Subject: RCMP Advisory 6 - Netscape Vulnerability Advisory No: RCMP-GRC/TSB 2000-006 Date: August 8, 2000 Advisory Type: Netscape Vulnerability - Brown Orifice Threat Level: Medium Systems/Platforms Affected: Windows-based and Linux-based Systems running Netscape Browsers 4.5 to 4.74 with Java enabled DESCRIPTION: Computer experts and media sources are warning Internet users about a dangerous new flaw in Netscape's Communicator and internet browser software (versions 4.5 to 4.74) that lets hackers view and retrieve files on a victim's computer or office network after the victim visits a web site or opens an email. This new Netscape vulnerability was published recently by a security expert Dan Brumleve and posted to the BugTraq mailing list last Friday night. In his message, Brumleve released an example of the vulnerability and called it Brown Orifice, an allusion to the infamous computer hackers tool Back Orifice. Brumleve explained that the applet could be imbedded in any Web page; if a surfer accesses the page using a Netscape browser, the applet will run in the background, surreptitiously providing access to the computer's files. Worse, the applet can be initiated through an email message that are read using Netscape Mail. A spokesman (Andrew Weinstein) for America Online Inc., the company that now owns Netscape, said that engineers were evaluating Mr. Brumleve's claims and will fix the problem once they can reproduce it. Customers can protect themselves for now by turning off Netscape's ability to run Java programs. To report any incidents of this nature, contact the RCMP either by email at incident@seit.com or Heather Riou at (613) 993-7407. For 7 day / 24 hour technical support, please contact the RCMP NOC at (613) 993-4460 or CSE at (613) 991-7654. This advisory is available on our website at http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/tsb (french to follow). RECOMMENDATIONS: The RCMP advises departments with Netscape users to consider disabling the Java programming language in their browser. To do this start Netscape and click on Edit - -> Preferences -> Advanced. Deselect the Enable Java and press OK. You must restart the browser in order for this to take effect. Also watch for updates from Netscape and your Anti-virus vendor to add protection and detection for such malicious applets. CSE is presently performing an analysis of this vulnerability, and their findings will be posted with this advisory later this week.
