["The Vine" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 15:44:09 GMT From: "The Vine" Subject: %Cran: As promised.... Hello everyone! A few ages ago, I promised a full concert report of the Dublin gig, which the Cranberries gave on April 29th at Dublin Castle. Well, I finally got time to do so, so here we go :) And where do I start? Even though it has been over a month ago we attended the show, it still feels like yesterday and I am trying to decide what to leave out of the report to make this email not too long... So I will just cut to the chase as you wanna hear e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g about the concert without too much 'blahblah' in between :) So the concert was on a Saturday, outside Dublin Castle. Everybody was kind of hoping that the weather would be good that day, as Esparrago wasn't long ago and that concert was cancelled and stuff. Well, the morning started out great with just nothing but sunshine, so that was good! For the fun of it, my friend and I decided to take the guided tour in Dublin Castle, to hear all about the history of the kings, the castle, the city and everything. We really had a good time while doing that, because even though we were told some pretty interesting things, we just knew real history would be made that evening outside the castle, when our all time favorite foursome would perform there. It was just really funny, looking at all the beautiful paintings and then take a peek outside to see a huge stage being prepared for the show... it was quite a contrast I tell you! :) The concert itself was very well organized. It was actually a festival of three days, with three different artists headlining an evening. I believe the Cranberries were scheduled on Saturday and Tracy Chapman (who is a real good artist as well!) on Sunday, but I am not sure about that and I can't remember the third artist either...Nevermind! The concert was attended by some 4000 people, as more wouldn't fit on the inner court of the castle. So even though it was being held outside, it was quite intimate. The inner court was divided into two area's, with a small corridor in between, which made it more easy for the security to keep an eye on things. So basically it was a matter of being in the front of the queue when the doors opened, to be able to end up in the first area close to the stage. It was quite remarkable that running wasn't allowed. I know it isn't in many concert venues but you always get away with still doing it, whereas here, you would have a security guard shouting at you and trying to grab you to slow you down again. So obviously, I had some people shouting and grabbing at me, but ended up at the front row without anyone getting to me anyway, LOL!!! Their opening act was an Irish young band of four guys called Embrace. They were quite good and cute alright, but I believe it's safe to say I am not the only member on this list who would like the berries to have no opening act at all... to shorten the waiting and decrease all the nerves :) It was quite remarkable that the setlist of Embrace was quite long. I believe they performed for almost an hour, or at least, it felt like an hour! But they were alright, so we didn't mind at all. What did you guys think about all their opening acts anyway? Did you all enjoy The Hormones, Andreas Johnson and who where the others? So I guess you all know what happens after the opening act right? Well, then there's no need to tell more, LOL!!! But I will do so anyway... the first thing to be noticed was that the band had changed it's intro music... I read somewhere that it was being described as 'oriental' and I have to agree with that! Personally, I think their previous one got the adrenaline going faster, but I don't mind getting used to this one either, it was cool :) (And you can't blame the band for changing it after a year either, they must have gotten sick of hearing it over and over again!) So they started out with Promises, a song that as always, rocked! As you all might know, the day of the concert was the day of Mike's birthday...so while spending a long time waiting for the doors to be opened that afternoon, we had made this (what's it called in english?) 'sign' congratulating him with his b-day and it didn't take long for him to notice it during the first song of the concert. It put this really cool shy 'Mike-ish' smile on his face which I not soon will forget. Of course right after that, he went on with playing his guitar, fully concentrating on the show as always :) The setlist hadn't changed much, with the only difference that they had left out quite a few songs, which made the concert a lot shorter than we'd expected to. 'Sunday' has always been a favorite of mine, which unfortunatley, they didn't play. Also, 'Pretty' and 'Dying In The Sun' were left out this time. I assume they left out those two songs because it was a festival-stage and they couldn't bring the big piano and all the lights and smoke-thingy's with them. Although I would definately have enjoyed those songs without the 'special effects' anyway! During that show, they did play You & Me though, and I am glad they did, as it was one of the highlights and one of the most brilliant songs Dolores has ever written! I am wondering why they left it out on the last couple of concerts, has anyone got an idea about that? Maybe because they are playing festivals with a slightly different audience, they made the setlist more 'rocking' or something? Well, then it's definately good to play Delilah :) It was weird seeing them play in the daylight, if that doesn't sound all too funny! The concert started out while it was still light anyway, and then gradually, the evening fell.... that was one of the things that made things, in it's one way, very special. Also the surrounding of the castle and everything, gave a really special feel to the concert. Overall, the band looked great. I know there have been some people worrying about Dolores as there turned up a few not so flattering pics on some homepages recently, but I still think that was just an unfortunate combination of the lights and poor quality of the camera. And maybe a bit of fatigue from two years of touring, which is understandable, so it's cool that the band is on a small holiday right now. But here's just to let you know that during that concert, Dolores seemed more alive and kicking then ever :) And that is always the one thing I make myself really sure of, before enjoying the concert and cause myself to loose my voice while singing and jumping around, probably looking all silly :) I guess this is the part where everybody is always describing what the band was wearing, but I am afraid I cannot remember. It's always the first thing I forget really, LOL! However, I do remember Dolores was wearing her make-up like in the Calvin Klein-campaign, using the colour black this time. It looked quite cool, but it always makes me a little bit afraid as well, as it always makes me think she is angry or something. Which she definately wasn't, as the crowd was receiving huge smiles from her constantly. Oh, and she was wearing some really kick-ass shoes (the kind you always like to have but never seem to bump into in the stores, lol!!!) but that's all you can ask from me concerning this topic! So on with the next... the band seemed to be really concentrating on what they were doing and that payed off, as they sounded brilliant in every song. Dolores' voice was extremely beautiful while singing Waltzing Back, and during Go Your Own Way they all gave everything they got, I've never heard such a good version as right there and then. So even though the concert was a bit short, we really enjoyed ourselves and hope you will as well!! Anyhow, this is all I can think of right now, but if you have some questions concerning the concert, feel free to ask and I'll answer them in the best possible way I can. Also... I really hope more people start to send concert reports to the list again, like we did when the Loud & Clear tour had just started in '99. It always was so great to read about the concert experiences everyone had troughout Europe and America, and I bet it still is! So for all those of you who attended the unannounced show in Sweden, or that festival in Germany on June 1st, and I believe there has also been one in the Czech Republic, please take some time out to send a report as I believe it's one of the main reasons people are member of the list :) Also, it kind of surprised me nobody sent a message about the cancelled show in Germany on June 3d, the Woodstage Festival was it? Did nobody attend it then? Fergal stated in the update, 'as many of you might already know'.... but we all actually didn't know the show was cancelled! Does this mean the band is losing it's fans, or this list is losing it's members? Anyhow, I hoped you enjoyed reading my contribution and hopefully there will be a lot more reports soon, Jessica ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of cranlist-digest V3 #111 ******************************
