Capturing her in an extremely confident and prolific place, the record reveals an artist who is truly in her creative groove. Opening track "Run" is a case in point. The song builds with a sense of urgency but holds back just a little bit, thus revealing a singer/songwriter who is self-assured enough to leave her listener wanting more. "Kiss That Counted" offers a great lyric as Curtis finds a new way to write about love. "You say, It must be 4 a.m. / And I say, If I dont kiss you now I will never sleep again. / Yours was the kiss that counted / The one that mattered / My life before me undone / This would be the kiss that counted / The one that shattered my defenses / Bringing me emotion and devotion." Elsewhere on the album, Curtis pays tribute to Mark Sandman, a Boston musician formerly of the band Morphine who died in 1999. Curtis said in a statement that Sandman inspired her to do less solo work and instead seek to collaborate more often with other musicians. Curtis has included her version of Sandmans previously-unreleased "Patience." "Dont Lay Down" is full of determination, while "The Big Reprise" is a vivid and emotional chronicle, written after a fire that destroyed a church in Saco, Maine. "Elizabeth" has garnered attention by the gay press as it expresses Curtiss first overtly lesbian lyric: " and so too, I move toward you / My love, Elizabeth." Though the reference has grabbed notice, it seems far less newsworthy than the overall lyrical and musical sophistication and confidence of this, Curtiss fourth album. Several talented musicians most notably her longtime sideman mandolinist Jimmy Ryan join Curtis on My Shirt Looks Good On You. Curtis, her band and producer Trina Shoemaker recorded the album at Dreamland, an old wooden church in upstate New York. The sonic character of the church and Shoemakers decision to hang microphones from the ceiling, capturing the ambient sounds of the room, give this album a musical depth and character that is the perfect holding space for Curtiss rich vocals and the songs outstanding instrumental textures. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ End of dads-yard-digest V3 #133 *******************************
