As always, an opportunity to hear great music at all hours and in all possible locations! One of the highlights was the chance to "catch up" with some of the material Susan has been doing since the last time I was able to catch her live (aargh! the Fleadh on Randall's Island ... in 1998). Only two too-short showcases, *finally* some of the titles I've been reading about on the chanting or ecto lists.! Both of Susan's showcases were well attended, with the Prime showcase room emptying out noticeably after her set. Susan was in good form both nights, accompanied by guitar and bodhran, as well as by Lindsey Horner on bass (yes, he's back from Belgium for the present) and Jon Spurney on guitars (acoustic & electric). The minor key & black angel of "Wheels of the World" - such dark yet glorious imagery! I think it was Michael (?) who said how well Susan's voice & "Son of a Preacher Man" fit together. Definitely! (once I had gotten over the surprise of hearing that song coming from Susan). Admittedly, my music-addled brains can't recall all the titles she performed, although I know Seven Cold Glories was in there, and the 2nd showcase included her cover of "Blue Moon". On Saturday night, Susan's appearance in the Sheila-na-gig showcase came at about 2 a.m., to a packed hotel room, and she was followed by a rousing set by Irish group, Lunasa. (as an aside: if you enjoy Irish instrumental material, look for an appearance by this group in your area - though I believe they're done with the latest tour). Two other updates - Upon her return to NYC, Susan was going into the studio to record the final vocals for "Bushes & Briars II" (When Seas Run Dry). The instrumentals previously completed include material by Lunasa, Johnny Cunningham, Aidan Brennan, Joanie Madden, and Jamshied, among others. Look forward to details about the recording & release in an impending Sheila-na-gig newsletter "Spin", the new Prime CD recording by NY Celtic-fusion group, Whirligig, includes a recording of "Through the Bitter Frost and Snow", with Susan on harmony vocals. Details on this record should shortly be appearing on one or more of the websites: Whirligig ( http://whirligig.org/ ) or Prime CD (http://primecd.com/ ).
