For Barry: Brenda Weiler did a short set, I found her voice to be very beautiful, and her songs thoughtful. The audience was very quiet, and was so the entire night, but very polite and receptive. I bought a CD of hers so that I can have a concentrated listen at home... Now, on to Catie...the show was great, with a full band, catie looked fabulous with blue jeans, a t-shirt with a flying chipmunk on it, and a leopard-skin head band holding back her curls, and her glasses. Catie said the flying chipmunk to her represented HOPE (in relation to the recent tradgedy)...as we all looked at her sort of puzzeled, she said that "ya gotta start small". The other reference she made to the terrorist attack, is that she glad it was sort of getting back to normal, that we were all here to listen to music, etc, and how she noticed that the junk e-mail she had been receiving had slowed down for about a week, but sure enough, those ads for penis enlargement began showing up again...she wanted to make sure she wasn't the only one getting those types of e-mails. I am taken with her face when she sings, the smiles and expressions make you feel as if she is feeling her every lyric This was the written set list with the line representing the encore... Patience (MSLGOY) Bicycle Named Heaven (MSLGOY) Don't Lay Down (MSLGOY) Soulfully (CC) Love Takes The Best of You (MSLGOY) NOW (MSLGOY) I'll Cover You (CCIR) The Big Reprise (MSLGOY) Troubled Mind (TFL) Kiss That Counted (MSLGOY) Hush (MSLGOY) What's the Matter (CCIR) I Still Want To (CC) My Shirt Looks Good On You (MSLGOY) Elizabeth (MSLGOY) Memphis (CC) _________________________ Magnolia Street (CCIR) Radical (TFL) World Don't Owe Me (CCIR) 100 Miles (CCIR) ...however it didn't quite go according to plan, she started with My Shirt Looks Good On You, and after Elizabeth she asked for requests, which a bunch were shouted out, the problem was, that the bass player and the drummer are not as familiar with her older stuff, in fact she was having trouble remembering as well, so she played a couple of things (which I can't remember what the were). Then she said that she was over the "Encore" and it was seeming more and more contrived, and they were just going to play and when they were done, they were done. So she played Magnolia Street and Radical, and didn't get to World Don't Owe Me and 100 Miles. So, My Shirt Looks Good On You songs were plentiful, which I didn't mind at all, and the older stuff was great. She signed autographs, and chatted after the show, which was fun! _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 11:14:30 -0400 From: johanna Subject: [dads-yard] catie shows... & guitar chords so, i never did get around to writing a more detailed report of the nyc show. i think i would've done a better job had i done it right away, but i do have a few more details to share... she was wearing that same chipmunk shirt! isn't it cute?? ^_^ another fluffy aside--i like her glasses a lot; they're the kind i wish looked good on me, but they don't. she also deviated fr. the set list--i was sitting right up front (like so close i could've untied her shoes if, uh, she'd been wearing shoes w/laces) & i asked her to play "you can always be gone" (thanks for whoever suggested i e-mail her w/my request--i couldn't find an e-mail addy for her, but then i saw that she'd played it @ an earlier show so i knew she was practicing it!). & she said she would, after a bit more w/the full band. & then she did the same thing w/taking requests, only of course she didn't get to them all. so i felt really lucky that she did my theme song! anyway, overall i think she & the band were really "on"--really lively & energetic, & i think the audience responded well to that. i felt, & i think the whole audience did, a big sense of relief @ having this wonderful, life-affirming, cathartic evening of music (that didn't ignore the tragedy either--she did address it). afterwards i did manage to talk to her a little & get her autograph on the set list (since i left my CDs @ home--i've never before been able to get autographs @ shows so i didn't bother!). i was disappointed w/lucy kaplansky's set, afterwards--she sounded so much more "hard rockin'" than she does recorded, & i thought her guitar player needed to calm down a little. *sigh* oh well, hearing "ten year night" live was worth it. i would like to add my plea to our friend who's been posting guitar chords... i haven't played guitar in a while but i feel myself revving up to give it another shot, & i would love to have more catie songs to motivate me. ^_^ thanks! johanna http://free.freespeech.org/sugoi oh it's ashes to ashes but always the ocean... -dar williams ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 10:14:55 -0400 From: Marcia Smith Subject: [dads-yard] Pittsburgh show hi all- Well, with busy schedules and a computer meltdown, if took me a long time to wonder why I wasn't getting mail from the Catie list. But with the new album out and Catie touring, I really wanted to get back in! Catie played in Pittsburgh at Rosebud on Sunday. What a wonderful show! It wasn't so well attended, partly because it got almost zero publicity. It was also sort of opposite a huge multi- band fund raiser for the Red Cross put on by WYEP (the station that plays Catie). They did raise about $20,000. But an evening with Catie was just what I needed right about now. In commenting on recent events and how people have come together in response, she told a story about being at Fenway Park and seeing some Red Sox fans hold up a sign that said "God Bless the Yankees." She said - now I really know the world has changed! The set list: Patience, Bicycle named Heaven, ( I love that song!) Don't Lay Down Soulfully Love takes the best of you Now I'll Cover You The Big Reprise Troubled Mind she then asked for requests and did these two before returning to her set list: Radical What's the Matter (yes there were a lot of women in attendance) Magnolia Street Kiss that Counted My Shirt Looks Good on You Elizabeth Memphis encore: 100 miles She had her band - Jimmy on mandolin, Billy on drums, and I forget the name of the bass player. The audience was very enthusiastic and Catie was in a good groove. It was so great to hear the songs live. Every time I listen to her new album I hear new things that I like. You know how with a lot of artists you definitely have albums that stand out above the rest? If I put Catie's albums side by side I am hard pressed to pick a favorite. Her last three maybe inch ahead of her earliest work, but between those three I can't say. And you know how with some artists, love them as you may, after a while you feel like they are just repeating themselves, and with a little less success? I don't see that with Catie either. While she does not introduce any big changes in style, still I find every album reveals something new. sorry I got lost, glad to be back Marcia Smith Pittsburgh - Spokane, and back to Pittsburgh ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 11:31:13 -0400 From: "Danielle Batey" Subject: [dads-yard] Earlier recordings Does anyone know where you can obtain a copy of Catie's earlier recordings? I am just getting into Catie Curtis and don't know which CD I should start with. I find this to be very important as to liking an artist. New isn't always the best way to get to know them. For example I went to see Ellis Paul open for Lucy Kaplansky and didn't know ANYTHING about her. Someone recommended that I buy "Ten Year Night" and then buy "Every Single Day" at the show. They hit it on the nose. I wouldn't have appreciated the new CD w/o the old one. All this to say thanks and what would you recommend? My impression of Weiler at the Birchmere was the same as the one I had of her first CD... not bad, but it didn't do much for me. I really like "Tease," though. She wasn't very comfortable on stage, but it was her first time at the revered Birchmere, so she was probably nervous. I'd say that she was received warmly, but not enthusiastically. Catie's set list was similar to the one just posted from Pittsburgh. The crowd was appreciative, applauding enthusiastically, but uncharacteristically quiet between songs... in the DC area, we're not only freaked out about what happened, but about what could happen yet. But Catie did a great job of addressing the national mood via her songs, emphasizing helping each other with "I'll Cover You" and "100 Miles" ("it's gonna rain/ it's gonna pour/ through sickness and worse/ can I love more/ you carried me/ when I fell/ can I carry you?/ can I love that well?") And "The Big Reprise"... I didn't realize how apropos it was until she played it: The church went down and it didn't go gently The burning steeple fell right on the main street The old stained glass exploded Pieces of Jesus at my feet Molten, broken Jesus at my feet What kind of god could let this be? What kind of spirit or trinity? What kind of god? What kind of friend? Did God let Jesus die again? In the name of faith and religion How much trouble must we witness? All the wars, hate and sickness Can't somebody's god fix this? Can't anybody's god fix this? What kind of god would stand by? What kind of spirit or lord on high? What kind of god? What kind of friend? Did God let Jesus die again? And it makes you wonder Why bother to conceive of anything greater than just what you can see when all that you can see is the church went down and it didn't go gently The beloved steeple burned upon the tar And so goes faith, falling breaking me open to my heart What kind of god would let this go? What kind of spirit or holy ghost? What kind of god? What kind of friend? Well maybe God let Jesus die 'cause we wouldn't get it otherwise The canyons and purple skies That's how you get to the big reprise Not like he is some guy sittin' up there and thinking "this is why" But maybe everything let's everything die To make us all more alive To love one another And be really present Right here, right now - -- Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\ http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 12:42:03 EDT From: Nursegrrl8@aol.com Subject: Re: [dads-yard] A Question/Annapolis In a message dated 9/26/01 11:57:38 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Barry.Lawlor@ssa.gov writes: > Looking for an answer. I am a huge fan of Brenda's. From memory (not in order), Brenda played Poor Me, Trickle Down, Fly Me Back, Pretty Face, a new song about her fear of water (it is on the new live CD but she sold out of them so I still have to go order it from her website) She played something else but I forget what it was... Love her voice! It was my second time seeing her. > > I am just getting into Catie Curtis and don't know which CD I should start > with. I find this to be very important as to liking an artist. All this to say thanks and what would you recommend? Crash Course in Roses is her best CD in my opinion. Last night she played Gave Me Love!!! My friends and I requested it. Back Story: My friends saw her last year in NY and asked after the show why she never plays it. She said she would relearn it in time for the next time she would be in Philly. Skip to last Fall when she opened for Dar Williams...My friends and I yelled it out when she asked for requests. Catie laughed and said she doesn't remember it. She played a few chords of it and laughed. After the show, she said she would have to relearn it for us. So last night she asked for requests, we yelled out Gave me Love. My friend with the loud voice begged 'we drove two hours to be here' which prompted an "Ooooooo" from the audience. Catie said that the only problem was that only one person on the stage remembered how to play it! Then she started playing it. She had to cue the drummer totally on what to do, it was hysterical. She said she would only play one verse and one chorus but the band got so into it (including bass) that she said to keep going! YAY. It was great. Needless to say, I would give my left arm for a boot of the show! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 12:50:41 EDT From: EliseL1383@aol.com Subject: [dads-yard] Boston show? Really enjoyed seeing her recently with just Jimmy at her side, and looking forward to her return to No. Cal. with her band! My contributions to best CD to get is Truth From Lies...if you can get a hold of the original indie release vs the Guardian release, all the better. It's earlier stuff, but it has a more basic, less produced sound. It's not a totally "rock" type sound she's moved toward...although I like this too! It just shows you the growth and development of her writing and music making. I'm biased because listening to that CD for the first time when it was first released was what sold me on Catie...I'd never heard of her before. Something about it touched my soul and I've been a huge fan ever since! About boots and old music...for those who are new to the list, I want to repost Mark's "Stealth Site" URL. It's a great place to hear, download, burn a good number of past concerts, etc. Thanks for putting that out there, Mark! http://www.mark.umd.edu/~mark/catie/ Although there is the disclaimer at the top of the page, I'll also add the reminder that this site is strictly for our list and our listening pleasure...these recordings are not to be bought and sold! If we all respect that and respect Catie's work, then we will be able to continue to enjoy these great glimpses! Maybe we can even get a couple of new, clean boots of the current tour up there some time! ...hint hint, nudge, nudge ; ) Well, look forward to continued comments on shows around the country! The other differences include the song order being totally changed around and the addition of The Wolf.
