It was held at Broadway Studios in North Beach, San Francisco. I'd never been there before, but it was a really neat swanky ballroom. It was the sort of place that made you want to drink a cocktail, and they actually had two "theme" drink specials specific to the evening's entertainment -- Emily's Wallbender (pineapple and orange juice plus Southern Comfort and amaretto) and the MANhattan. Cute! Both Emily and Amy essentially played their new CDs in order. Emily and her wonderful band played first. She was obviously in a very good mood, probably thankful that the darn album was finally finished. ;) I'd heard a few of the songs before during solo performances, but she hadn't played live with her band in a while, and it was definitely a treat to hear how beautifully her new music has been arranged. I was particularly taken with "Velvet Eye," the first song of her set. Amy X and Men were even goofier than usual -- they were all dressed in sports outfits (Amy was a cheerleader; Herb Heinz wore tennis clothes; JT Quillan III wore a jock strap on the outside of his trademark tuxedo) in honor of their album title. This is probably the ninth or tenth time I've seen AXN&M, but I never get tired of them. They're so exuberant and fun. After hearing these songs live for over 2 years now, it's great to finally own 'em on CD. Though their onstage schtick has made such a strong impression by now that I'm sure I'll picture JT peeling an orange every time I hear "Orange County." (A replica of one of their memorable props, a kitchen spatula that's wielded during "Big Barbecue," was for sale at the show last night, custom-printed with "Amy X Neuberg and Men - Sports Chips Booty.") I've had a chance to listen to Emily's new CD a couple of times today, and it's really wonderful from start to finish -- the first track is the eight-minute epic "Velvet Eye," which I think is the most amazing thing she's ever recorded. It's soooo beautiful. Don't get me wrong, the rest is great too, it's just that I'm fixating on that song at the moment. :) It's hard to believe this is basically a homemade, self-produced album...I'm listening to it through headphones now and the sound is so full and rich, and the packaging is fantastic, with lots of great photos. It's obvious that Emily was a graphic designer before she "retired" to be a full-time mom and musician! Anyway, I think Emily's fans will be very pleased with this CD...I look forward to hearing opinions once it has made its way into the world. Remember, right now the only way to get FOUR WALLS BENDING is directly from Emily. Perhaps it was the venue - vocals were hard to hear, and there was a fan blowing on me all night. I missed some of the electronics from the Utah show as well. The album is quite good, though. > Amy X and Men were even goofier than usual -- they were all dressed in > sports outfits (Amy was a cheerleader; Herb Heinz wore tennis clothes; JT > Quillan III wore a jock strap on the outside of his trademark tuxedo) in > honor of their album title. It's great to see a band using theatrics to such a great effect. Again, a caveat - they weren't able to use their slide projections, which add some fun. Their CD is also great. J.
