Blood, when inside the circulartory system is blueish, not red. You'll notice this when you look at the veins/arteries in your arm. The hemoglobin in red blood cells is what contain the iron. As soon as blood makes contact with oxygen, it turns red. This is also shown when iron itself is left exposed to oxygen for a time -- it rusts, turning red.
