Amy, thanks! -- I have long been a fan of Fred Small, even though I have only seen him once, and that about five years ago. Umm, you are right, the content of the website is a little sparse. Please let us know when the new album is available. Fred fans will know he is now a minister. But he has found the time to do another album. His new website is www.fredsmallmusic.com, and it won't really have anything on it until the release of the album...but that is coming up very soon! >> Wow, this is exciting news. Back in the early '80s, when I was realizing I was a lesbian, but still playing the straight woman, I somewhere heard a song of his from his album "The Heart of the Appaloosa," titled "Annie," about a lesbian schoolteacher forced to hide her sexuality to keep her job. It is an incredibly powerful song, affirming to hear someone, anyone, sing about being gay (it was before I discovered the show Amazon Country on WXPN, and Ferron, and Catie, and Sonia, and Melissa Ferrick, and .....), but poignant in that she had to live a lie. Yet the does does include the affirming acts of holding hands in public when they go to the city, and being with someone you love. It is still one of my favorite songs, but I haven't heard it in a long time, because I have it only on vinyl. And, not to bring up someone's sexuality and turn all gossipy here, I seem to recall somewhere learning that Fred has come out, which is also very cool, if that's so. And if he is, it's a bit of an irony that he sang a song that many years ago about having to hide one's own sexual identity when he likely had to do the same in those less enlightened times. Hope everyone is well on this list. It's been so quiet. Back in the early '80s, when I was realizing I was a lesbian, but still playing the straight woman, I somewhere heard a song of his from his album "The Heart of the Appaloosa," titled "Annie," about a lesbian schoolteacher forced to hide her sexuality....... **For me, it was "Talkin' Wheelchair Blues". I use a wheelachair sometimes, sometimes crutches, but regardless, I constantly experience the things Fred sings about in that song. **I actually found out about his new project when I emailed him to tell him I had been using his song in lessons I do on handicap understanding. His music, and so many other folk artists songs, are just RIPE for use in the classroom! It is still one of my favorite songs, but I haven't heard it in a long time, because I have it only on vinyl. **I'll bet you could still get it on CD or tape! And, not to bring up someone's sexuality and turn all gossipy here, I seem to recall somewhere learning that Fred has come out, Deb **No, he's straight. He got married maybe 5 or 6 years ago...But he's actually talked about how people assume he is gay. Actually he is just a super powerful ally, which I would think could be even more powerful. He said in his last live album, that he's been feeling a bit like a gentile in Germany in terms of the gay rights movement..... he was talking about how people who are straight have an obligation to speak out and be heard. **I am a (straight) school teacher, and I make no qualms aobut the fact that while there are people who have religious reasons to think being gay is *wrong*, that everyone single person deserves respect and that any type of heterosexism, homophobic, bigoted actions or words are absolutely unacceptable in my presence. **Sorry to go on and on off-topic, but this is such an important issue to me. The mere thought that there are people who hate people just because of who they love is maddening. Warm prayers, Amy Amy E.
