The starting point: Scottsdale, Arizona. My intent: Front row. My modus operandi: Any means necessary. Here's a rambling, but abridged narrative of my quest to see the Cranberries and the finding of something unique inside of myself that I had thought lost. It started out at 7:30am and five hours away from where I would end up later. I dragged my sorry keyster out of the warm solitude of my bed only to put off leaving until my snooze bar awoke me again at 7:39. After deciding I had to get to Vegas most expediently, I grabbed my gear and I headed out my door and onto the open road. I don't know how many of you have driven the lovely desert roads of this fine Southwestern region, but I would severely recommend that you bring along enough music, food and gas to prevent your skull from melting out of your ear lobes. The drive was arduous, but the whole while I remembered back three years ago when I flew to Chicago and saw the Berries play at a local chi-town amphitheater. I remember being labeled the "Super-Fan" by the local Greenpeace volunteers and having a bracelet made with Noel and Dolores' guitar balls which, by the way, some here on the list can happily say they have as well. (Just make sure you know who helped get them... ;-) ) I remember buying everything that they were selling and just pimping-out big time. It was a salacious and sinful indulgence most akin to going wild in a candy store, but dammit, I loved it. I also remember that the show was excellent, but my seats sucked and Dolores was looking very gaunt and had knee brace, which inhibited her vitality on stage. The show left me feeling odd and I wanted it to be so much more. The Vegas show had to be better, I thought. It had to be. I arrived in Vegas at 1:17pm and with the eighty-two degree sun shining distantly in the cloudless sky, I hoped for a good day as well in line. There is a funny thing that happens when you have to stand in line for a general admission show. If you are a Fan-atic, like I am, you get this shivery feeling in your spine when you think to yourself that if you don't make into that line as quick as you can possibly be there, someone else, or even worse, many more people will have a place better than yours at the show. So, with that motivation building up as the 276 miles rolled under my wheels approaching Vegas, it hit a fever pitch when I finally entered the parking lot and found myself bounding for the venue, The Joint, inside the hotel. As I careened around cocktail waitresses and shimmied around desperate looking shells called gamblers, I felt my tingly spine practically snapping though my back. I rounded the corner where I saw the front doors of the place, and I immediately saw the box office guy standing at his desk. I asked him where the line started for the show and he kind of gave me a look and said, "well, seeing how you're the first one, wherever you want is fine." What a response! It was very groovy to know that I had the first spot, but all was not well in Wonderland as I found out six hours later. During my tenure as Lead Line Guy, I answered many inquires from passers-by who all ineffably asked, "what Chu waitin fer?" My response: The Cranberries. They usually said something along the lines of, "wow. They're good. You're early." Thanks chief. Without your pointing out the obvious I might not have actually realized that. *Line tip #1: you will be asked stupid questions like these not only when standing in line, but throughout your life as well. After making great strides in reading the new Ben Stiller/Janeane Garofalo novel, great great writing and very funny, six o'clock rolled around but the line as well had made its way from where I was to the outside where many dozens of people were anxiously awaiting entry. Here's where my day starts taking a turn for the worse. As the goons and jamokes who call themselves security were setting up the ropes to let us feeble and mentally disturbed(hey, I drove five hours and waited six hours in line, what would you diagnose that as?) fans in, I noticed a new line forming perpendicular to ours. It started out innocently enough, but I then decided to ask out of growing uncertainty when I saw people starting to fill into it. I asked, "so, what's with the line in front here?" The 'Roid King looked my way and said with an almost gleeful smile, "they're V.I.P.'s." I joked with him, pushing away the nagging feeling in my gut when I asked, "so, what, do they go in before us here in line?" He almost took sinister pleasure in say, "yeah....they do." Sure enough, before my eyes, the line of a few people blossomed into 23. (Yes, I counted) This probably drove me wildly out of my mind, and when they finally let us in, the people in the front of the V.I.P line were a gaggle of 16 year-olds who were pointing at us and laughing. Did this disturb the Hotty Meister? Oh yeah. I wanted to pummel them with a can of Spam, but when they finally let us in, and as I saw the last of the Vipps go in, I literally stormed towards the front as if I was running away from the Fashion Police. I managed to secure a front position and I was right next to a concert yuppie and his girlie. For those not in "the know" a concert yuppie is an anomaly of the concert going experience. They are a rare breed of animal that go to concerts in their "nice" clothes and look as if they have just come from a board meeting. The guy standing next to me was about 40 something and he was wearing a tie. It was a really odd thing, but hell, if he wanted to stand in the front and get his clothes all mussed up, que sera, right? After I sized up my standing compatriots, I realized I could touch the stage from where I was standing. Oooooh. This was getting better by the minute. After a semi-groovy set by Jude, the real show started as the lights went out for a second time and Dolores and company took to the stage. It's here that I digress for a moment as I want to say something very superficial and base, but something that I know a lot of us were thinking years ago. When Dolores appeared on the stage I noticed two things: 1) She cut her blonde locks where it looks just like it did circa EEIDSWCW and colored it back to its brown state. It looked so good. 2) She put back on the weight that had been missing from last we saw her. She looks like a normal woman. She always did, I know, but I mean she looks so vibrant and alive with healthy pleasure. As she strolled across the stage for Promises I knew this was going to be a great show. It was. Through the entire set, I was standing in front of Noel and his electric guitar. He was wearing deep blue jeans with very nice Nike shoes and accompanying blue Nike swoosh T-shirt. I don't know if it was me or whether it was him, but everytime we locked eyes, he looked away immediately. I swear I wasn't making funny faces, but I did get a smile when I gave him the pointer/pinkie up, pointer/middle down thumb holding, devil pump with my hand. I think he found that funny. It was the truth, though. Noel was rocking out with his head twists and body rocks throughout the show. Especially through Wanted, he gave the song some added oomph as he really played out the guitar breaks. Fergal was spectacular. He played those drums like I have always known he can. With such precision and violence, he put in a good show. Highlights included him getting the young teenage girls to howl when he took off his shirt mid-set. You have never heard what hell sounds like, but I am sure the soundtrack sounds like squealing 12 to 16 year-old girls. Fergal put a lot in Daffodil Lament, Zombie, Salvation and Dreams. Props up to him. Mike, well, is Mike. He has this cool way of just smiling every now and then, but never lashing out on stage. His reservedness is tempered only by his superior bass abilities. It was good to see him just flow through the set with such grace. Dolores, well, she was just insatiable. She really rocked the house with her vocals and vibrant energy. I really mean that. Dolores was walking here and there and really getting into the show. When she had to stand still, she really focused on the vocals. Also, her form fitting black zigzag looking top and shiny black pants could have not proved any more better about how well she has been taking care of herself since the baby. Big props up to her. Some notable performances include Pretty, Wanted, Salvation, Daffodil Lament, Waltzing Back, Zombie and Dreams. Also, it was during the performing of Ridiculous Thoughts when she made her way to the front part of the stage and she stuck out her hand to the crowd, and yup, you guessed it, HottyMo touched her hand and got a smile in return. She has great eyes and a wonderful smile. I'll tell you this, though, I'm currently 23, but I'll be dammed if I did not feel thirteen when it happened. I felt all goosey inside, it was fun. :) As the show ended, I could not help but think that this concert was bar none one of the best I have ever seen in my life. The Cranberries rock like no other band I know and if there was any, or is any, doubt in anyone's mind about their vitality on stage, there shouldn't be. I have seen more than my fair share of shows, and this one, well, it takes the cake. After I left, I decided to wait behind the Joint feebly hoping that I could meet the band. I realized that this was probably the only chance that I would ever have of getting this close, and so I stood with ten other teenagers waiting in breathless anticipation. It did not look so good, when I saw a behemoth of a man walk out the back door escorting a small woman in a leather Hard Rock Cafe jacket to a limo. It was Don and Dolores. By the way, he is a *big* guy. It was cool looking at those two. Of course the kids flooded her first with comments about how good she looked and other surepticious comments like that(I am sure she is well aware of what she looks like, people. Say something original for her sake. ;-) ) and so I just sounded out my own comments when I asked her whether they had made a second video. ****Cranberries news #1: She looked at me with her cool brown eyes(sigh) and with a Gaelic accent and smile she said yes, a second video was made last week in Canada and should be released soon. After some more comments about how good she looked, I threw another question in the air to break the retarded vibe. I asked about the B-sides. I said that for the first single the B-sides have come from live performances of EEIDISWCW and when are we going to hear some new stuff. I mean really people, we are sick of hearing Linger and Dreams, aren't we? :) *****Cranberries news #2: She asked Don about the singles and he said that there were going to be new B-sides. Whoo-hoo! After some wag asked about when we were going to see the new baby, she said that there things best-left private. I gave her props right then for saying that and I think that is very cool of her to do that. I also asked her about what she thought of playing clubs from playing huge venues and she told me she is really enjoying the intimacy of this tour. She left after that and then to top off my evening, the boys came out. Mike: very smiley. I swear to god, that boy can smile. He was very cool in signing stuff and answered our questions with great aplomb. Noel: WOW. This guy was very shy. He is very cool and I commented him on his guitar playing and he was very generous to all the teeny boppers who could not help but hug him. Fergal: The coolest of the guys. He came out and was really bum rushed by the ladies who started to take pictures of him from all sorts of angels. He looked swamped from all the adulation(He really had on this funny expression when girls just started to hug him after signing stuff) I decided to ask him about the video and he was really cool in telling me that yes, it is finished. And when asked about the theme...he looked at me with a smile and said, "I can't tell you." OOOooo. That one hurt. :) So, I asked him what else they have been doing. ***Cranberries News #3: Fergal said they had just finished taping something for VH1. It is going to a ten song show and it will be airing sometime in the next few weeks. Very cool as I did not know that and I apologize if anyone else has reported it. I thanked him for his posts on the web and he said he is trying to get the rest of the band to write something. As he stepped aboard their deep magenta colored bus, I was filled with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment as I realized that my journey had come to an end, but not without a signed CD and a story I will never forget. Of course I have not put down everything, but I swear to you this is the truth when I say that before I left the area, the girls who were laughing at us from the V.I.P line came around the corner and asked where the band was. When I mentioned that they had come and left, they looked kind of disappointed.. I could not help but to feel that something was on my side on Saturday and that I felt this warm feeling in my heart that maybe being a V.I.P is not everything it is cracked up to be. I guess there is cosmic justice in the world. :) As I drove home, I felt great, but I had a greater feeling in me that the Cranberries are a band that I have loved and respected for about seven years now. Now this night has come and gone, I know that I will never be able to respect and love them more. They are really good people who took time out just to thank some of us Fan-atics. As I promised, here's a synopsis of my experience at the Chicago concert...(sorry it's been awhile, I've been busy finishing this college semester and moving and all...) WARNING: This story is very long and detailed but fun and exciting (at least I hope you think so!!) Only true Cranaddicts sould venture forward :D First of all, my friend and I drove from Michigan to Chicago to the concert via the Indiana Toll Road. While westbound, I spotted 2 huge tour buses with licence plates marked "Musicians." I SWORE it was the Cranberries so I made my friend make a poster that said "WE LOVE THE CRANBERRIES" and put it in the back window of the car. Then I pulled in front of them to see if we could get a confirmation from the driver if the Cranberries WERE in there. The drivers seemed oblivious, so we decided to just follow the buses into Chicago and confirm ourselves who was really in there. (Meanwhile you can imagine my anticipation!!) My friend had to use the restroom which made me "pissed" cause I thought we were going to lose the buses. But we sped ahead and used the McDonald's Oasis (right before Chicago). As he was getting back into the car the tour buses passed us and we quickly got back on the toll road and on their tail again. We followed them into downtown Chicago where some red lights seperated us. So I jumped out of the car and ran up to the buses (with 10 various album covers in hand for them to sign in case it was them!) which had stopped in front of an expensive hotel (Hotel Monaco near Wacker Street). There were police and security around and I tapped on the front door to get the driver's attention. He motioned me to come around to his side and I asked "Are the Cranberries in there?" He shook his head in a way that I found unconvincing. I then went up to one of the police officers and asked him who was in the buses. "Oh that's R. Kelly!" WHAT?!! I was so disappointed and mad at myself for following thoses buses for 2 hours! Most of all I was mad that I had lost my friend who was driving my car around downtown! While waiting at the corner I asked the policeman about the quickest way to get to the Riviera and met some guys who asked me who was in the buses. After a half hour, my friend showed up and we were on our way to the concert. We got a good (free!) parking spot around the corner and then went to the front door around 3:30. There were about 5 people in line then. I looked in the doors and saw a sign that said "For deliveries, please use the Lawrance Street entrance." I thought that maybe the stage door would be around there, so I went around the corner to do some investigating. Sure enough, there was a door marked "Stage Door" and I looked at it in awe. It was pretty inconspicous and no one was around so I walked in. I was met by 2 guys who said "Hey, what do you want?" and of course I said "I'm here to see Dolores." They said "Dolores who?" and I said "Dolores of the Cranberries!" and they told me she wasn't there yet and to wait outside. While I was in there "Promises" was playing and I asked if the band was doing a sound check. They said that the band wasn't there yet and their people were doing a pre-sound check beofre the band arrived. So I went outside and started waiting right outside that stage door. Every time it opened my heart started racing... Finally some security guys started coming out. They were dressed in plain clothes and we started talking. "So, you're waiting for Dolores?" they asked. I said yes, I was planning to meet her here before the show. (I didn't want to say "I'm a HUGE Fan and I WANT TO MEET DOLORES!!!" I tried to be calm because I knew I would get a much better response from everyone and my chances of meeting the band would increase.) The security guys were nice and we talked for a while and they showed me a safe place to stand and everything. Then it started to rain and the went inside the stage door and one guy went inside his car parked on the curb 5 feet from the stage door. I remained on the corner (about 10 feet from the stage door) not minding at ALL that it was raining, just enjoying myself and hoping I would get lucky tonight. The security guy in the car rolled down his window and said "Wanna come in?" and so I got oput of the rain and into the car. His name was Kim and he was really nice and told me that the band was going to come around 5:30. Finally after 45 min. in the car it stopped raining and then I saw with my eyes (which never left sight of the Stage Door!) I saw Mike Hogan come out of the alley and walk towards the Stage Door. I got of the car and said "Mike!" But he just waved and quickly entered the door. I was excited but sad that he didn't stop and I was sulking in the alley whenI looked up and there was Fergal walking towards me about 50 feet away. It was such a sureal feeling, like a dream. He keep coming towrads me and I walked towarfds him. "Fergal, let me introduce myself, I'm Dolly Housholder" I said and extended my hand to him. He said "Hi!" and shook my hand. I was surprised to see how short he was. He seemed to me like "mini-Fergal" about 5'7". He was wearing a white t-shirt with a black leather jacket and jeans. I told him that I was really looking forward to the concert and how I was glad they were finally back on tour again after 3 years off. He talked to me about how great it was to be playing and touring again and how excited he was, too. We talked a little more then he said bye and went inside. He was really nice, easy to talk to, and he looks JUST like the pictures in Bury the Hatchet. His handshake was a little on the weak side, though :) About five minutes later I spotted Noel walking down the street about 50 feet away. I said "Noel! Mr. Hogan!" But he didn't stop. The only one left was Dolores of course, so I continued to wait on that corner. It was about 5:45 or so and I continued waiting around for Dolores. I walked in the alley behind the stage and heard Noel and Fergal talking and the they started playing "You & Me" with no vocals. It was cool listening to them through this old rusty door that must have been close to Fergal's drums because it was vibrating with the bass drum. I tried to open the door but it was locked. I wandered around some more and the security guy told me that Dolores just called and Taylor has an ear infection so she won't be coming until the very start of the show. So I went back to the front an began to stand in line. I counted about 40 people in front of me. I took in a camera and took 27 pictures inside. If they're good, they'll be posted on the internet on the Cranberries Land page My opinion of Sponge was pretty bad. The lead singer looked and acted like a pervert in my opinion. Their music was recognizable, but I found myself impatient with them and shouting "CRANBERRIES!!!" in between their songs. Now I will tell you that the concert was really, really great, especially since it was such a small venue of 2300 people. I had copied Fergal's setlist from the homepage and kept track of the songs as they came. The place got kinda quiet when Dolores was changing guitars right before Zombie, so I yelled as loud as I could "ZOMBIE, ZOMBIE!!!" and everyone started cheering a bit and Dolores go this smile on her face. She went up to the microphone and said "You're right, this is Zombie." That was so cool! Then in the encore I shouted "DOLORES, DESPERATE ANDY....DESPERATE ANDY!!!" And I saw Dolores look at Fergal and laugh cause thet were gonna play "When You're Gone" next and not "Desperate Andy" I felt stupid but then they played Desperate Andy and Dolores said something like "Now here's Desperate Andy" or something like that I forget. After the show I went right up to the stage where they were giving out Fergal's drumsticks and towels and setlists. Someone threw Fergal's water bottle to me. I was sad cause these tall fat guys right in front of me were grabing everything that I could have had, they both got Fergal's sticks, I was close though. So security was telling everyone to leave but I notived that Noel's setlist was still taped to the ground. I asked someone if I coul have it and he ripped it off and gave it to me!! I was so happy, Noel had even writen some notes to himself on it, too!! Then I came out of the concert so energized and went back to the stage door in hopes to see Dolores come out. I saw Kim the security guy again and he showed me a place to stand by this barricade where Dolores would be coming out. There were about 10 other people waiting with me to see the band. I was surprised there weren't more than that. While waiting, I asked "Is anyone on the Ridiculous Thoughts mailing list" but people just looked at me funny so I said "Nevermind!" (Hey you guys from the list should have been there....!!) A new black Lincoln Towncar pulled up between the stage door and us and Dolores in all her glory stepped out and into the car. Then she slid over to the side we were on and rolled down her window. She was about 3 feet from me and I immediately handed her my setlist and said "Can you write to Dolly and Simon (my boyfriend)" And she said "Sure! To Dolly and Simon?" and I said "Yes please!" She smiled and signed it and then I asked her a bunch of questions while she was signing things for other people. I asked her when they're touring in Norway and she said they'll be in Norway in the Fall. I said "Great! I'm gonna be there for that show!" And she looked puzzeled and asked me why and I told her that my boyfriend lives in Norway and I met him on his Cranberries website 2 years ago. She looked up at me and said that was neat. I asked her if Taylor was ok with his ear infection and all, and she said that he was fine. She was going to take him to the doctor in the morning. I told Doores that the show was really really great and she told me that we were a great audience. I coul;dn't understand her because of her accent, so I said "What?" and she looked at me straight in the eye and said slowly "You were a great audience" while nodding her head. I said thanks and told her that the MidWest loves her and she said "Really?" very surprised. I said "Yes! We're already looking forward to you coming back in the summer!" She kept smiling and signing things. Don wasn't there, I think he was back with Taylor. Dolores had some scruffy rough guy with her who didn't look like Don, but was kinda acting as his stand-in by following her. I talked to her a little more, but I forget all I said. She ended up signing my setlist, my ticket, and my camera case. I took 9 close-up photos of her, too, which I know will turn out well. Dolores was very friendly, nice, and she looked gorgeousbetter than I can remember. She signed everything anyone wanted and then finally left. After she left, there were only about 5 or 7 of use who continued to wait for the guys to come out. A big white van pulled up in place of Dolores' car and about 40 min later Fergal, Mike, and Noel came out and went directly into the van. People were shouting for them and then Noel came out and walked up to me. I handed him my setlist (his setlist actually!) and he signed it. I said "Noel, that was a GREAT show!" and he said "Thanks a lot" and continued to sign various things. I asked him if I could get my picture with him and he said "Yeah, sure." So I went beside him and put my arm around his shoulder while soemone took my camera and snapped a picture of us. I don't think Noel even looked up, so the picture wasn't perfect. I half-hugged Noel who's about 5'9" or 5'8" and told him again that the show rocket. He said "Thanks a lot" again to me. fergal and Mike waited in the van for Noel. I was waving to them and giving them the thumb's up sign and they waved back. Finally after about 5 min., Noel got back inside the car and they drove off...... One of the best impressions I got from the band was to see how friendly and nice they all were. Mike was the only one I didn't talk to and he seemed unusually shy and almost annoyed with the whole celebrity thing. Soooo, that's my story!! If you've read this far, thank you for being interested this much in the Cranberries. I hope you enjoyed this testimony of sorts of mine. It was one of the best nights I've had. The only regret of mine is that my boyfriend, Simon, wasn't with me enjoying every moment and meeting Fergal before the show and all. But I have a feeling that sometime in the future we'll both see them again. I'll tell you when my pictures get on the internet. (My dad is picking them up right now, so I hope they're good!!!) I'll also scan my setlist and signed ticket!
