Well maybe you can start ... ;) later, Dal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 17:01:43 -0500 From: Dal Subject: %Cran: two discussion questions okay I have 2 questions that I was wondering about: Suggested TOPIC: music style change or not?/ attachemnt to certain style of songs/music/lyrics / ... 1- would the cranberries first album(e..w) and possibly second album(nnta) be considered depressing? someone said the music was but I really enjoy it. So what would you say the difference is in the music (or maybe lyrics)? Also TTFD was more depressing in a sense yet many of us didn't like it too much while BTH was considered more of a happy album and many of us still prefer the first two. why is that? I find myself attracted to certain songs on the latter albums(the icicle melts, electric blue eyes) whereas the first ones were more uniform style? suggested TOPIC: relating to songs/ more specific target audience/ ... 2- could it possibly be that some of us may not like BTH as much because we cannot relate to some of the songs anymore? For example- FeFiFo OR the song she wrote to her son may not seem as appealing as Zombie or Linger. I just realized this now but Dolores used to write in such a way that people can relate it to their own experiences or can feel emotions for the issue or story. Now her approach is possibly more direct or more personal to her own experiences and possibly more limited to a specific target audience (mothers, victims of abuse) Am I just referring to certain songs on albums and making generalizations or is it really mostly of a certain approach? please tell me your opinions and it would be interesting to see how the songs affect people in different ways. If you can relate directly to a certain issue or particular song (eg. mother, war victim, ...) please mention it if you are comfortable with announcing it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 21:54:08 CST From: "Leanna Jenkins" Subject: Re: %Cran: two discussion questions I agree with much of what you're saying. The first two albums are by far much more meaningful to me, probably because I can relate to the songs more. I like bth but many of the songs are not something I can relate to. When I first starting listening to the Cranberries (six years ago or something) the main comment I got was that people wondered how I could like something so depressing. This really took me by surprise because they were what I listened to when I was depressed because they were comforting to me. Maybe the Cranberries seem foreign to people who don't understand the songs. Personally ttfd was more depressing to me. This could have something to do with what was going on with Dolores at the time that may have been reflected in her songs. They were never really popular here, in fact nothing from bth was ever played on any of the radio stations except that they had a listeners poll on Promises, which failed. But does style have to change? I have wondered that myself. It is true that it may have changed in ways to target specific groups and I think it is human nature to not stay in the same place, but i dont think that the spirit of something has to change. Thats my input for now. I can see some similarities with Oasis in their style and in a few of the songs, the attitude that they give off. But really there is nothing that quite compares with what the Cranberries have. They really are a truly unique group that is not like anyone else and I know thats why I have continued to like them for so long. >From: Dal >To: cranlist@smoe.org >Subject: Re: %Cran: Why The Cranberries aren't too well-liked by the Media >(my theory anyways) >Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 16:57:48 -0500 > >Just wanted to say thanx for taking the time to write back and everything >Alot of you had some really good points- thanx for bringing them up >I guess it's once in a while that I get the inspiration to write something >that long, especially at 3am but hey! that's when I get all my ideas and >feel I could think more clearly about stuff >anyway, we should try to have more discussions like this about different >issues >I can't really think of any right now but maybe we can talk about what we >look for in music... >what other music we've gotten really into, especially during the long >cran-break? >and possibly see what those bands have in common with the Cranberries?!! >questions to let us think, anazlyze and observe ... >Well maybe you can start ... ;) >later, > Dal > ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of cranlist-digest V3 #3 ****************************
