Winter in Ireland and Scotland was a time for great celebration indoors - merrymaking, matchmaking, whiskey-making and general fun and mayhem - and all this is evident in the songs and tunes Johnny and Susan have brought together for this album. A SAMPLING OF WHAT'S ON A WINTER TALISMAN Whiskey was - and still is - a favorite winter drink of the Scots and the Irish. From the Gaelic mouth music tradition, the song The Drunkenness that Christmas Brought Us is from the point of view of someone who refuses to accept responsibility for their drunken state. This is coupled with Drunk Since Ever I Saw Your Face, which presents a refreshing, honest declaration of love. The exquisite Irish Gaelic love song Fair Molly Hollywood begins with the phrase I'll never drink again. A man realizes that because he indulged too much in drink, he didn't know what he had. He vows he'll do everything different this time, if only he can get his lover back. The Scots are renowned for their resilience and sometimes foolhardy bravery in the face of adversity. Johnny wondered what would happen if a vacationing Scot wandered away from his Alaskan cruise tour guide and came face to face with a huge hairy denizen of the wild in his charming and hilarious poem An Urbane Scotsman In Alaska. Waulking was an ancient Scots tradition in which women stretched and pounded a cloth which had been dipped in urine. The urine strengthened the dye in the cloth, and the stretching and pounding kneaded the fibers together so the cloth would be a warm shield against the highland wind and rain. A tradition of waulking songs developed as the women sang to entertain themselves over an evening's work. Johnny, Susan and Aidan present a waulking song A Winter Charm of Lasting Life with the lyrics: Bless the man who wears this cloth May he wounded never be From the bitter cold and frost May this cloth protection be 'A WINTER TALISMAN' US TOUR Johnny and Susan have in recent years been developing this program of music for the darkest days of the year.
