But I'm sure she's a great performer, especially given her obvious guitar, vocal, and songwriting/storytelling talent. Her "To the Teeth" CD is one of my favorites of '99. Songs "To the Teeth" and "Birmingham" are lyrical masterpieces, in my opinion, and "Freakshow", "Swing", "Cloud Blood", and "The Arrivals Gate" show her amazing instrument mastery and versatility. (She plays acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, bass, piano, "steel drum kit", and more.) I'm sure most Catielisters would (if they don't already) really enjoy Ani's music. "S. I was going to see Dar Williams on one of her very infrequent visits to Australia, Ani playing on the same bill was a bonus. She blew me away with her brilliant & energetic guitar playing, I have not seen anyone since who could play a guitar like Ani and not break all the strings in the first five mins. I only wish I had the chance to see some of the talent that you guys get to see, so my advice would be to go see her definitely! I've seen her nine times (more than any other artist I've seen live), and IMO her audiences get worse by the day. I probably will never see her again on account of this, but as a performer she is the best! I can certainly understand her position and fear that the uninitiated listener may not have the same appreciation for the early stuff as do die-hard fans (though I personally think that even her "early basement" recordings are simply wonderful). I chime in with Deb in hoping that everyone will follow Catie's wishes not to distribute MP3s of "Dandelion" at all. (I do hope Catie eventually puts "Street Shoes" and "Change Your Mind" on an "early years" CD for all to enjoy!) To me, Dandelion is a modest start. It's got a few gems, including the title track and Seesaw (that's a nice song), but it certainly doesn't affect me like Truth or any album following that. The album has Catie's trademark sincerety, but musically, I never liked the jazzy production style. Her voice sounds higher than I'm used to hearing her too, but that could be just the recording. Mark, I think "die-hard" fans might want to have it in their collection, but I don't know if I think it's something to spend too much money on or effort to get. Any other thoughts? (by the way, just checked Napster - no sign of Dandelion!) Someone mentioned Julie and Kate Wolf in an earlier post. Marian (hey there) and I saw Erin McKeown last weekend and in the small book store audience were Julie and Kate. Kinda neat to be in the audience with them.
