I've learned of so many wonderful new artists through the list and through such projects as "Respond." I can reciprocate by telling you about Teresa Kolo here in Houston. She launched her first CD, "Carapace," at Anderson Fair last weekend. I was attending a wedding so couldn't hear her, but a friend lent me the CD and it's very good. I think some or many of you will love it. TK has a website at www.teresakolo.com, though it's quite sparse at present. She answered my E-mail inquiry by saying that people can order the CD for now from the E-mail address given there (admin@teresakolo.com), and that, if you're in the area, it's for sale at Cactus Music and Video here (713-526-9272; 2930 South Shepherd, Houston, TX 77098). (Cactus had just five copies yesterday, and I bought one of those.) I don't know anything about her except what's apparent in the music. Someone said she may be a schoolteacher. She needs to list through "Ladyslipper" and such. I love the fact that TK has a song about Hazard Street here, such a great name for a street. I used to avoid driving on it. Thinking of "Respond," I can't wait for Lori McKenna's new CD, and Esther Friedman's seems to be available for only the lucky dogs in the Boston area. TK has an excellent sound, and below are some sample lyrics. In my E-mail to TK, I asked if it would be OK to post a few, and she said great. "Pretty" Now, I work at a place Where you got to be pretty In the most basic of ways And I believe my days are numbered All those pretty girls They sit at the bar when they're through Age 38 to 22 But they sure can work their pretty And they laugh in their complicity At the most inappropriate jokes And the owner brings them delectable dishes And free red wine, lots of free red wine And he presses up against them When his pretty wife isn't there And I save myself by cutting off my hair Cause he just don't get it My head scares him . . . . I had not seen [my old man] for some time He was on his way back from Peru First thing he said was "My God, what did you do to your hair? You look like a cancer victim! Oh, I always feel so good around my old man "Blow Biten Blow" [Read: "Blow, Bite 'n Blow"] Blow biten blow, blow biten blow, That's when folks pick you apart Piece by piece And you don't even know what hit you You just feel bad and ashamed . . . . I knew what was coming She said, "I don't know, I just thought You'd be leading a different kind of life And driving a different kind of car . . . And what has happened to your fashion sense and Don't you care about anything anymore? ["Blow biten blow" seems to be a term from Maya Angelou.] "My Mistake" Well, it was my mistake And it was a bad one It's been my regret And it's been a long, long one I'll spend the rest of my life Building me a bridge Tall and that odd shade of yellow Like the bridge you love Like the ones you love Wait, wait, here's some CC content. I still love "Dandelion" and find it some of her best work. Or this could be the beginning of the top tens for next year. Anyway, sticklers, please forgive.
