Anyway, it was a wonderful show; Emily had warned that she and the band might be a bit underrehearsed but these guys are consummate pros, so they were obviously able to compensate for the lack of rehearsal time! Only one "old" song, "40 Mansions," was performed and she didn't even do all of her new material (I was a little sad that she didn't play one of my favorite new songs, "Big Mind"). That should give you some idea of how creative Emily is these days, despite the fact that she's got limited time for writing/performing thanks to baby Noah! The new material has a very electronic focus. This requires Emily to do a lot of messing around with complicated-looking equipment and disk drives before and during the show. She has what looks like a Syquest drive next to her keyboard. You can get an idea of how tricky this is by taking a look at her set list, which I've posted at http://www.interbridge.com/emilysetlist.jpg It includes all the settings for each song, and looks a bit cryptic (example: "BLACK SAND: K2 mix UP/WS UP/k2 show ch4"). The songs played were Velvet Eye, Sigh, Maybe So, 4 Walls Bending, Kingdom Come, Black Sand, 40 Mansions, "Emily Solo Song" (so new she said no one but Noah had ever heard it before!), Little World and Lead. My first impression is that a lot of the new stuff sounds a bit more "accessible" than what's on the first two albums -- not that Emily's going to get played on Top 40 radio anytime soon but I definitely think she'll win some new fans with this one. I especially like the moody ballad "Maybe So," the freaky vocal effects in "Kingdom Come" and the brand new song she opened with on Thursday, "Velvet Eye," which is positively hypnotic! I was riveted from the first note and can't wait to hear it again. By the way, 2 of Emily's demos were played on the KALW program she did a couple weeks ago, along with a bunch of songs from the albums. There was also an interview segment where she talked about her music. If anyone wants a copy, let me know via private e-mail. KALW doesn't have the strongest signal in the world, so the first 10-15 minutes are a tiny bit staticky as I was trying to place the FM antenna just right...then I discovered that if I actually held the antenna in my hand, with my arm up in the air, the signal came in perfectly. Unfortunately, this entailed me standing next to my radio with my arm up for over 45 minutes :) The sacrifices one must make...! Well, if anyone else saw the show or has any comments, by all means let us know. - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * www.interbridge.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 20:46:27 -0800 (PST) From: "Joseph M. I saw the show and it was fantastic! The new songs are much more electronic, with many synthesizer effects. The band was in great shape, despite not having played together in almost two years! Special props to Morris Acevedo, the guitar player. Emily said they'll be working on a new album, for mid-summer, and the enw material sounds great. J.
