Enough chatting about podunk teams (okay...U Conn's not so podunk)...here in ACC country, the talent and excitement of our women's teams now equal our legendary men's teams. This Saturday at 7 PM is the season opener for the Duke Univeristy women's team and Coach Gail Goestenkors (Coach G!) as William and Mary dares venture to Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium. Following victories over UCLA and #7 LSU (avenging Duke's Sweet 16 loss to LSU last March) for the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF) Classic tournament last weekend in Albuquerque, NM, the Duke women's basketball team moved up two spots in this week's AP poll from #5 to #3--meaning that only Tennessee (boo) and U Conn (less boo) are ahead of 'em! This is Duke's highest in-season ranking--although, following the team's crushing defeat (yes!) of Tennessee and advancing to the National Championship game in 1998-99, Duke finished the season ranked #2 in the final poll. But with 10 letterwinners returning and one of the nation's best recruiting classes (including amazing frosh players 6-4 Iciss Tillis and 5-11 guard Alana Beard), Duke's season should prove its best ever. In addition to oh mighty Iciss, Duke has a 6-5 gal on the bench--both of whom can dunk, but who knows if we'll *ever* see that in actual play...maybe someday. [And yesterday Coach G signed two top recruits to join next year's team] Besides, Coach G is the best dressed coach in women's collegiate basketball...an underrated talent! And Catie roots for Duke (when not playing Brown or UConn...)...so there's your Catie content...those of you still on the tour schedule, request her (unfinished, I believe) tune "Basketball." Play on, Rebekah. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 08:29:01 -0800 From: "M.L. Naden" Subject: Re: [dads-yard] Please folks... I must confess, though I've lived in Seattle for years and years, I bleed blue and gold. Go Bears!!! (Cal that is). And speaking of "podunk" teams, those Cal Bears need all the help they can get (all the time )... I do think it's very cool though, that Catie is a B-Ball fan (and that some of you listers are too...)
