I've seen Catie perform for many years, since the release of TFL. This was one of the best concerts she's put on. I credit it to playing with a band. With the exception of Michigan Womynfest, where I saw her perform with a makeshift band, I've only see her by herself or with Jimmy. She had an incredible amount of energy on stage that made her songs come alive. I was not wild about her new cd, but after hearing the songs live, like it a lot more. I've also never seen her have so much fun on the stage. She had a new electric guitar (fender-strat., I think) and did a lot more rockin' with it. Come to think of it, she even did a lot of rockin' on her acoustic guitar. She opened with the full band (Jimmy, Jared on bass, and Billy C. on drums). Later in the show, she and Jimmy did a few songs, and then she did one by herself. . The only downfall was she couldn't play some requests, because the band didn't know them.. From my best recollection, here's the set list. Order is not exactly right, but close. PatienceWhat's the matterBicyle Named HeavenMemphisLove Takes the Best of YouI Still Want to The Big RepriseTroubled Mind (Her 3 song 'rock' set):MSLGOYDon't Lay DownSugar Cane Magnolia StreetElizabethRunning from Mercy (rickie lee jones cover; first time she's ever played it. What a great song.)Radical (request)HushDad's Yard (request)Kiss that Counted No encore. She announced that she was playing her encore songs and that would be it.I think she's done this before? It was quite refreshing, to be honest. Everyone gave her a standing O on her last song and that was it. As a last note, I was all set to record the show, but a huge sign posted said, "no recording."I personally didn't think she was against it, and have many bootleg cds to show for it. But I know the Ark puts it there per the musician's request. For those of you who've recorded at her shows in the past, did you get prio permission from Catie or the venue? How does this work? I have to say it was well worth the trip! Catie's set was relatively short, but absolutely fantastic! She had so much energy and every song was just perfect. She told a hilarious story about how she had broken her vacuum cleaner by running over the cord and that her family, who she just visited, insisted on giving her a vacuum they weren't using. She tried to tell them that it might not be easy to take a vacuum cleaner on the road, but as families can be, they were insistent. So she ended up taking the vacuum cleaner with her. She was saying how funny it was carrying the vacuum into her hotel and on the way out, feeling like she was offending the cleaning staff by bringing her own vacuum. It was hilarious. She also mentioned that she just found out that Hush is going to be featured on an episode of Felicity this season. The crowd seemed to be new to Catie, but really took to her. I heard several people talking during the break about how much they enjoyed her performance and several people were buying up CDs. Guess they are discovering what we already know! For those of you catching Catie with Dar over the next couple of weeks, I can warn you that at least at this venue they were checking hardcore for any recording devices. Maybe since Dar has a live CD out now? Who knows? Just thought I'd give the warning to you beloved bootleggers. I didn't write down the set list, but it was something along the lines of this: Patience What's the Matter Bicycle Named Heaven Love Takes the Best of You Kiss that Counted Elizabeth Now Hush Memphis That's it for me. Look forward to hearing more reviews this fall! Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 08:08:03 -0700 (PDT) From: j stack Subject: Re: [dads-yard] Catie at Ohio U Hi all. Saw catie last night in chicago, also opening for dar williams. Another short set, and the same story about the vacuum cleaner. But she was great. joan - --- "Hudson, Jeff ( WES )" wrote: > So I decided to make the three hour drive to see > Catie open for Dar at Ohio > University. I have to say it was well worth the > trip! I was cracking up from Jeff's description of the vaccuum story...I can totally picture that! Looking forward to find out if she'll be telling that here on the other coast...or maybe they'll have given her a snow blower or something by then ;) And thanks to Mark & Masaki & Deb ...and all of us persistent fans!...for getting Dandelion on the stealth site! Woo hoo! I'm a lucky owner of one of the original tapes, but will work toward downloading the cd to save that little tape for posterity! Keep reporting those show's y'all! Have a great weekend.
