My opinion about Kila fell into the middle ground. It's not possible to dispute anything that any of them said. I really liked the Kila's bass player and the young woman with the violin's work was very enjoyable. I told Paul on the trip back to New York that the bodrhan player put me in mind of the bad end of a bar fight. During the denser portions of their performance a conductor with a bull whip and a muzzle might have given things more focus. Some of bodhran-boy's vocalizing sounded to me more Yiddish than Celtic. While overall I enjoyed them, I would have preferred a longer set from Susan, tipping out and getting back to the city at a more reasonable hour, then catching them at Arlene's the following night. Susan's show, as always, was mesmerizing. Going in I was concerned that she might be spent from her day in the sauna that the Fleadh must surely have been. On the contrary, she was radiant, her voice spot on. Catherine Bent's work near the bridge didn't have Michelle's pixie on a lilly-pad lightness but I suspect it just was in hiding. Each time I see Jon Spurney I enjoy his work more, while Paul may not have been wrong about what he said, I was impressed by his subordinating his work to the material, both in style and in volume. While Greg Anderson may be most suited to Susan's more traditional stuff and Chris's sympatico with Michelle and Lindsay made him ideal under the old configuration, where Susan's music seems to be going, Jon may be the man.
