Were any of you there? For some reason, my usual mingling skills escaped me today, so I didn't meet anyone. I am unable to see the Slim's show tomorrow, so was thrilled when I learned of the Listener Party. Never having been to the Healdsburg Bar & Grill, I'd called ahead to ask the restaurant if it would be appropriate to bring my 10 year old son along, but they warned so many folks had signed up for this free concert, that they would likely restrict entry to those over 21. So today, I found myself running late, having dropped off my son at a friend's to play & watch Game 7, and as I ZOOMED north on Hwy 101, the host radio station played "Patience" so.... I took a couple slow soothing breaths and calmed my speeding vehicle down to 65. When I arrived in Healdsburg, most of the seats & tables had been removed from the bar to accomodate the anticipated crowd, and there were two uniformed police officers sitting at the corner of the bar, and I thought, "Jeez, crowd control?". When they left their bar stools I asked if they'd be coming back, and they said no so I claimed one of the seats for myself. As it turned out, the officer's were just grabbing a meal, and I think more than half the 300+ "listeners" who signed up decided they wouldn't lose if they flaked on the free admission and were no-shows (dumb, dumb, dumb) and there WERE many children in attendance, so instead of the over 21 sardine pack I was expecting, it was a real comfortably sized crowd and a rather family atmosphere with many folks sitting on the floor eating bbq'd burgers or standing. One sweet girl maybe 8 or 9 asked Catie to sign her cd after the show because, "[I] want to grow up and play the guitar just like you." Also in attendance was a cutie with face painted whiskers to whom Catie directed affectionate glances throughout Love Takes the Best of You as the bunny/kitten's mom gave her the kind of loving hugs & smiles that go with knowing "your" song is being sung. As much as I feel familiar with, and enjoy seeing the dynamic duo of Catie & Jimmy Ryan, the addition of percussion and bass were really wonderful and many of the songs seemed to match my memory of the album note for note. The 15 or 16 song set list was pretty much as Heather described with Catie most definately ROCKING most of the Shirt cuts (Kiss that Counted! Now! Shirt!). She slowed the pace with Elizabeth, Love Takes The Best, Patience, included several favorites like Memphis, Whassa matter, Soulfully, Magnolia St., 100 Miles, and performed two pre-show audience requests for The Wolf and Dad's Yard. Everytime Catie sings, "He can see pot-TEN-tial where the rest of us are blind" I feel my dad with me, though he's gone five years now (sheesh... FIVE already). That's exactly what he said ("It has lots of pot-TEN-tial") about the house my husband & I bought & still live in, and he was right. I also think of Tawni, who sent me that "Tawni's Folk Mix" cassette tape eons ago that included Dad's Yard and was my first introduction to Catie's music. Let us know how the "Tractor Tavern" show goes, Tawni! On my way home, with Game 7 still going (and no overwhelming need to interrupt my die hard Diamondback fan son's concentration on the game) and my husband & 12 yr old still out of town at a running event, I took my chances and stopped by Santa Rosa's Luther Burbank Center and with "patience" on my side, I eventually was able to buy a ticket to the sold out Maya Angelou speaking engagement. What a remarkable speaker and what an amazing presence! So, my heart is full - a wonderful afternoon of favorite music, followed by a wonderful evening of inspiration and poetry, my family now, tonight, all home safe & sound. Thanks to Catie for crossing the country & bringing the gift of live music to us all during a time when a lot of folks are feeling like sticking a bit closer to home & loved ones rather than traveling. Thanks to Elizabeth for her part in supporting Catie's touring. If Catie and the band are coming close to your town, don't miss them! Peace & good health, Heidi #12 ------------------------------ End of dads-yard-digest V3 #162 *******************************
