It was interesting to see her in this new format last Sunday at the Blue Bar of the Black Cat Club in San Francisco. It's a great deal...$5 for three sets (between 9:30-1:30)...unfortunately, two of the folks in my party of 4 had to be at work bright & early next morning, so I only got to see the first half of her show. Emily played the grand piano, and was accompanied by a bass player and a drummer. I think this was the first show she had ever played with them, but it sounded pretty good. The drummer was fun to watch -- he had a big grin on his face during much of the show. I thought the bass player bore a striking resemblance to the lead singer in the Spin Doctors. They did a lot of material from Emily's CDs, plus a couple of fantastic covers: Joni Mitchell's "Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody" from WILD THINGS RUN FAST (in honor of Joni's concert in the area the night before) and the Pretenders' "Mystery Achievement," which sounded terrific played on a grand piano! The experience was marred somewhat by a very noisy, boisterous group having dinner in the bar area (about 8 men -- I wondered if it was a bachelor party?), but fortunately they left between sets 1 & 2. Anyway, the trio will be performing again on Sunday, May 28, at the same venue -- see http://bayarea.citysearch.com/E/V/SFOCA/0012/77/49/ for more details. If you're in the area, don't miss it! - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * http://www.interbridge.com ------------------------------ End of dream-gasoline-digest V3 #5 **********************************
