A discussion on the Dar list got me thinking. As many of you know (from my past indulgences) I am the Managing Director of a theatre in Boston called Centastage. Like so many, we are trying desperately to raise money to keep our doors open. Centastage is a 10 year old, non-profit, professional theatre company. We are one of the only theatre companies in the country that produces _only_ new work. In fact, we work exclusively with New England playwrights, so that playwrights can be intimately involved with the first production of their work. Producing new work is considered so risky that may theatre companies will not produce new work at all. This was recently a big discussion in the Boston community. Without new work being developed, the theatre will cease to be a really relevant art form, and we will face a world exclusively of revivals and classics (can be wonderful, but not enough). However, it is always a challenge to develop audiences for new work, especially in a town like Boston. (Hence, some of the cash flow problems.) On May 6th, we will have our annual benefit at Club Cafe (only $25 for finger food, some great performers, and a silent auction). Right now, we are collecting items for our silent auction. I was hoping that some of you out there might have something you?d like to donate. Each year we have everything from gift certificates to restaurants, to bottles of wine, to original oil paintings. The things that usually sell best are those things that you can?t attach a price tag to, like artwork. Thank you so for bearing with me. I know I can tend to go off, but it is something I am really passionate about. E-mail me privately if you would more information. Thanks, Joy Elyse p.s. We are currently accepting submissions for next season, so it you are a playwright living in New England, or you know one, check us out a www.Centastage.org. Better yet, come see Emerald City by John Kuntz, March 30-April 14 at the Boston Center for the Arts (617-426-ARTS for tickets). Details will be up on the website very soon.
