Last night Catie taped a show for the World Cafe with Mark Erelli on guitar and backing vocals. We sat in the front row and totally loved seeing and hearing the songs and stories in such an intimate setting. She did St Lucy, Cross Over to Me, Hold On, Red Light, The Night, and Elizabeth. About Hold On, she told about finishing up a European tour in Italy where the audiences didn't really have a clue who she was, and suffering through some long distance miscommunication with her partner. She really wanted to come home early but finished out the dates. When she finally arrived in Paris to fly home, her flight was cancelled and nothing else could be found despite her best efforts to convince them that she had a very urgent need to fly that day. This was the birth of this song, though her one day delay in Paris turned out well in that she got to the hotel to find that Mary Gauthier was playing in PAris that night so she went and sang back up for her. Red Light was written to round out DIRL. She wanted something with a beat and she had an afternoon to come up with it, so she set some challenges: no use of the word "I", and the chorus and verse had to use the same chords, and no capo. She said when you set some limits it can be easier to write. The day she recorded The Night was the night before their daughter came home to them, so it took a meaning of anticipation of this wonderful event. I got a chance to talk to Catie briefly after the taping and she was so warm and approachable as I have always found her to be. I finally got Acoustic Valentine - I was waiting to get it when she came to town, not knowing how long that would be! I've found DIRL to be a album with a lot of depth. When it came out, it took several listenings to sink in to my brain. Now I seek it out for a truly statisfying listen. Of all the people I frequently rotate through my CD player, I'm amazed at how each Catie album has it own quality and I could not pick a favorite. Well, that's it for now. Hope you all get to see Catie soon! This list has been far too quiet with a tour going on!! I wish I were on the "other" coast right now so that I could catch the June 30 Boston MFA show...sounds like it'll be a kicker of a tour closer. Hope someone speaks up on here! I've been trying to figure out a way I can see Catie again this year...but out on the Olivia cruise in October!! Ha hahaha...no extra $3,000 in my bank accounts right now, so I think I'll miss that one, darnnit. Sounds like that would be a blast with Shawn Colvin and other performers as well as The L Word taping!! By the way...although this list is pretty quiet, if you're not already signed up, come on over to http://www.catiecurtis.net. We've been a bit more active over there and are always welcoming new folks! And email doesn't clutter your box either!! : ) Have a great summer everyone!!
