Thats hilarious! I was thinking the exact same thing. You made a pretty good analysis (no pun intended) of The Cranberries too. Wake Up has some really great songs. My favorite has to be Do You Know. Fortunately for me, there isn't all that much network usage that time of the morning. I logged into a server at uni... The uni has something like 200Mbps, and with virtually no one else using the connection, I had the entire album downloaded there in under 5 minutes. It then took another 10 to get it down the cable modem to my computer here at home. While one song was downloading, I was decoding the previous one, and had a copy burnt before I left the house. I've listened to it a couple of times now, and I'm quite impressed. Eric, you said that the previous two albums were experimental and this is more like the older ones... I'm not sure I agree with you there... Yes, they have gone back to mostly softer songs, but in terms of sounds it's like nothing we've had before. There are a lot of sound effects, a lot more keyboards and songs like WUASTC are quite different to the norm melodically and rhythmically. I do agree there are some songs that are similar to older stuff (the obvious comparison in the overall sound between Analyse and Dreams for example), but the first comment that came to my mind is that _this_ album is somewhat experimental. This is probably because I have friends who are into what they call "sonic art", which is using weird sound effects to create what vaguely resembles music. They are what you would call truly experimental, and so when I hear the berries who have traditionally been very much "instrument" based (yes, I realise synths and samplers are technically instruments as well) using electronic additions to their sound I call that experimental. I'm quite surprised with The Concept. While I'm almost certain the rhythm section is indeed just the drums and bass being played, it sound very much like a loop. Quite funky... Oh, and did anyone else notice that the melody of the verse of This Is The Day is almost identical to that of Zombie? And the rhythm guitar sounds a lot like Promises... Combining two leading singles... :) The lead guitar parts seem to be a bit more impressive on this album as well. Yes, indeed, I'm very impressed. Great album. Does this mean there's not gonna be any revival of Yesterday's Gone? Hopefully a b-side. I really love that song, and would like to see what they would do with it (for starters if it would remain acoustic)... Cheers, Joe. Musically the first albums were fairly straight forward. As you stated, the use of keyboards and electronic components give this album a different sound. No argument there. There is no getting away from the fact that they are growing as artists and as musicians. This time however their roots are showing. - -Eric ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 02:08:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Kelly Murphy Subject: Re: %Cran: ... first impressions The new songs are great! I can't wait for their live show. Whats with the little talking before that one song? Dolores says something like she's ready, and says "OK" to Don. I wonder if that'll make the "final cut" - Has it ever been discussed HOW and WHO we got this pre-release from? Who leaked it? And I hope we're not gonna piss off too many people over there at Camp Cranberries for already passing the tunes around. Anyway, all in all, a great new CD, I'm thrilled with it! From what I've seen and read the band probably won't mind but the label will. Although, I've been going on the assumption that most of the fans here will actually still buy the album when it comes out... I know I will simply because I collect. How many of you that've downloaded it still intend to buy it... Would be interesting to see the answers to that question... Cheers, Schmidty.
