It was packed--about 40 people--and a great show. Apparently her west coast tour is selling out all up and down the coast. That's a lot easier to do when you select smallish venues (smart business move!) I saw her here last June with 3 others at the Tractor and while that show was good too, I much prefer the more intimate shows. (To make this have some Catie content and follow in that vein, my favorite Catie show here was at Bumbershoot a few years ago because it was very very small and intimate...) Tegan and Sarah are two nineteen-year old twins who are being compared to Ani, but who list Kinnie Star among others as musical influences. They have two records out, Under These Feet, I believe that's the title of the first one, only available in Canada, then This Business of Art, which I have been listening to constantly since I acquired it. I will agree they are similar to Ani in a few ways, but they've got a sound all their own and their sound is refreshingly layered for a rock/folk group. Their lyrics, music, and voices are all amazing. I'd like to say I haven't been this excited about an album since Catie Curtis' self-entitled, but Dar's latest, The Green World hasn't left my player yet. I haven't however, been this excited about finding an artist since coming across Catie, if that at all explains my enthusiasm for Tegan and Sarah. This Business of Art may be hard to find, I found it at my local public radio station, which airs the World Cafe, who have been playing a track of Tegan and Sarah's called "The First." If you're interested in hearing them, they've got a few sites, just go to a search engine and enter their names as so "Tegan and Sarah" If you have trouble with that, you can order it from my local radio station, check out: www.kumd.org Take care and keep talking about good music, Lynn - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 12:16:38 -0500 From: johanna Subject: Re: [dads-yard] Tegan and Sarah-no CC tegan & sara have a website @ teganandsara.com ;). i found them @ a woman's bookstore this summer... i agree, they are awesome! incidentally--does anyone know if it's pronounced TAY-gan (rhyming w/reagan) or TEE-gan? no clue. but yeah, the cd is fun & funky. i see the ani comparison, altho' @ the store i bought it fr., it was labelled "if you like indigo girls, try..." i didn't know the world cafe was playing them! I've been a fan longer than most people I know (since '94), but she's losing me. Can't stand the horn section, and the next release (actually to be sold as 2 separate CDs) features them heavily, as does the current tour. I'm not going to be a very happy camper until she scales back a bit again. >From: "Tawni T. Hoang" > >To me, Dandelion is a modest start. I agree. To me, both "Dandelion" and "From Years to Hours" are greatly inferior to her later releases (and I feel in good company since Catie clearly agrees ). Now, I can see how people might like "Truth From Lies" more than the eponymous CD or CCiR, due to the difference in styles. But I don't even consider the others to be in the same league in terms of quality of songwriting, singing, or production. >Someone mentioned Julie and Kate Wolf in an earlier post. Marian (hey >there) and I saw Erin McKeown last weekend and in the small book store >audience were Julie and Kate. Kinda neat to be in the audience with them. Those of you who like "Dandelion" and FYtH might like Kate's solo CD . :-) I liked Julie better with Laura Love's Band than with Ani's, but she's still cool (and really nice, too). Her CD would shock Ani fans... it's kind of lounge-y jazz (piano and vocals). According to this site , Julie toured with Catie, I'm sorry I missed that! - -- Deb \\ indigo@mindspring.com \\ http://www.mindspring.com/~indigo ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 12:47:09 -0700 From: Jessica Byers Subject: [dads-yard] Re: Erin McKeown/ Catie in Montana? hey i was at that tractor tavern show last summer too. it was good, but i do prefer one artist at a time unless its people who are touring together and have a musical relationship, as opposed to random in the round stuff. > I saw her here last June with 3 >others at the Tractor and while that show was good too, I much prefer the >more intimate shows.
