Now here's the longer version: I went to the Cranberries concert tonight at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, PA. It was their third show in the US, and as Dolores said "It's good to be able to speak English again." I was very impressed with the solid mix of old and new songs that was lacking from their last tour. The venue was small, maybe 2000-3000 people. I was sitting towards the front, at around the tenth row or so. Suprisingly, the show was not sold out, and as it happened I ended up with most of the row to myself. Very similar to the first time I saw the Cranberries back in Houston, Tx in 1995. Flickersticks (?) opened up, and about all I can say about them is "loud." Too loud. I couldn't understand a single lyric, and everysong seemed to blend into the next. Wasn't very impressed with them to say the least. It took a long time to get the stage set up for the Cranberries, and suddenly the house lights went down, then the stage. The crowd erupted, and eventually the 'berries appeared onstage. As usual, the boys went out first, along with the two guys in black, and finally Dolores came out, dressed in a burgundy jacket and a black miniskirt. She was also wearing a mask with a feather right down the middle. Somewhere in the first few songs she lost the jacket, revealing a spaghetti strap top in the same color as the jacket. I believe she took the mask off somewhere around Time is Ticking Out. Here's the set list for the beginning: Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Zombie Animals (new song?) Time is Ticking Out Animal Instinct Dreaming My Dreams Ode to My Family Just My Imagination Loud and Clear Desperate Andy Highlights included Zombie, Dreaming My Dreams, and Ode to My Family. Zombie reminded me why I loved the Cranberries in the first place. Raw, angry, vibrant. Dreaming My Dreams is still my favorite song, and I can't forget all the still moments when I listened intently to it. Ode to My Family just brought back many many old memories. At this point, Dolores changed again, this time in a black catsuit (well, sparkly top and black pants) with a burgundy feather boa tied around her waist. As always, we got a great introduction into "Pretty." Damn those bass notes are incredible. And somewhere in between, Dolores kept alternating between guitar, keyboard, and nothing. The rest of the set is as follows: Pretty Daffodil Lament I Can't Be With You Sunday When You're Gone Free To Decide I Really Hope Salvation Ridiculous Thoughts By this time, the volume was going up and up and the sound became muddy. On the really strong notes, Dolores's voice was distorting in the PA, a sure sign that it's being overdriven. I wish they'd get a better sound guy. In all honesty, the sound rig they brought was more suited to an outdoor stadium than a closed concert hall. If you don't want your ears to be ringing, bring some suitable earplugs. I absolutely loved Ridiculous Thoughts. I could tell the boys are getting older, as Noel wasn't jumping through his chords like he used to, but the band really kicked it up for this one. And finally, after a very, very long delay, the band came back out for an encore. Dolores again changed into a long skirt and the same spaghetti strap top to finish off the night. Some of the song selections are pretty predictable: This is the Day Linger The Concept Chocolate Brown Promises Dreams Linger was the high point. Absolutely beautiful. She said chocolate brown was written when she was very pregnant with her daughter and she couldn't go out and play with her son. Promises seemed familiar, but was too distorted to tell. Dreams was unusual in that Dolores didn't start out by yelling "Dreams." I was quite impressed. Overall, the crowd was very active, everyone was standing up the whole show, singing along, and dancing. I definitely am glad I went. If you get a chance to catch the Cranberries this time around, do so. You won't regret it. Anyone else going to any of the shows? Are any of the winners for the other cities on the list? If so, I would love to hear about anyones experience so I know a bit about what I can expect. Hoping of course to get a few things autographed. Great review Greg. Nice to see some activity on the list. - -Eric ------------------------------ End of cranlist-digest V5 #20 *****************************
