Sue Malenfant, you joined up!!! Neatoid!!! This is a weird story that only net people can understand: we went to grade-school together long ago and far away, then completely lost touch. Last month I got an e-message from her asking if this Meredith Tarr she had seen on .gaffa was the one she went to school with, and lo and behold... She's always had great musical taste. :) Sue, do you want me to make a Happy sampler for you, or do you want to wait for the one Doug may make or are you just going to order all five straight from Happy? :) Vickie, you may already know this, but Marta Sebestyen has a new album out called _Tavosz Tavosz_, or something like that. I played it on my show yesterday- it was pretty interesting. Also, the new Tanita Tikaram is in, and I'm not going to judge based on the one song I played. I'm going to listen to the whole thing before I pass judgement, though I do have a feeling I know what that is going to be...she's always gotten on my nerves. "Big Fat Cat" does show off Katharina Franck's voice well...another song that does is "Moon", from the second Rainbirds album. To the person who asked, (sorry, my brain shut off last week) their label is Mercury/Phonogram out of Germany (though I believe they're distributed in America as well). The catalogue numbers for the first two are: Rainbirds 834 023-2 Call Me Easy, Say I'm Strong, Love Me My Way, It Ain't Wrong 838 176-2 I don't know the number for _Two Faces_, the latest. At the very least I should think you could order from the label directly (or not- how do these things work?). I picked up two freebies from the station last night- a CD single of the Siberry-lang duet from "Until The End Of The World", which is interesting, and a four-song Michelle Shocked promo-thing for her upcoming album _Arkansas Traveler_. I think this will be a great album- very down-home, along the Mississippi sort of stuff. _Warpaint_ got taken out of the New Releases rack, and I must say I was very psyched it stayed in there as long as it did, and that it even got put in at all. I managed to get _Solace_ put back in, though- I know it's been almost two months, but we were on break. I think the MD, who is rather mentally disturbed and got the job quite literally by default, is afraid of me. :> We had a meeting and I implored people to play people like Sarah and Tori and Danielle Dax and Area (in anticipation of a Moon Seven Times album) and of course Happy. Now we'll see if anybody listened to me... Barry, I taped the show. I'll get it out to you hopefully Friday. You get to hear me deal with the worst show I've ever done as far as technical difficulties go, I hope you enjoy it. :} Incidentally, I'm going to be taping all my shows from now until the end of the semester. If you would like a copy of one or some of them, send me some tapes (60,90,100,120 minutes, it's your choice- the shows are two hours each) and I'll set you up. Or you could just send me a bag of tapes in a Priority Mail Bag like Barry did. It freaked our mail carrier and my housemates out... :) You too can experience Meredith at her best (9am, there's no brain activity until at least 10:30)! ====================================================================== |Meredith Tarr "Get to the point you sappy wimps| |Wesleyan University I haven't got a lifetime | |Middletown, CT Simplicity is beauty | |USA, Earth Are there poets less sublime?" | |mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Happy Rhodes | ====================================================================== ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 2 Apr 92 9:46:32 MET DST From: Albert Philipsen Subject: Re: West Australian Review hi ! Short party report from me too. I haven't read everybody elses (including Klaus') completely yet, no time, so I might repeat things you know already. It was truly great!! For a few days I took the part of deputy Ecto-Ma (Vickie, didn't ask your permission, have I got it?) and fed the bunch of you. You made it simple for me, you actually ate what I cooked and never complained ;) To continue the concert report from Albany: no injuries, no arrests and no major disasters. I mean, picture this, 6 people who have never met before, spending a very prolonged weekend together and actually having fun! BTW, Jeff, 1000 thank you's for making this report possible (or at least easier): Hear this everybody!! He repaired my extremely misbehaving return key, which probably increases the value of this my ol' PC 2fold ! Having guests is always a good chance to get out and see things we normally don't find the time to see or don't want to go see on a weekend. We went to our favourite museum (We drag all guests there, so whoever else wants to come see us, beware!), our favourite restaurant (we go THERE even alone...:), a really great medieval castle in the area where, if it hadn't been for you, we probably never would have got round to go and, and this can hardly be avoided when in Wuppertal, the Schwebebahn and the zoo. Here Court took the lead and followed all the signs that looked roughly like a cat ... anybody surprised ;)? And rounding all this off, the Sugarcubes on Monday. They are a LOT noisier and heavier live than on CD, they often sound like the B 52's gone mad. But live that's really great. They had a lot of beat and we danced and hopped a lot to it! Even Klaus ;) BUT, all this is nothing compared to the HIGHLIGHT of the whole thing: THE CONCERT TAPE(S)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Albany arrived on monday) The sound quality especially on Greg's tapes from Philly is really good. I closed my eyes and got quite close to imagining I were there! I mean, I love Warpaint and the 1st4, but they added a whole lot of new aspects to it! I never would have imagined The Drears could be so danceable! BTW, you lucky ones who have been there, which one did Happy dance like a bat to ?????? Besides this, we decorated the room with the Signatures from the band, and Angelos' (hi!) colour prints from his experiments with Happy's covers. Together with the pics (so great to get to see you!! You obviously had a most wonderful time (envyenvyenvy)) we definitely felt part of the whole experience. Ah yes, and we showed everybody the pics I took in Boston. We also decorated chairs but .... :+ :+ To round this off, we wrote a card to Happy, to let her know how much we loved it and to thank her for allowing the taping, with a personal message from everyone. [which hasn't been sent yet, because we wait for the pix] Just noticed, this is getting pretty long for a short report! So, to finish this off, THANKS EVERYBODY for coming, thanks for your great presents (among other things: Court, yummmmm, you know why, Jeff&Michelle, the book is always within reach, Albert, we've played that CD several times in a row!), THANKS AGAIN Greg and WOJ and everybody who contributed to "connect" us to the concerts. And Steve and Martin for calling of course!! I'm sure I've forgotten lots of very important things, but I have to go, Bye for now, Claudia _____ claudia@inphobos.w.open.de (In Search Of A New Signature :) ======================================================================== Subject: Gemischtes From: klaus@inphobos.w.open.de (Cosmic Vagabond) Date: Wed, 01 Apr 92 22:24:50 GMT Angelos, who read Billboard, wrote: > BTW, even the Rainbirds get mentioned in that Billboard!! But a nice addition to the collection. :) Merow (aka Court): > it is like Christmas or something..with Klaus being the only one with willpower > and making us save the tapes until now!!!! Willpower? Me? You must be talking about someone else. Except for occasional stubbornness there is not a lot going into that direction. :) I had been saying "We probably should wait listening to the tapes until Saturday night", hoping that the others would object. ;) Meredith: > Wow, Vickie, you were playing Rainbirds already three years ago!!! The 'El Mirage Desert Version' and 'String Quartet Version' from the album, plus an additional 'Third Face Insanity Mix' which is quite weird (but good!). A couple of days without enough sleep. After being a Happy and KaTe party, it changed into a Star Trek party later on. We covered the whole range, except for the cartoon, seeing an episode of the old and the new series, as well as the motion pictures II and III. I've just had my first Happy dream, which was not very imaginative, but here is it anyway: Happy called the Ectoparty on monday after Court had already left. Over the phone she sang a song for us, which I didn't recognize. The instrumentation was only bass, and she said that 'Andrew' was playing it. After Court left on monday to continue her spring holiday, the rest (except Claudia) went on a touristic trip to Cologne, where we had a look at the dome (what a surprise) and a walk through town. That ended at WOM, a big music store. We checked Billboard for the _Warpaint_ review (we found it!!!) and bought some KaTe postcards we haven't seen before. Returning home, we found our 2nd FedEx parcel with the tapes from the Albany gig [Thanks Woj!!!]. On it's way to Chicago, US Mail did it's best to delay it and, as a bonus, to damage it. The cases were broken, as well as a corner of one of the tapes. Luckily the recording itself survived the transport. As we had other plans for the night, we did a high speed dub of the first tape, and played that in the car, on our way to the Sugarcubes concert in Duesseldorf. At the venue our ears were stressed by the opening act, a group called 'Sexepil', which, despite their name, appealed to us in no way. They were mastering their instruments very well, unfortunately limited to the creation of noise. The concert of the 'cubes was a lot of fun! As a newcomer to this group, I can't compare it to anything they've done before. Live they sounded a lot more B-52'ish to me than on the new album (which is alright with me :). The songs were well played and Bjork's voice is truly amazing. We agreed that we couldn't understand how such a tiny person can have such a powerful voice. On the way back we enjoyed the 2nd half of the 1st tape, and finished the concert at home. WOW!!! Hey, you Albany guys must have been hoarse after the concert for days. ;) I've noticed that the two concerts were indeed very different. The band was more experimentive in Albany and I personally liked the alternative versions a lot. A couple of pictures have been taken from 4 cameras. The film in our camera isn't finished yet, so everybody who is waiting for exposures has to do it a little bit longer. Again, many, many thanks to everybody who contributed to the party!!! I enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone of you, and I'm sure we will meet again in the not so far away future (there are plans for another meeting already :). Cheers, Klaus. ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." (The Y was umlauted, but it's hard to show that on the computer.) The same book noted that Aspirin arrived on earth at Bayer's original plant in Elberfeld, not far from Wuppertal, and that the company's original; U.S. plant was in Rensselaer, N.Y., not far from Albany. Seems that we're closer to a cure for the headaches of Happyvangelism than we realized. In re Angelos' query via email: My best advice is to get all Laura Nyro's pre-1975 albums. Being in the Nice Price line, they're cheap. I lean weakly toward _Eli and the Thirteenth Conffession_, though, as a single primer. For epitomes of her urban sensibility as such, I suggest "Mercy on Broadway" on _New York Tendaberry_, as well as the latter album's title track. For angst as such, I suggest "Christmas in my Soul" from _Christmas and the Beads of Sweat_, scattered though it is with dated political references many of you may be too young to remember.
