I became a Kris fan a couple of years back when she opened for Catie when C.C.I.R was released. Kris has some amazing lyrics. For example, one of my favorite lines from a song on her new CD..."how can I carve your name in the trunk of a tree that will be here long after were gone. I can't even write it in the steam on the mirror." Great stuff! I think Kris D's music is less "pop" sounding than Catie's music of late. Hey y'all, I know that lots of Catie fans have worked as field staff and as organizers of events on their campuses and their communities, so I thought this would be a great place to go to gather some interest in helping to organize Ladyfest South. As many of you may know, over the last year, there has been a series of women's performance festivals, called LadyFest, in different parts of the country. The first one was in Olympia, WA, then there was one in NY and one in Chicago. There was also one over in the UK. From www.ladyfest.org: "Ladyfest is a non-profit, community-based event designed by and for women to showcase, celebrate and encourage the artistic, organizational and political work and talents of women. It will feature performances by bands, spoken word artists, authors, visual artists and more!!! It will include workshops, panels, and dance parties. This is a woman-run event but all are welcome to attend." We are organizing a Ladyfest South, to be held in Atlanta, probably in October of 2002. We are in the beginning stages of planning, and are looking for help organizing. No experience necessary. We need help publicizing and organizing, not just in Atlanta, but all over the South: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, Virginia, etc. We expect to be bringing artists and performers from all over the South, if not all over the country, so the organization will be broad based and not just centered around Atlanta. There is a discussion email list set up for the Festival. Announcements about meetings and other information will come through that list. Please subscribe by sending an email to: ladyfest_south-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please feel free to email me directly if you have any questions abou the festival or whatever. Thanks, and I hope to be talking to many of you soon! BLAME SALLY / Live: 4 incredible women from the SF Bay area Monica Pasqual, Jeri Jones, Pam Delgado, and Renee Harcourt. Website not quite ready yet, but stay tuned to www.BlameSally.com MARJORIE RICHARDS / Here: Seattle area singer/songwriter with well-crafted music and stories and a sweet soprano voice...just waiting for her to be able to get another CD out there! www.marjorierichards.com ERIN CORDAY / Painted Door, Secrets About the World: Bellingham WA artist and incredible songwriter and guitarist - and good people! Joel Litwin on percussion and back up vocals is sublime as the ultimate accompaniest and "straight" man. http://www.waterbug.com/corday.html KRIS DELMHORST / Oddlot, Appetite: Still waiting for my 'Five Stories', but all things considered lately, I'm sure I'll get it soon! www.krisdelmhorst.com AMY ROBERTS / Revelocity: Unfortunately this Seattle area artist doesn't have a website of her own yet, but I'm enjoying her first CD. It's just her and her guitar, but it's good, comfortable folk. You can check out a review by scrolling down this page a bit: http://www.kcts.org/productions/kctsconnects/archive/episode_64.htm ERIKA LUCKETT / Tinted Glass, My Little Crime: I haven't listened enough to the new 'My Little Crime' to get a good handle on it yet, but 'Tinted Glass' has been a standard in my player for a while! http://www.erikaluckett.com/ KRISTINA OLSEN / Truth of a Woman, Live Around the World: I LOVE this woman! She is funny, has a great voice, great songs, plays great guitar, and dances like nobody's business!! Unfortunately for us, she tours A LOT in Australia and Great Britian. Fortunately for her, she's got a huge fan base there. She lives in LA and I wish I could see her more often. http://www.kristinaolsen.com (under construction) or http://www.rounder.com/rounder/catalog/byartist/o/olsen_kristina/ EDDIE PENNINGTON & CARY BLACK / Just My Style: Just fingerpicking guitar and bass, but what sound comes out of this! It's probably a pretty unfamiliar style of indigenous guitar playing lots of folks on this list may not be familiar with...but if you're game to check out new genres of music, I highly recommend this. I've taken bass classes with Cary (why I got the CD) and watched him perform several times...he's awesome! http://www.eddiepennington.com/latest.html ROBIN FLOWER & LIBBY MCLAREN / 30 Second Kiss: Two incredible women! Robin started out on her own back in the hey days of the "women's music" scene and been going strong ever since! Her life & music partner Libby McLaren is one of the sweetest, funniest, and great souls I've ever met. Robin is multi-talented, playing guitar, fiddle and mandolin all incredibly well. Libby can play the piano and accordian like nobody's business. They are a lot of fun to listen to and put on a great show too! http://www.flowerandmclaren.com/ okay, okay....i'm stopping for now! whew! My 5-disc player currently contains: Catie, MSLGOY Dervish, Midsummer's Night Judybats, '00 (a near-permanent fixture in my player) Ellen Reid, Cinderellen Sharon Shannon and Friends, The Diamond Mountain Sessions Ellen Reid's debut CD is probably the best, non-Catie :-) CD I've bought in quite a while. Some of her stuff even has a Catie-like percussive feel, especially a beautiful song titled Force Field which is very much reminiscent (to me anyway) of Catie's writing (and playing) style on CCIR. Check it out! She used to sing back up for them and now she has been put out as a solo artist. I am absolutely blown away by her voice. Y'all should check her out.
