Wow! Well, oh my goodness....um, well, oh....*WOW*!! Chris and I went to see Sarah this past eveninand I'm still in somewhat of a daze. Everyone who's every said this was absolutely right on the mark: She is an *amazing* performer! The concert was sold out (at the Park West) and I was the first person at the door. I brought my trusty boom box and played Sarah for the folks waiting in line behind me, some of whom had never heard anything other than "Into the Fire." This was a WXRT "Budg show so the tickets were only $6.00. As soon as the dorrs opened I raced down to the front and was pleased to see that the Part West had it's usual arrangement. Tables and chairs were pushed right up to the front of the stage, so I took the prime spot and it was probably about 6-7 feet away from her when she took the stage. I love the Park West because it's nice, clean, has a great sound system and is almost always general admission. We've seen Jane Siberry, Julee Cruise and the Bulgarian Chorus there, among others. I sat in the same spot I did for Jane and Julee. It's a lot of fun being that close to people you adore! I saved seats for Mike Mendelson and his friend, and Chris, who all came in later. I think Mike was a bit weirded out at first being so close but I think he came to like it (eh, Mike?) after a while. I wrote down the songs as she performed them (tried to get a set list but the roadies grabbed them up before anyone could get to them) and there were 2 songs I couldn't remember the name of. I wrote down snatches of lyrics for them and as soon as I listen to Solace I'll know what they are, but for right now, here's what I have: Drawn to the Rythm Back Door Man ? "Look at the child...dream in his eyes" Lost Shelter Black Out of the Shadows Ben's Song I Will Not Forget You ? "Terms of endearment" Into the Fire Steaming 1st encore Got to Give it Up (cover of a Talk-Talk song) Steaming (reprise) 2nd encore Gloomy Sunday (cover of a Billie Holiday song) It's hard to pick out highlights because everything was so wonderful, but especially nice were Black (weirder and wilder than on the record, which is pretty darn weird and wild) and Ben's Song (she was alone on stage, at the keyboard, with a lamp turned on beside her. The audience was very still and quiet and gave her a roaring ovation after the song finished. She was quite suprised and moved by the response) and Steaming (a perfect pick for the end of the show...the entire band had a great time just jamming like crazy and the audience was full of people screaming and clapping throughout the song) and Gloomy Sunday (Sarah said that she loved this "most depressing song in the universe" because "the more depressing a song is, the more I love to sing it." She was alone on stage playing acoustic guitar during this song and it was amazingly beautiful) She said a couple of times that she wasn't even sure that anyone would show up. I believe her, because it was very obvious that she was very suprised (and, yes, again...moved) by the response of the audience. When people clapped and cheered at the beginnings of her early songs, she broke out in huge smiles and shook her head slightly in astonishment. I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish...I'd taped the concert. I really, really, really, really do. I didn't even think of it. Boo Hoo!! The band was great! I didn't get the names of the band members, but I wish I had, they were all *so* good! Sarah's voice is wonderful on record, but live it's astonishingly clear and beautiful, just beautiful! *She's* beautiful too and it was great being so close and seeing all her different expressions. She's quite animated, which doesn't come across at all in the videos I've seen. I can't really describe the concert or the music any better, sorry. If you haven't heard Sarah, you should...it's just that simple. (That reminds me that I didn't put any Sarah on the Collection tapes :-( ) I had brought a Warpaint with me to give to Sarah and, during the break between the opening (not even worth describing) act and Sarah, I wrote a note and tucked it into the cassette. Even though I was so close, I never really saw an opportunity to give the cassette to her while she was on stage. After the lights came up and the roadies and band started breaking down equipment, I gave it to the keyboard player and asked him to please give it to Sarah. He said he would. Then Chris and I decided to wait around for a while at the door we knew (from past experience) she would come out. We waited about a half hour and, just as I was ready to suggest leaving, she came out. She saw us and went "oh, hi!" and we ohhi'd her back. Her arms were full with flowers and stuff and I had one of my "pre-release" cassettes with me for her to sign. (These are the cassettes that were promos way back last year, before they moved the release date to January) She said "wait, let me take this stuff to the bus and I'll be right back." We weren't sure if she would come back but she did! In less than a minute too. She signed the cassette and we stood around talking about videos, the tour (I asked her about playing Newfoundland, Beth. She said she had a great time there) and the last tour, when Chris saw her play in a tiny little club in Chicago called Schubas (A *great* place! We've seen Dave and Barbara, Laurie Freelove, Lisa Germano and Mouth Music there) I asked her if she had gotten a tape from...."Oh yeah, Happy Rhodes, yes I got it, you were the one? Thank you" and I talked a bit about Happy and she being "compared" in some reviews. She was pleased that she'd "finally gotten to the point where people are compared to me, instead of me being compared to others" :-) and then she had to go. She's *so* nice and very sweet. I was suprised to see that she's very small. It's funny how our favorite female singers always turn out to be short, thin and small-boned. Kate, Jane, Happy and Sarah are all about the same size- I'm sure they could wear each other's clothes with no problems at all! I wore my Happy sweatshirt that Pat Tessitore had given me. No one asked me about it :-( and actually I wish I'd worn my Peter Gabriel "SO" sweat- shirt, because Sarah's a big fan of Peters. (Before the opening act the sound system was playing the Single Gun Theory album, but at the break it changed to Peter's Passion album. In the note I tucked into Warpaint, I mentioned that Happy is also a big fan of Peter and that Feed the Fire is partially inspired by him) The "announcer" for the show was the music director for WXRT. After he gave his 'XRT speil and started to leave the stage, I yelled out "PLAY HAPPY RHODES!!" :-) I don't think he missed it, but I doubt it will do any good. In the hubub, we heard that Sarah might be coming back in the summer. We asked Sarah and she said it was a possibility, they weren't sure yet. After the night's sold out performance and the incredible response from the audience, I think it would be *seriously* considered. We'll definitely go again, and I *will* tape that one!!! The next stop in the tour was Cleveland, but from there I don't know where she's headed. Does anyone have a tour itinerary? If anyone goes and gets a chance to tape the show, please,please,please...I want a copy, please, sir or ma'am. It was a wonderful evening!! Vickie ps: Christine...I do have Lonely is an Eyesore, what can I do for you? I also have (a dub) of the video compilation that was released at the same time. I've been looking for the original to buy but haven't found it yet, except once and I didn't have the money at the time. The Rockline interview was also amazing. She was wearing the Ecto T-shirt, and talked all about the FU_BLU_MA_LI and us. I couldn't get through though because people were calling from all over the country who had just seen the world premiere of the video, and were asking for the ordering info. She also got a call from Janet asking her about Poetic Justice. And then I woke up. :) It WAS a joke. I can't believe that Vickie told Kevin about this... Vickie, you should have told him about Poetic Justice. This song deserves to be a #1 hit!! ...But seriously, that's all for now. No more jokes, I swear. :) Boston ectophiles and friends, should we all wear our Ecto T's to the Sarah McLachlan concert, now that she knows about Happy?? Vickie and Chris were there... we sat in the very front of the very middle, so when I got up to applaud, I was practically on the stage! Sarah is an amazing performer... she is very expressive and intense... the show at the park west was sold out(!) and she looked genuinely moved (better--shocked or overwelmed) by the attendance and the appreciation foisted on her by a big room full of fans. But she definitely deserved it. Her voice is wonderful (as you already know) and the songs are truly infectious. I know Vickie will have more to say, so I defer to her... but I will say that I echo and agree with everything vickie says before she even says it. Don't miss Sarah if you get a chance to see her. It may have been small consolation for missing the Hapster, but I'll take what I can get. Anyways she did two encores, one a billy holiday song which she said women were committing suicide to in the 40s so they had to ban it... she prefaced the song, saying that she loved depressing songs because she has so much joy in singing them. Vickie was attempting to give her a warpaint tape... after hearing her say that, I'd venture a guess that she'll just *love* HTR... (especially everything). BTW, I don't remember saying but I met someone from Minneapolis and I must have mentioned HTR to her and she said "sure, I've heard of happy rhodes". So, like, I thought she was just saying this to impress me (---not---) but in fact she listens to some progressive station in Mpls and they really did play happy rhodes! Needless to say this is the first time anyone has ever heard of her (other than bush fans or ectopeople) so I guess things are looking up (I'm still a bit catatonic from that response as surely is evident). wish I could have made it to philly. when i saw vickie I felt like i had nothingto say to her since it had all been said already in ecto. I asked her "so, how was it?" but that was obviously a rhetorical question cause I already knew... oh well, you know what I mean. Anyone know ifTori Amos if coming to Chicago? More important, does anyone have the address/price/phone of a place that reliably sells her cd singles (*all of 'em, preferably*). Smells Like Teen Spirit, ay? I'm still thinkin' April Fools. Should I use the 1st poll's results, should I wait for this poll? We'll have to have another a couple of months after the CDs come out, to include those people who have been waiting for them and haven't heard any of the early songs yet. Just wondering what I should do... Greg, your Ectomobile story was hilarious! Thanks for it! Did anyone see this month's issue of _Dirty Linen_? (An aside: Does anyone have the issue of DL that Happy was reviewed in and can I get a photocopy of that page for my files? Thanks!) Anyway, they reviewed the 31st Anniversary Celebration at Caffe Lena from last October and, of course, never mentioned Happy at all. Long timers with sharp memories will remember that Happy sang backup vocals for someone (my memory is pretty dull, can't remember her name) and her car broke down on the way there and she had to push it. It's a perfect example of how far Happy still has to go. This is a very famous club, and Happy is a local artist, yet she wasn't invited to perform by herself. Well, she wasn't invited to perform at all, rather the singer asked Happy to do the backups. Someday they'll be *begging* Happy to come perform there, and, if she can find time in her busy schedule, perhaps she will. :-) John Wheeler, your tapes will be on their way lickity-spilt. Ken D. If anyone's in the Chicago area, The Moon Seven Times is playing at the Avalon at 10:30pm on Thursday, April 9th, opening for Paul Kelly. I'll be there, so say hi to the tall guy in the trenchcoat. Also, Big Hat is playing Mabel's here in Champaign, IL! Pretty cool, I can finally hear them. M7x is opening for them, so it's a double dose. M7x will be releasing a single in late April of the 7" variety. No new material, but hopefully some fuel for alternative radio. The single will cook for awhile, and then the CD will be released (in an eye-tearingly uninformed guess) in late July, early August, or thereabouts. Three new songs are in their concert playlist, and they are _good_. If anyone has any suggestions for good targets for the single, I'd love to hear them. Lynn's voice has improved a lot. Now, if you're familiar with Lynn Canfield's voice, you'll probably say "It was great already!" Well, it was great, now it's something more. She's gained a lot more control, and it's to the point where my knees go weak for the first few minutes of gigs. I promised an overview of M7x a long time ago, but I've been busy getting back into school, getting a job, messing around at M7x concerts, and just being plain lazy. I'm still trying.
