Strings Attached presents Carrie Newcomer in a benefit performance for Urban Ministries of Durham, Friday, February 10, at 7 PM, in the St. Philipbs Church Parish Hall. Carrie has been telling stories and blending diverse musical styles for nearly two decades, influenced by bsinging poetsb as well as by the R&B and rock bnb roll she heard growing up within the range of Chicagobs radio waves. In addition to the loyal following she has developed over the years by incessant touring and performing in coffeehouses and smaller venues, she has gained critical acclaim in recent years in the music media (Rolling Stone, USA Today, Acoustic Guitar) and by sharing the stage with a variety of other performers, including Bonnie Raitt, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. She has played Carnegie Hall with Alison Krauss and Union Station, and raised impressive funds for charities as diverse as Planned Parenthood of America, The Nature Conservancy, Literacy Volunteers of America, The American Friends Service Committee, Habitat for Humanity, and various health and hunger organization. She won the 2002 Folkwax Album and Artist of the Year Award, and this year, was named Bloomington, Indianabs bWoman of the Yearb for her activism and contributions to her community. Tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under (childcare is available).
