I hope it means that everyone is just having such a jam-packed summer and can't find the time to write. I don't know if Deb or anyone else can confirm this, but I saw on the Dar Williams list that Catie will open for some Dar shows in September. Is this true? I know Dar is playing at a WXPN festival in South Jersey on a weekend in Sept, and also at the Keswick outside Philadelphia (a work night....during the Olympics; NO chance to take off work!) On another note, I don't know how much I've revealed to friends over the years, but my folks have not liked the fact I'm gay and we have had extremely little communication for more than a decade. And what we have had has been very superficial. Well, yesterday, my father called me to say my mother had a tiny stroke/incident. No apparent serious effects, so it appears she will be OK. But family differences over my life aside, I had to go over there. And maybe we can begin to make amends. But what was emotionally uplifting on the ride to the hospital was that, by happenstance, my tape of "Crash Course in Roses" was in the car, so I played that. It was nice to have a reassuring voice with me, but beyond that, it made me think of all the friends I've made from this list -- more than from any other list -- including my best friend. And part of my jam-packed summer was spent at Marian and Sylvia's in Western Massachusetts (they rock! and so did their house during an earthquake). So listening to "Roses" made me feel great to have all my friends in the car with me. Thanks for keeping me company, everyone! My 8 year old son has been recovering form an illness that's left him confined to a wheelchair for the summer. Music has played a big role in keeping his and my spirits up. And Catie is his favorite. He loves to sing "I will lay down my troubles. . .." And I think the music really lets him do so. Hope your mom has a speedy recovery. I'm relatively new to the internet, that is using email lists and bulletin boards. And, I have to say that, whenever I read what I see as very personal stories, I am always surprised. That is,that people are willing to share so much of their experiences with people they don't know. I thinks it's really a good thing to be able to do that. take care, joan (it's also nice to hear about the music and concerts too) - --- Rob Litowitz wrote: > Deb, Thanks for the uplifting note. Welcome... to the internet, and to this list (one of my favorites). >And, I have to say that, whenever I read what I see as very >personal stories, I am always surprised. That is,that people >are willing to share so much of their experiences with people >they don't know. For some people, I think the possibility of anonymity encourages a certain kind of self-revelation, but for most people I think it's the feeling of shared interests, a more personal community than the mere geography we share with our neighbors. There are some risks (I don't advise broadcasting home address or phone on these lists, although some people are comfortable doing that), but most of my closest friends are people I first met on mailing lists... I've hosted over two dozen overnight 'strangers' at my place when they visited the SF Bay Area, and several others have allowed me to crash at their home when I visit their city... some have even given me their car and home for the weekend (so I can play the tourist) while they go camping... it can be an amazing community! Of course, not all list-communities are as comfortable as this one. >(it's also nice to hear about the music and concerts too) And to be introduced to so many new artists... I first *heard* about Catie on another music list. Again, welcome... I think you'll like it here.
