like to have added. -- jessica (jessica@athos.rutgers.edu)
