I can add a little to this story.... I have the original of this song... wow. Even the original incarnation on scratchy vinyl has real power - the tune is hypnotic and the lyrics are clever and blue, blue, blue... According to the liner notes, over 200 suicides in the 40's were attributed to this song... people had the lyrics included in farewell notes etc... The BBC banned it from airplay at the time... this ban wasn't lifted until the late 1970's, I believe. Anyhow, it's 5:30am ... I'm off to ecto for a short time (ie sleep)... I have been sitting back enjoying all of the great posts about the Happy concerts and European 'meety'. They have all been wonderful and I have laughed out loud at some of the stories. I think my dogs believe I'm cracked - "There she goes again! laughing at that box on her desk!" Thanks folks! Vickie, I was glad to read that Sarah enjoyed Newfoundland (it really is a great place!) and even happier to read that you got your Happy tape to her. Hey Geoff! Are you going to tell everyone that you are on the mend and can almost touch your toes again without screaming in pain? :) Vickie chanted: > ************************ B - E - T - H ******************************* > (Gimme a "B" gimme a "E"....) Ok, Ok... :) I'll do my best to blow the dust off some old University of Guelph memories of Jane Siberry for you. We are talking about the late 70's when she still had *very* long straight hair and was very quiet. I met her through a very good friend (who I've sent a Happy sampler to, btw). The friend and I always went to hear Jane whenever she played locally. The best memories are of her playing at a little *tiny* coffee shop called The Cardin Street Cafe. I'd be surprised if 30 people could fit in the place. Bet you folks would be shocked to hear the type of music that she played back then - just Jane and her guitar - very folky. There isn't much I can tell you because I didn't get to know her well. [Did I just hear a sigh of relief from the Siberry abode in Toronto?] The few times that we did speak she was extremely quiet and seemed terribly shy. Even so she was pleasant and smiled a lot. I do remember that she talked *so* quietly between songs that one had to strain to hear what she said and she wouldn't look at the crowd. Even then her singing voice was amazing and her lyrics superb! (but this is probably no surprise to you Siberry fans! :) ) When I last spoke to the buddy who introduced us, she said that she had lost touch with Jane when we all left Guelph. There wasn't much talk of her until her second album came out and rumour had it that before release of that album, she was doing a lot of waitressing in an effort to make ends meet. She has played in St. John's a couple of times (usually when I'm in the field wrestling seals in the fog) and loves it here. People who spoke with her when she was last here ranted and raved about what a nice person she is so the fame (?) hasn't changed her much. If I think of anything else I'll let you know... The deadlines are quickly approaching and since Mitch won't write my thesis for me [ :) ] I'll have to return to my lurker status. Before I sign off - I lent _Warpaint_ to another buddy and she called to ask if there was anything else out by Happy. She loves her! I'll be passing the AG address on to her. Well, back to the writing, Beth ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 5 Apr 1992 14:57:44 -0400 From: mal@bucrsb.bu.edu Subject: Hi! :) Hello all you Happy folks!! Thanks for such a great welcome! I read the FAQ and now I know a little bit more about Happy. Now all I need is to hear some music! (Meth, I'll take you up on your offer. I'll send you details.) From what I can tell from reading the FAQ I think that I can enjoy her music. It is quite ironic that she had such an unhappy time growing up but everyone called her Happy. I guess they didn't know. Have any Happy fans seen any of her albums in the Boston/Cambridge area? I've looked at Tower Records, HMV, and Newbury Comics and found nothing. The story Meth told you was true. I haven't heard from her in almost 8 years and I was totally shocked when I saw her name flash on my screen. I knew it had to be her and now we're back in touch! [Tired Yawn ...] Sorry about that, folks. I had a very busy day, Friday, doing an awful lot of running around, climbing stairs, etc. Currently, my legs are feeling a little reproachful... Anyway, what happened was that I met up with Court the Cat in London. Now, what we had planned to do was visit Highgate Cemetary (The Cat is into Cemetaries, you know), so we had arrange to meet at Archway under- ground station, which is closest to Highgate C. But, when I arrived (a little late), she said she had a surprise: Tori Amos was playing that night at The Royalty Theatre! I was torn, because even if we could get some tickets, I wouldn't be able to stay for the whole performance because I had to catch the last train back to Canterbury. Still ... we went for it. We raced across the Underground, found the theatre, and found they had 3 returns. We snaffled two (which we next to each other!). Then we sort of meandered around London for awhile. We visited the London Dungeon (macabre, but great fun - and very interesting!), Forbidden Planet, Tower Records, Virgin Megastore ... My memories of the day are mostly composed of Underground stations - we must have used it about 13-14 times during the day (which is why my legs are hurting - all those stairs and escalators!). Anyway, after a brief stop at the hotel where Court was staying (where she introduced me to Loreena McKennit (sp?), whom I *really* want to get hold of - as it were :), and eating out with Court and her Australian roommates, Court and I made our way to The Royalty Theatre. We had managed to miss the opening support act, and had arrived during an intermission. We found our places (at the back of the dress circle - the "nosebleed section", as Court put it :) - but the view wasn't that bad). The performance consisted of Tori playing a baby-grand piano and some subtle lighting effects - and that is it. No backing tapes, nothing. It was actually very effective. I only managed to stay for 45 minutes - but that was 6 or 7 tracks, anyway. She didn't say much between tracks, apart from just before "Silent All These Years", when she said that some place in Virginia (whose name I didn't catch) were refusing to play it, because it was "just so awful"! But also, that her grandmother came from Virginia ("The one I didn't like very much"), so that made perfect sense! She also said that she wrote "Me And A Gun" after watching "Thelma and Louise", and she sings it to herself all the time, because she feels she has to. And that tonight, she sings it for a 14-year-old Irish girl. No doubt Court will tell you more of what happened when she gets back on Ecto. Even though I couldn't stay for the whole performance, I took consolation in the fact that I can almost guarantee that I was the *only* person in London wearing an Ecto T-Shirt :-). Messages from Court (some of which I've probably forgotten). She is having a great time at the moment, and is feeling OK (she's recently had glandular fever, and even more recently had a cold). To Chip: "Save the last swing for me!" (I assume that you know what she means, 'coz I don't :). To Albert: Tori was as good as you said she was. She wants to say special hello's to Vickie and kIrI. Hmm, I'd treat this as an addition to Doug Burks summary because he did such a good job describing everything. So, here we go! :) Arrive at jessica's apartment, vickie, doug and jessica are there. They fill me in on what the QE2 concert was like, sure wish I had been there. A few minutes later, Dave Steiner and Simon Cooper arrive. Jessica finally talks simon into putting on one of the ecto shirts, but he's alittle dismayed that he doesn't have a pocket like vickie's does. There's some more conversation about the QE2 concert, then we notice the time, and start making plans to leave without the ecto mobile, but in the midst of our preparations the ecto mobile arrives! :) As the ectophiles pile out of the ecto mobile and into jessica's apartment, greetings are said by all, a few pictures are taken and such. Oh, thought one of funiest things to happen while there, to watch with amazement as greg walked into jessica's sliding glass door! :) (Sorry greg, but your stunned look was priceless! :) hehe) Hmm, let's see, oh we all signed vickie's two shirts, I thought Happy's signature was kinda cute(It was a picture of Happy, and she put down "me" and drew an arrow to the picture) We marveled at the ecto mobile for a bit, greg filled us in on the various looks they recieved on their trek here, and then we were off. Hmmm, not much happened on the way to the concert. Observing some of the reactions people had to the ecto mobile was amusing. It was just something you had to see. Hmmm, Doug already wrote about the ecto mobile needing the WXPN station and when we almost lost the ecto mobile in philly. Hmmmm, we arrive at the restaurant finally, after seeing simon waving his hands on a street corner and after finally finding a parking space. Opps, almost forgot, also putting like $3.00 worth of quarters into the meter. At the restaurant, we meet up with the other ectophiles, again greetings are said by all. We manage to corner off a section of the restaurant. We pile up in small groups to go and get food, nothing interesting to note there, hmm wait, almost forgot, joe waiting for his hamburger, which was suppose to be medium rare, but seemed to be taking forever, he was like the first one up there and finally returned with his food after everyone else had already returned. Hmm, externally, the hamburger was like burned, but internally, it was still like raw, or very red, looked like joe was performing brain surgery on it. Oh, hey I'm surprised no one made any mention of the trek to find the bathroom. Jessica thought simon and I were lying when we explained the torturous route to get there. Now, would I lie, jessica? :) hehe Oh, hey Doug, was that women you were wondering about the one, sitting behind you and next to the window? If so, she was like waiting for us to be finished with our food. She came in before you guys came back with your food, simon and I thought that she was lost or something, and inquired as to what she was searching for. Food she replied, we informed her that the food was at the other end of the building, but she replied she didn't want to wait and besides you had to pay to get that food, she was just looking for something anyone left. So, she just sat and waited I guess. It was amazing, to see various people walk into our section and stop dead in their tracks, and quickly walk out. What did we look that unusual? :) Not everyone was turned away however, I do remember some old guys sitting down near Bob Brown, putting their hats and coats down and leaving to get food I guess, but later when I looked, they were gone. I thought greg filling out one of those customer service cards was kinda funny, since he filled in all the age groups, since we did cover all the age groups on the card! :) In small groups, we started leaving for the concert, vickie stayed behind to wait for her friends, I think one of them was Angel? Well, then the group I tagged along with Jessica, Dave, Simon and Joe made our way to the concert, but not before we had to put more change in the meter. It was like feeding a slot machine, quarter after quarter, turning the dial, with no payoff. On the way, we ran into woj and meredith heading back because they forgot if it was 3 blocks down and 3 blocks over. I think jessica said it was 4 blocks down and 2 blocks over, oh it was something like that I thinkwe replied, it's in the general area. :) I think it finally worked out to be 4 blocks down and 5 blocks over. Hmmm, we passed by some building which had a sign that it was the birthplace of ENIAC. Well, I'll be, you learn something everyday :) Upon arriving at the street address, we followed jessica to like this museum entrance, we got there, and there was some kinda party or something happening there. At first the guy at the front thought we were there for like a tour of the museum, but after we explained we were here for a concert in that building, he said yeah it was here, but we couldn't come in there, because their party or whatever was still going on. Now, here's like the part that had me stunned, people are coming out of there, one of guys' sees jessica, goes up to her, gives her his like id or whatever it was to get in and says "here jess go for it" Jessica goes in and is not seen by us again. After awhile, Stephen comes to tell us the entrance is like on the other side of the building, we say were waiting for jessica, he says, yeah, she's inside. Okay, walk around to the entrance, and whenever the doors open up we can like see jessica saying come in come in, meanwhile the guy at the door is saying, no, you can't come in yet. Okay, so wait outside in the cold, the wind blowing makes it feel even colder. Hmmm, eventually I hear some of Happy's music playin, is it coming from inside? No. Hmm, not inside, can only mean one thing, I shout "Well, we know vickie's here now" :) A pretty good size line has been forming now out here. The door's finally open up and we make a mad charge to get in, Luckily jessica had reserved the 4th and 5th rows for us. The first 3 rows had been reserved for people who had donated money or something I believe? We all get our seats, greg is setting up his equipment, some of us are laughing at the sign on the mike. (Jessica has a good picture of it while Happy is singing) I go get myself one of Happy's T-shirts, it's nice, of course I'm going to get one, it's to support Happy! A few of us were asked, where could they get one of those nice fuzzy blue t-shirts, instead of the white ones. :) Unfortunately, I don't think all the ecto members got to sit together, I think some came late and had to sit elsewhere. Okay, members of the band come out, Martha, kellye, Kevin and Ray, and immediately some of those at the QE2 concert scream out "We love you Ray!" (For a explanation, ask one of those who went to QE2) Of course to balance it out and not leave kevin left out, that was the "we love you too Kevin" :) Okay, then Happy comes out, there's a big ovation for her, she says a few opening remarks like "I'm very *pause* Happy to be here tonight" :) Okay, then she starts singing, The concert was awesome, spectacular, super, etc. I could go on, but I think you get the point. Sort of hard to describe, it was my first concert, so don't know how to describe a concert :) It was great being so close to Happy, to see her movements with each song, to hear her music actually come out of her. The sound wasn't too bad, considering the place was like a auditorium. Even during some songs, I was like, gee this sounds great, almost sounds like it's coming from right next to me :) It was funny after the first set when she put that sign back up on her mic. Oh gee, almost forgot, I did take one picture of Happy during the first concert, unfortunately, the dam flash went off!!!!! ^*&#$^^@^#@$^^%@# Okay, try to turn it off, DAM, I can't get this dam flash to stay off. When the flash went off, I was so embarrassed, I just like ducked down into my seat. (Oh, that should've been during her first set, not first concert) I thought like everyone was like looking at me, who was that idiot with a flash. One thing I will say, happy sure doesn't want her picture taken, she was like always putting the mic in front of her and any camera. :) The introductions of the band were cool, again when she introduced Ray, there were the "We love you Ray"'s :) I think when she got to Kevin, it was, "I really don't know who this is, this guy just followed us in" :) hehe Hmmm, the only thing else you might add to tell Kevn, vickie, is he might want to reorient his stuff, so we don't see like the little lights and stuff. I didn't realize what was distracting towards Kevin's end, until simon mentioned it, their were some lights on Kevin's board that had like a rythmic pattern, or as simon put it, like a heartbeat. It was just flashing like xx flashes/minute. Hmmm, I don't think there's anything else to note except to say the concert was awesome! :) The party after the concert was alot of fun too! :) Actually got to meet and talk to Happy, Kevin and other members of the band. Hmmm, thought service at the hotel was kinda amusing, looked like they weren't serving any of us with the ecto shirts on. :) It was funny, even some of the band, were saying, hey you have better shirts then we do, and you've even got name tags too! :) hehe Some smart people like woj and a few others found a soda machine and just bought drinks back, rather then wait for the waitress. Jessica and a few others went to the bar directly to get a couple of beers. Meanwhile, Happy, Kevin and members of the band were just mingling around the tables. Eventually Happy sat at our table, and she's like okay guys, when do we hit the bank? :) hehe The first question to her I think was, "What's your shoe size?" :) Asked by Stephen Golden I believe? It was so cool to actually shake her hand, was like dumbfounded for a moment, actually shaking Happy's hand, so happy :) Hmm, funny, I thought she was alittle bit taller :) Meanwhile, most of the ecto people were keeping themselves busy with questions to happy and kevin, etc or with conversation just among the table. Some enterprising table even went and made a table sculpture from the things on the table, like cups, forks, spoons, plates, etc. Now those people sure must do that alot :) It was funny waiting to see someone bump into the table, or see the waitresses face. I wanted to get a picture with Happy then, but no one else had been asking, and I knew how camera shy happy was, so I didn't :( I thought it was like a press party and there would be lots of people taking pictures, and then would be my chance. Really wanted a picture with happy too :( Hmm, let's see eventually waitress did get to our table, but only took orders for like a third of table. Let's see jess, dave, simon and joe ordered tea, when jess came back for the tea, her like little teapot wasn't as full as the others, and she thought simon or I had stolen her water :) hehehehe Turns out, her teapot had sprung a leak :) The waitress eventually got to the rest of us at the table, after asking "Oh, did you want something" Should've either went to the bar directly or went to the soda machine, I forget who ordered a soda, which like was mostly ice and grossly over charged. Hmmm, almost forgot, while at the table, I asked jessica about the guy who gave her his pass/id or whatever to get in, and she swears she doesn't know who he was, just some guy who gave her his pass or id to get in, even knew her name. It always amazes me the things that happen to jess! :) hehehe As a bunch of us were talking with Kevin, I figured, it would be a good time to get his shoe size. Rather then just asking him, figured would try to guess, so I was like putting my own shoe like right next to his, I don't even know if he knew what I was doing. Meanwhile greg is like laughing, I'm trying to line up our shoes perfectly, kevin keeps talking. I must've been right in front of him, getting my sneaker closer and closer to his shoes. I thought I got it finally, but as a check we asked him, and it was an amazing 12??? Hmmm, after wards, we wanted Happy to the EctoMobile. And see it she did, I think greg has some pictures of her reactions? A picture would describe it so much better! :) Well, that's about it, sorry about all those little incidents, but those are the ones that stand out in my head :) See you all laters! I wish she had opened for Sarah because I would really like to see her live, plus it would have been much better than the boring folkies who opened for Sarah. Thanks Martin for the additional info about Gloomy Sunday. (What a thread: Songs to Commit Suicide To. We actually know of someone who committed suicide while listening to The Ninth Wave. Quite a good choice if I might be so cold.....) Thanks Beth for the Jane stories. Good luck on your thesis. btw, if I didn't say this...CONGRATULATIONS on your fellowship. Give us details when you have a few minutes. Does this mean you're moving to the UK? Mitch, thanks for filling the gaps in my memory about the Laura Nyro songs. Especially "Eli's Coming" which was my all-time favorite 3DN song. Meredith, thanks for the Matra info, but I appreciated the *Marta* info so much more...pfflub. Hey folks, get those poll picks to woj so we can get moving on a sampler tape. Now I'm confused about who's going to put together the tape. I volunteer, but woj seems pretty keen on doing it. Wanna flip a coin, woj? Is anyone interested in a dub of Tori Amos's 1st album? I won't make this offer in gaffa, but Ectophiles are welcome to it. Warning: 1) the album is warped. It was the last album in the WXYZ LP box and just got "leaned on" by the other albums. It still plays, but the sound is weird on a few tracks, and our needle cartridge rubs against the record at many points. This is just for fervent fans who can't find a copy and just *have* to know what it sounds like. 2) the album is warped :-) meaning that it's *awful*. Believe me, I'm not, as is usually the case with me, offering this because I recommend it. I hate it. Now that I'm completely certain that it *is* Tori Amos, the differences between _Y Kant Tori Read_ and _Little Earthquakes_ is still unbelieveable. It's the difference between night and day, between desert and seashore, between Rhode Island and Texas, between amoebas and elephants. None of those work really because all those are good things. Hmmm...the difference between Paula Abdul and Kate Bush?? the difference between Milli Vanilli and Bach?? the difference between Hitler and Mother Theresa?? Ok, ok, I'll quit. At least that should tell you how highly I regard Little Earthquakes (a lot!) in comparison. Actually, there are bits here and there on the 1st album I like and those bits point to the Tori Amos we all know and love, but they are mere specks in the whole. Picture someone throwing a bag of diamonds into the toilet, then picture the sewer. Muck, except for every now and then you get a glimpse of a diamond bobbing to the surface before disappearing in back into the muck. Ok, ok, I really will quit. But at least, don't send me a really good tape for it. It's not worth it. Send a cheapo normal bias tape. All the usual blah blah applies: Send a tape with a mailer & postage to: Vickie Mapes 1627 W. Farwell, #2N Chicago, IL 60626 Better hurry, before I find some unsuspecting Tori Amos fan and sell this album for $150.00 :-) JUST KIDDING!! Vickie ======================================================================== From: katefans@chinet.chi.il.us (Chris n Vickie) Subject: Tori *is* coming to Chicago Date: Sun, 5 Apr 92 21:06:27 CDT Mike, Tori is coming to Schubas the end of April. Melissa Caldwell posted tour itineary in gaffa, that's where I saw it. Chris and I will definitely go. We'll keep in touch about it. I don't know if Schubas sells tickets in advance or not...if so, it might be a good idea to buy them in advance. Schubas seems very small for Tori. Weird, but I guess the dates were set before all the hoopla started. I'm not a mean person, but I can't help but wonder how she'd react if I brought the y Kant Tori Read album for her to sign. I won't, really, that's just too cruel. I will give her a Warpaint though...
