I managed to get a copy of her first album "Warpaint" before I left, and it's impressive stuff. If you like Kate Bush and Tori Amos, you'll love Happy Rhodes. I have already welcomed some of you, but Hi anyway. I hope I didn't miss anyone. If I did, Hi! It's about time to post another Ectophile FAQ but I'll wait until Doug's Philly post shows up. Doug....oh Doug.... Since it's common for people to join Ecto without having heard Happy's music, I wonder if a "Happy Sampler" might be a good idea to add to Doug's collection of tapes to dub. (uh oh, is that Doug I hear groaning way out in Colorado?) This would be for people who are already Ectophiles though. What do people think? Doug, and new people (or long-timers) who haven't yet heard Happy, tell us what you think. Of course, the fun part would be to decide what would go on the tape...yikes! I doubt she'll be very pleased with me, but my long-time listeners were the first outside Albany to support Happy and they deserve to hear them (she rationalizes.) I'm glad people are starting to post more about the concerts, keep it up folks. Yes, I will get to mine soon...really, promise. Woj, Greg had no idea I was coming (I don't think) and the mystery.person was definitely not me. It was someone I *thought* was coming but it seems he didn't make it. Mystery.person, you know who you are...please e-mail me and tell me why you didn't come. I can't seem to get through to your address. I hope everything is ok. Anyway, yeah, I asked woj who he was and he wouldn't tell me! A process of elimination would have told me the answer but I was too excited and too frazzled (from our adventures with Jose) to guess. I grabbed woj by his coat and yelled "DON'T DO THAT TO ME!! WHO ARE YOU???!!" I hope no one thought I was really upset, because I wasn't. I was trying to be funny. A very big, affectionate hug followed woj's answer. Court, Klaus and Albert, thanks for your Ectoparty reports! They were all great fun to read and made us feel a part of it. Hey Meredith, don't worry about what you said in gaffa about me & Tori. I can say anything I want here in Ecto and not get flamed, but I don't feel quite so secure about gaffa. I just wanted to fend off any possible flames from people who think Tori's the cat's meow and who might get the idea from your post that I can't stand her. I got an e-mail tonight from someone who asked me about Happy, yay! Ha! I got another that asked me what "gaffa" means. I told him to ask in rec.music.gaffa ! No really, I answered him as best I could, which was probably very lame. I know what it means to *me* but I haven't a clue what Kate had in mind. I tried to be among the latter, but woke up with the sun at 6:30am! I couldn't go back to sleep, so dozed until I got up at 10:30am. I drove down to the Econo-lodge to pick up Vickie, but was surprised to not find her in the lobby. Check-out time was 11am, and I had arrived at 11:10am. The woman at the front desk said she hadn't checked out, so I called her room, and a sleepy Kiri answered. Both of them were still sleeping! In fact, Vickie answered her 10:30am wake up call, and went straight back to sleep. I joined them as they packed, and Vickie and I bid farewell to Kiri, and wished her the best, driving through the snow, which fortunately was not as bad as her fears. Before we left Albany, however, Vickie wanted to collect as many copies of the _Buzz_ magazine with the Happy article as possible. She had a few from the QE2, but wanted enough to distribute to anyone interested in Philadelphia. We cruised around, stopping at every likely record, video, etc. store. Most of the stores had none or just a few, but Vickie hit the jackpot at one record store, a store where the clerk had heard of Happy. We ended up with about thirty issues. (Of course, in the end, Vickie forgot to distribute them in all the excitement of Philadelphia. Only while taking her stuff out of my car after the show, did I find the magazines and distribute them to the few Ectophiles still around). So early in the afternoon, we drove out of Albany, though our exact destination was uncertain. Jessica said she might be able to put us up for the night, but I had been unable to call her before we left Albany. So we headed to her place by default, driving through light snow all the way. We didn't want to cause any problems by just showing up on her doorstep. So we headed out to look for a phone and a place to eat. That was where the fun began. During that evening, I probably drove over every road within a twenty mile radius of Jessica's place. We found a phone in a supermarket in Plainsboro Plaza, but couldn't get hold of Jessica at home or work. We sat on a bench there for about two hours, enjoying excellent conversation about music, gossip, philosophy, and much else. It was an odd but memorable highlight of the whole trip. I can't help but wonder what the shoppers and store employees thought about us. Eventually, we left to look for dinner, aided by vague directions from one of the shoppers. I have no idea if I followed them right, but we found a Burger King in Hightstown, where we rested and talked until about 9:30pm. Afterwards, we finally reached Jessica, but she couldn't house us for the night, so another jaunt along the local roads eventually brought us to a nice affordable motel to spend the night. We talked some more, watched VH-1 Classic Videos (Their definition of classic only made us feel old), before going to bed. The highlight of Friday was Happy's appearances at a couple of record stores in Philadelphia. Jessica had thought about going, but couldn't. However, we did visit her at home early in the afternoon, until Vickie and I left for Philadelphia. Happy told Vickie that the first appearance would be at 21st Century Sound in Bryn Mawr at 4pm. We arrived late, or so we thought. The sign in the window said Happy was scheduled to appear at 6:30pm. We went in anyway, and talked with Lenny, the owner, who told us the appearances had been switched, and Happy went to 3rd Street Jazz at 4pm. Unfortunately, it was too late for us to get down there in time. We talked with Lenny, who was a big Happy booster, about Happy, her first four albums (which he had never heard, so Vickie gave him a sampler), and the net. He was trying to secure access to the net, among other things to set up a newsgroup for an artist he was promoting. Neither Vickie nor I had the heart to disabuse him of the notion. We left and spent the rest of the time at McDonald's. When we returned, we once again ran into Happy (with Suzanne (?)) in the sidewalk, on her way to the record store. The Third Street Jazz appearance was a disaster (Anybody notice how much Spinal Tap keeps being mentioned in these situations?), as the owners didn't promote it, and Happy thought they just wanted to talk with her. So she did for several minutes before leaving, as no one else showed up. However, Bob Brown and his friend (Charlie?) arrived after she left, disappointed to find her gone. At least, they did meet her at 21st Century Sound. Happy's appearance there was much more of a success. Lenny had promoted it, and had a display holding Happy stuff. For me, it was great just to see _Warpaint_ on sale in a record store! About a dozen other people came within the half hour that Happy was there. Bob Brown was the only Ectophile besides Vickie and me, though Bill Pringle, a denizen of music newsgroups was there. My favorite moment came when Bob Brown pulled out the Happy picture that came with the Ecto SiG tape for Happy to autograph. Happy took one look at it, then took a sharp look at Vickie. She signed it anyway, and Happy's brow furrowed even deeper when Vickie asked her to sign the T-shirt that Vickie had made with that picture on its front. Happy also autographed the T-shirt that Kiri made for Vickie to commemorate the tour. We Ectophiles (both there and as many as Vickie could shang-hai at the next day's concert) also autographed them. During the appearance, it was fun to listen to the "normal" Happy fans ask questions that have become FAQ's here on Ecto. I couldn't help but almost laugh when I heard them. It's sometimes hard to remember how little the world knows of Happy and how much we do. Besides the autographs, we heard some news. The biggest and best was that only 91 tickets were left for the concert, and everyone expected it to sell out. (It did). Bob Brown and Bob Leonard (Happy's business manager) swapped horror stories about the concert manager, but they had to give him credit for believing that Happy could sell out a 800 seat auditorium. Unfortunately, he (and WXPN) had to be leaned on to do so. Happy said that they had firm offers to put on concerts in other cities (She mentioned several but I only remember Minneapolis for sure), but they turned them down, as all of their concerts (even the Albany one) were money-losing propositions, so they wanted to stay close to home. We also got to see Suzanne and Bob Leonard in action, and they are quite aggressive in promoting Happy, more than the basically shy Happy and calm Kevin. Vickie and I left shortly after Happy and company did, though we stopped several times to find an _Inquirer_ which was supposed to run a two-page article about Happy on Friday or Saturday. It must have been Saturday, though Friday's paper did have Happy in the concert listings for the weekend! The drive to Jessica's was more exciting than I wanted. Due to tiredness and an interesting conversation about music with Vickie, I missed three (count 'em, three) turns during the drive, giving us a nice tour of downtown Trenton after dark. I also took a different way to get to Jessica's (my fourth, if I counted right). Yet we made it, and spent the rest of the evening in quiet conversation with Jessica, and even Greg and Kiri via computer. I made the mistake of logging into Olympic and finding I had too much to do when I returned to work Monday. Saturday morning, Jessica took us on a tour of her workplace at Rutgers, which explained why we couldn't get in touch with her Thursday (Besides the fact that she was sleeping the day away under a desk). She doesn't have an office and I doubt that on my own I could find even one of the places she showed us during the tour. Along the way, we were introduced to athos, hardees, and the Ecto mail box (the physical one, not electronic). On the way home, we tried to wake up Francois, who wanted to go to the concert. With Vickie's ringing the obnoxious buzzer, my knocking on the door, and Jessica's throwing snowballs at his bedroom window, he slept blissfully on, though we woke everyone else up within a thirty mile radius. He probably would have slept through a full military assault. On our return, we prepared for the trip to Philadelphia. People gathered in a timely fashion. Barry Wong, the Ectomobile (with Greg, Liz, Kiri, Angelos, and Mark Semich (Isn't someone going to describe this thing?)), Dave Steiner and Simon arrived within a short period and on time. Vickie pushed everyone to sign her T-shirts. Greg pushed everyone to put on a name tag. We all admired the art-work of the already storied Ectomobile. Eventually we all pushed onto the road. The caravan of three vehicles motored smoothly into Philadelphia, though we still had some fun. At one point, we were in the left lane, and Greg (behind me) pulled into the right. Thinking he was letting someone by, I pulled over in front of him. However, he just pulled to my left, with Kiri holding a sign "What # is XPN?". I tried to spell it with my fingers unsuccessfully (hard to do while driving), so while they pulled ahead of me, Vickie spelled it on a bag. I pulled alongside the Ectomobile and they got the message. Our car (Vickie, Barry, and I) were listening all along, disappointed that no Happy was being played. At a gas stop, Vickie called and requested Happy, telling them about the Ecto caravan. "Waking Up" was played over an hour later, with no mention of Ecto. :( The drive through Philadelphia was a bit more wild through all the traffic, and the caravan broke up several times in spite of some wild driving. Eventually we spotted Simon flagging us down, and we parked close to Eden, the cafeteria/ restaurant we all met at. I counted nineteen Ectophiles (including friends) there, and we took over the back room. It was fun to watch people pop around the corner, see us (resplendent in our Ecto T-shirts), turn around, and walk out. All, that is, except for a woman who was meeting her priest for an affair (At least, that's what everyone else told me that she told them). Dinner was a fun event, during which a few extra tickets were sold, including to the cashier. The group broke up in pieces and re-gathered at the auditorium, as everyone had some things to do. I went on my own, mainly to feed quarters into the parking meter, as Vickie waited with her friend Charlie for Charlie's friend to return. I found the auditorium, but it took running into Steve Golden for me to find the doors. While heading there, we ran into most of the other Ectophiles in the area. They got their information via the front door, and Jessica managed to stay in, apparently helping set things up. So on a cool evening, the rest of us stood outside the doors, watching the crowd grow, catching glimpses of the band warming up in the auditorium, and giving the doorman a real hard time. Well, it wasn't us necessarily, but other musicians, people looking for tickets, and people with business inside kept us knocking on the shut doors. During that wait, Steve G bought a few copies of the Inquirer complete with the two-page Happy article. Ecto even got a mention as a group of fans which "micro-analyze her lyrics and talk about her three cats." During the wait, we heard that only twenty tickets were left and given the number of requests we heard just there, the sell-out was assured. When the doors opened at 6:45pm, we were among the first in. We quickly took over the fourth and fifth rows of the central area (The first three went to the WXPN bigshots and big donors). One thing I noticed is that the people who had been at the Albany concert were much more excited before this one. Greg was practically ready to go into orbit. Though I tried not to get too excited, it affected me, too. We _knew_ what magic was coming. The final minutes passed impatiently, as music chosen by Happy played over the sound system (not much louder than the general hubbub in the room). We watched as the theater was filled to the brim, something which I almost couldn't believe, that many people coming out to see Happy. Our Ecto T-shirts certainly stood out, and people continually asked about (and for) them. I spread the gospel to a small group behind me. I'm not going to say much about the concert itself, as most of the details were the same as in Albany. They had a larger stage, and so the drum set was in the back rather than tucked into an nearly invisible corner. Happy wore a loose open white blouse over an outfit similar to the one she wore in Albany for the first set. In the second, she changed to a white sleeveless turtleneck. (She later told us that she meant to wear the fuzzy blue scarf Vickie included in the Happy Gift Project, but she left it in Albany. :( ) The song selection was the same, and the show felt more staged than the Albany show with less spontaneity. With fixed seating, we couldn't do any dancing, which disappointed Kiri greatly. The only notable story was the cries of "We love you, Ray!" coming from a small group of Ectophiles, a cry that probably only the band and a small handful of Ectophiles fully appreciated. People around me probably wondered why I was trying not to die of laughter. Yet the most surprising thing about the show was that SHE TOPPED ALBANY. I couldn't believe it, but they clearly did a better job on this show. The second set was utterly unbelievable. For the first set, the majority of the audience gave polite applause to the unfamiliar songs from Happy's first four albums. However, by the second set, they were really getting into it. "Oh, the Drears" early in the second set especially electrified the whole room. After the concert, many Ectophiles were sky high. Vickie was a demon full of energy, hugging anything that wore a blue T-shirt. I and many others were in total shock from the show we had just seen. Live concerts simply don't get better than this. Afterwards, we were "discreetly" invited to the post-concert party in the Penn Towers restuarant. Believe me, I doubt the staff there wanted us. The doorman looked at our group with much suspicion, until Vickie vouched for us. Even when seated at a table, we couldn't get any service until after an hour or two. I'm going to have to leave the description of this party to someone else, as I don't remember much. I was stunned in the wake of the concert and dead tired in the wake of a long day and long exciting week. Happy and members of the band circulated around the room and treated us much better than the staff (and other party goers) did, which I'm sure warmed our hearts. Not too many groups would go that much out of their way for their fans with so many other important people around. They were free with their stories and autographs. The party broke off rather awkwardly for a couple of reasons. Happy and company found it hard to get away to eat, and the remaining Ectophiles had no place to stay. We originally planned to stay in the same hotel, but we never picked one. So we hung around uncertain what to do next. At least, the stalling did give us a chance to show off the Ectomobile to Kevin and (much to our surprise) Happy and others in their group. If they didn't know how strange we were, they certainly knew then! Finally, they left, and Greg said, "We have two choices. Either we drive down to stay at Mark Carroll's house (a 45min drive) or we sleep right here (pointing to the curb at his feet)". That about summed it up, so I picked up my car, unloaded Vickie's stuff (She was staying with Mike and Angel), and said goodbye to her, my constant companion for three days, a wonderful three days (Thanks again, Vickie!!). A caravan of four (Mark Carroll, Jeff Burka, the Ectomobile, and myself) drove to Mark's house with no trouble, except for the occasional vehicle horning into our midst. We arrived about 2:30am, and immediately rolling out our sleeping bags, and went straight to bed. Unfortunately, I had to get up at 6:30am, while everyone else was sleeping (I hope I didn't wait anyone else up (I don't think I did)), and invented my own way out of Newark DE, (Half asleep I missed yet another turn!) and drove to the airport in very light traffic, listening to some Tom Lehrer of all things. I dropped my rental car off there, having put 1008mi on it. The rest of my trip home was thankfully uneventful and very smooth. I went into this whole trip with no idea what was going to happen. I'll even admit to some second thoughts beforehand. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip and wouldn't have missed it for anything! The concerts were just pure magic (I wish I could put magic into words better), and I had a lot of fun with all the Ectophiles I met, quite a fun bunch. It was a wonderful week, the memory of which I'll always cherish, though I'm _still_ recovering from it! Finally, I apologize if I got anything wrong here. By the end of the week, I (and Vickie) were getting very tired, and my memory is not the best under good conditions. I also cut a few corners, leaving out a few details, as this was getting long enough as it was. Okay. Is someone going to describe the Ectomobile, or am _I_ going to have to do it? Greg? Angelos? kIrI? I may add other items as I remember then. For example, I do remember one leftover item from after the Albany concert. We were outside the QE2, taking pictures of each other, when Happy and Kelly left. We started talking with them, and David Lubkin was readying his camera to take a picture, and Happy gave him her patented sidelong glare (a standard expression in her arsenal, judging from meeting her several times in the course of the week). David took his picture, anyway. David, if that picture came out at all, can I get a copy of it? Vickie writes: It's about time to post another Ectophile FAQ but I'll wait until Doug's Philly post shows up. Doug....oh Doug.... Go ahead! What's the difference between seven and eight tapes, anyway? :) The "Happy sampler" would be a good idea. As for what to put on it, why not return to your original idea for the Ecto SiG, where you were going to put the songs we voted as Happy's best. Or we could conduct another poll, since we have more people now and even old timers' tastes may have changed. By the way, didn't Tori Amos do a song called "Happy Sampler"? (Sorry, couldn't resist. :) ) I wrote: A number of surprises popped up, but none more surprising to me than a cover of a relatively obscure Nilsson song! Vickie replied: Yeah? Which song? I should know, but I don't. But that would be telling! However, since very few people have probably ever heard the song (though it has Nilsson's fingerprints all over it), I will tell. The song is "Think About Your Troubles" which appears on Harry Nilsson's (I hope I got the right number of l's and s's in his name) _The Point_, the soundtrack to an animated TV special way, way back when. Another song from that album was used for advertising Plymouth Arrows, "Me and My Arrow", though in the album/TV show, Arrow was a dog, not a car. I asked: Does anyone remember who did the original version of "Beware of Darkness" that Concrete Blonde covers? Vickie replied: Hmmm, I hope someone answers this. I just assumed it was a CB original. I hope someone answers this, too. Maybe hearing the tape will trip someone's memory, though the vaguest nigglings of my memory say it dates back to late Sixties or early Seventies. C'mon, people! This is driving me up the wall! :) Re: Laura Nyro. Mitch gave a good overview of her as a singer-songwriter, including a discography. However, I'd like to note that the emphasis should be more on "songwriter". Her own records never did well at all (I haven't heard any, so I can't comment why, though I believe she just lacked the voice to go with her songs), but many other artists had huge hits with the songs she wrote. I can't name them off the top of my head, but you've all heard Laura Nyro songs without realizing it! Meredith, thanks for the tape listing correction. I made the correction in my list. The problem is that Vickie listed the songs as "artist, album, song" with the album name in small print. I felt it should be "artist, song, album", since I couldn't type small, and I'm surprised if I only reversed one entry! Vickie, I also caught your post to alt.music.alternative with the vocalists added for the SiG 48 tape, and will add them to my master list. Thanks for that review, Martin, though the circumstances behind it are absolutely mind-boggling to me. It's a small world! I personally didn't see an Australian in Albany. You can clearly see Vickie in front of the stage, and hear Jessica sing!! It's amazing! The world premiere will be tonight at 10pm! Followed by Happy on Rockline. Be sure to call!!
