I'm pleased to be making the *second* ever post to dream-gasoline, since Neal beat me to the punch ;) Anyway, Emily was performing at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco on Sunday, as part of a Christmas show featuring members of her former band, the Potato Eaters. Now, I'm definitely *not* a fan of Xmas music, and fortunately, despite the presence of a TV on the stage showing a video of a Yule log (a holiday staple on SF's Channel 20), it was not a traditional Xmas show. Unfortunately, my boyfriend Joe and I got there a little late so we missed Emily's first 2 songs. She told me she'd done a Joni Mitchell cover -- argh, I can't remember which song she covered! If I'm gonna do this mailing list thing right, I'd better start taking notes! Anyway, we *were* able to see her do 3 wonderful songs. She performed a new, never-before-played-in-public song that she referred to as "the New Year's Resolution Song." She followed it with "Big Mind," which pleased me, as it was my favorite of the new songs she debuted in concert before going on "maternity leave" in the fall of '97. It's a really gorgeous, haunting and emotionally intense number that should be one of the highlights of the forthcoming album. And then, she played "There Is A Rose E'er Blooming," a beautiful English hymn, joined by a few Potato Eaters. So far, it looks like most of the subscribers to dream-gasoline are on the East Coast, so I guess you'll have to live vicariously through my concert reviews ;) The next show is Jan. 27, opening for the always fab Amy X Neuburg and Men at Venue 9 in San Francisco. Emily will be playing solo and with her bass player, Andrew Higgins. She hinted at a possible gig with the full band sometime in Feb. but apparently her guitarist, Morris Acevedo, is very much in demand, so it may depend on his schedule... Since most of you are on ecto, you've probably been reading the "why isn't Happy famous?" thread...well, I think it's even unlikelier that EB will achieve any sort of mass success, since her music is so uncompromising and noncommercial, but I'm delighted that there are several like-minded souls out there who find her music as wonderful as I do! Hopefully she will find a large enough audience that she'll be able to continue making music for years and years to come. 'Til next time -- probably after the Jan. 27 gig unless there's some earth-shattering news to report before then-- - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * www.interbridge.com ------------------------------ End of dream-gasoline-digest V1 #2 **********************************
